  • Emma - Audiobook by Jane Austen Read by Peggy Ashcroft. Abridged
Emma is a young lady whose world is the society within she lives. Of good social standing, Emma has decided to help her friend Harriet, of lesser standing, to find a good match though Emma herself has decided never to get married. So begins a comedy of etiquette, proper standing among social classes, elegant parties, and communication filled with hidden meaning among friends, family, and unwanted suitors.
    Enjoy!
Jane Austen (1775-1817) wrote six novels, four of which were published during her lifetime and two posthumously. Since they were published anonymously, she did not become famous during her lifetime. Rather, her fame and books sales grew in the decades after her death and are still widely read. All six novels have all been made into movies or TV presentations. One of the best is the 1996 production of Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow.* My favorite is 1940’s Pride and Prejudice starring Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier. Both movies are well worth watching.
Dame Peggy Ashcroft (1907-1991) was a British actress of stage and screen though most of her work was in the theatre. She was best known for her portrayals in Shakespeare plays. On screen, Ms. Ashcroft appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps (1935), The Nun’s Story (1959) along with Audrey Hepburn, and A Passage to India (1984) for which she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. One of her most interesting projects was voicing the main character in an animation about a retirement age couple trying to survive a nuclear attack titled When The Wind Blows. Her ashes were spread around a Mulberry tree.
*I made a mistake in a collage of Jane Austen movies that’s in the video. Ms. Paltrow didn’t win the Oscar for this film, rather it was for Shakespeare In Love. I kept the mistake in to see if anyone notices.

Beautiful reading - just a shame it's abridged. Still a little of Peggy Ashcroft is better than nothing. Thank you.
