Winter range loss, 12V batteries losing power, Charging stations ruining trucks... is the ford f150 lightning actually a disaster?
It has been a long road of ups and downs surrounding the ford f-150 lightning.
Today I want to look at all the new surrounding ford's electric truck and decide if this truck might be a huge failure.
Mostly we will look into how ford handled the news of their winter performance and other key issues around the truck.
Plus there has been news of trucks being bricked.

I get range loss in my gas F 150 too when you start it & let it run for 15 min to warm up 2-4x a day except most people only look at the E-F gauge & don’t do the mpg math. It’s really only bc now people are being told the miles that anxiety is setting in whereas if I filled my 20 gallons at 17mpg I’ll have 340 but after idling to warm up I might only have 280-300 OMG WINTER RANGE LOSS 🥶 I’m sure ford will have warmers soon
Elon is probably chuckling at ford, that’s why I cringe when I see ford taking shots at him

Dude, sorry to bust your bubble, but my warm rump and hands and smooooth ride says I love my truck here in coooold Wisconsin. So you gotta charge more. Who cares? I used to hate going to smelly gas stations. In my Lightning, I get to charge at work or home. Or on the road, take a relaxing charger break. This truck is awesome- quiet, smooth, and crazy fast when you need it. And great to haul stuff in.

I cancelled my Lightning order. After they raised the price in order to suck the government incentive money out of consumer pockets into Ford’s, I decided I could get a BMW X5 plug-in hybrid for the same money as a XLT Lightning. My average daily mileage is under 40 miles and I’ve used 2 gallons of gas in the 7 weeks I’ve owned the BMW. No range anxiety, no dealing with sketchy EV infrastructure, no towing range problems (BMW tows 7,200 lbs). Better fit for me.

Thanks for another great video Larry, I'm Mike from California, but not the one that won the Charger, bummer. I was a lucky one to get a 22 XLT SR and so far I love it. Its basically a commuter for work and a family vehicle. My work is a 66 mile round trip and has free charging, kinda the perfect use case. I only have to charge once a week on my own dime if we are just commuting and normal errand runs. I got it in August and already have 10k miles on it.
Where I live in the Central Coast of California winter milage doesn't affect me as much and we know this isn't our travel car. My wife specifically drives a Yukon XL to tote around our family of 5 on any range that the Lightining won't make.

I can only speak to how I use my truck. I commute 80 miles a day plus another 20 or so if we go to dinner/ grocery store. My range was dipping to 160 miles at 90% charge which gave me plenty of cushion. On the weekends is when I pull my boat or trailer, usually within 30 miles or so and range has never been an issue, and that’s during colder months. If you live in the rural North and tow trailers, you won’t be happy. Everybody else, best value going in trucks

I’ve said this comment on other channels and it’s so true. Ford rushed the lightning to market to the be first out of GM / dodge and themselves. Now they are paying the price. Well actually the LOYAL consumers who have been with ford forever are paying the price. And you’re correct. The value on these ones will plummet when the newer redesign comes out. Because Ford will have to make this right. No heat pump? Like come on. They tried their own solution to it and it failed miserable. It’s a real shame. The main bones of the truck are great. Awesome power, frunk is massive and super useful. Pro power on board. But to pay $90,000+ to get such low range AND power in the winter is not right. No one is talking about this point!!! When the batteries are cold you loose tons of horse power!!! A friend of mine had his battery sitting at “79% or useable power”. I’m pretty sure the max horsepower is 580 so losing 21% is 122 horsepower you’re losing. So now you’re down to 460 horsepower of useable power. That’s just not right. Gm / Chevy and dodge played this smart. They took there time. They are both building a Ev truck from the ground up. Ford made a 80% new Ev. But your seeing the results, and unfortunately it’s bad. People who have one are going to defend there purchase most of the time. It’s just reality. But the facts are the facts. It’s a bad vehicle for colder climates. Period

I have a Standard Range, there are a lot of people who are going to the extreme to make it look like their range is tanking.
In freezing weather I lose about the same as my Mach E, just charge overnight and pre condition and you are fine. The truck isn’t perfect but it’s a great truck, excited to see where it will be in 5-10 years.
Be realistic on your daily mileage and make an educated choice. Most people do not need 220 miles a day but some do, if that is you, then an it’s not time for you to get an EV. If you tow longer distances then it’s also not for you, but if you are towing 10k pounds more than 100 miles often then you need a bigger truck anyway.

