What is a String Test?

Sometimes we use a "string test" to estimate how tall a foal will end up, so I thought I would try it with all of my horses and see how accurate it is!
I find it's usually accurate within an inch or two.
The knee to coronet measurement is accurate after about 3 months old, because almost all of the leg blow the knee is done growing at that point. The elbow to fetlock and rotate is accurate some time between 1 year and 18 months, because that's when the whole leg is done! The rest of a horse's growth comes from the elbow up, until the withers finish growing around 6 or 7 years.