Got my truck around September 1st and with my daily driving while the weather was warm I was getting around 2.1 to 2.2 mi/kw. Since November 15th or so when temps dropped, I've been hovering between 1.8 and 1.9. That's like 215 miles of range down to 175. So a slight drop of 18%, totally within expectations. Also, there's snow and mud on my roads, so that's got to be considered as well.

I am going to say this as a side note. Approx. 75% of the people in the US that but full sized trucks, use and work them as trucks. The rest of the people are mall crawling or buy midsized trucks as a lifestyle vehicle. The F150 has been such a strong seller for so long due to it's adaptability and usability. The 1/2 ton Chevy Silverado is neck and neck with it.
If you go out on any jobsite there will be full sized trucks of at least a 1/2 ton rating.
Trucks being used for grounds keeping, service, parts and material delivery, towing, you name it.
None of these businesses are going to be happy with a truck with an average 100 mile range or less in the winter let alone try and tow even light loads any distance.
I am in the service industry and all of our trucks are 3/4 or 1 ton heavy duty trucks and up.
Our delivery and runner trucks are midsized and 1/2 ton trucks for fuel economy.
We don't make money when the trucks are standing still or refueling or recharging.
That is why the majority of EV truck sales are not by people who use them for what trucks are built to do.
Also a 4 or 5 foot box is useless to us.

My truck went into production the week of November 7th, but it got tossed off to the side on a ramp graveyard waiting on a chip. I had this on order since MY22, so since I was going to lose out on the EV tax credit due to all the unexplained delays, I asked for a refund of my deposits and told them they can have that already ageing truck once it decides to arrive. I feel so much relieved now and can sleep better at night knowing I averted a huge financial mistake. The competition is just a short year away from making the Lightning a huge flop in the EV world.

Mine is a 2022 Lariat with ER battery and I am still enamored with it! It’s my first foray into the EV ecosystem and I’m hooked! Now not only do I not use it for work, I actually work from home so it’s mostly for pleasure and errands and stuff. I am moving from NJ to FL soon, so I’m looking forward to taking a long trip with it. I originally got it to use for the home back up power feature but that install is on hold until I get to FL. Most of the time I’m using level 1 charging here at home and that’s working for me. When I do get really low after a big trip or a lot of usage, I hit up a local EA for some DCFC to get me up to 80% and then I will plug in to 110 at home. I know mine isn’t a normal use case but it’s my reality. Now if they would make an EV EcoSport for my other half! Ford4Life!

Kinda sounds like me. But I charge with fords mobile charger on 240 volt. Since you have an extended range battery you should also be receiving the 80 amp 240 volt pro charger from Sunrun. Which can be adjusted to charge anywhere from 20 amps to 80 amps which is really cool . These are made for short commutes & home charging. When you go on your trip be prepared to wait on charging, paying high kwh prices and possible range anxiety. But if you aren't in a hurry to get to where you're going you should be fine.

  • @ThorASic
    @ThorASic Год назад +8

I’m struggling with the same dilemma. Ford has forced us to choose between the tax credit and the extended range battery.
My EV has about a 25% range loss in the cold weather. Which means I’m only getting around 200 miles. It’s not enough. And that’s not much less than the standard range F-150 in the summer. In the winter the truck would get about 150-160 miles with the same 25% loss. That would really be difficult to deal with. You could only make 60-70 mile round trips.
So I’ve been wondering if I purchase a standard range F-150 Lariat is there still enough demand to flip it for the original MSRP + sales tax?
Maybe you could do a video on what the demand looks like now that prices have gone up and the economy is tanking.
    Thanks!

Gas prices are currently way low in my area under $3. I don't expect that to last, in fact gas prices could soar as high as $10/gal. Everyone that asks me if it's cheaper to drive then gas. So many variables involve to answer that question. Driving habits, do you charge at home, what speed roads do you drive, city, highway, or interstate, are you able to keep your foot out of the accelerator. I tell them as long as you use it locally (55mph roads & city) , you charge at home you can get great mileage range at lower costs than ICE vehicles. But if you have long commutes or do a lot of traveling or long distance towing and public charging, these EV'S aren't for you. Expect tower and cold weather range drops. I love my lightning, I expect the absolute most I'll be paying to drive a mile will be about
7.5 cents. $7.50 to drive 100 miles is great. So say gas prices dropped all the way down to$2.50/gal that would still be 33 mpge for nearly a 7000 lb vehicle.

I agree, it’s definitely poor optics for Ford with pushing everyone to the higher trims and then raising the prices 8k. My order is in transit and I most likely won’t take order of it because it’s now much more expensive than the Rivian order I have that should arrive in the next few months, so I’ll probably wait for that if finances allow. It really meant a lot when Rivian grandfathered existing order holders into the old price. I’ve had my order with Ford longer and they didn’t afford me the same treatment.

I was fortunate to get a lightning platinum mannequin at MSRP. I had to wait 6 months to take possession of it. I believe people that ordered these EV'S did do much research on them. If I leave my lightning plugged in all night it must keep the battery warm & only charge to 80%. I haven't seen any significant range drop yet at 23 degrees. I realize that's not near as the below zero temperatures that I see frequently in my area. Anyone that understands what cold does to lithium batteries. My daily drives are about 60 miles, I knew I'd never take my lightning on a trip because I've never planned on ever paying $.31-$.43 per kwh, just ridiculous. I think people are finally realizing these vehicles aren't suited for long distance traveling. To be honest because of the reason I bought my lightning I wouldn't care if my range went all the way down to 1 mile per kwh, I'd still have more range than I'll ever need and at 1/mpk in winter I'd still be getting 100 miles for about $7.50. That's hard to beat for anyone driving nearly a 7000 lb vehicle.

TFLEV recently put up a video on cold weather range loss in response to Hoovies video on his cold weather experience with the Lightning. They also bust a couple myths.
I was a day one reservation holder for the Lightning but Ford's pricing shenanigans got me to cancel. Meanwhile, I had ordered a Rivian R1T in Oct' 2021 and took delivery of it last August. They did have the pricing debacle but they kept the original pricing. So far, I've been very happy with the truck, despite the broken tonneau cover.
Anyways, the cold has impacted my R1T's range but by maybe 20%. I haven't exactly driven my truck conservatively so I'm not sure how much I could improve that. But the truck is working well for me.

Yes. Leave it plugged in. At temps of 25F or higher I can see no more than 10% loss. Colder could be worse. I have a Tesla M3 also and get the same types of losses. The heater is resistive in both cases and can cause at most a 20% loss, but with heated seats the set point. So results in the Midwest or the mountains may be different, but this works. Towing percentage degradation is the same as a gas vehicle. Range is unexceptably low. If you want to worry about something, worry about the lacking of working chargers during road trips.

I live in Minnesota, 4 degrees fahrenheit now, I'm paying attention to other people's experiences in the cold especially because the ancient heater technology in the trucks. Mine will be plugged in every night and my commute is about 100 miles per day with half after it's sat in a warm garage and the return trip after it has sat outside, unplugged in a very cold parking lot.. I'm still really looking forward to getting the truck but winter range is a concern. Especially since I do like using a heater. Plus with a family of 5, I can't expect the 3 in the back seat to freeze without seat warmers! If I can only manage 120 miles when temps are negative, it's a concern but probably not a deal breaker. C'mon Ford surprise me and start putting in heat pumps and let me upgrade my pro to an ev battery! (Watch cold Tesla guy video)

The Range loss won't be an issue for me - I have like a 13 mile commute to work and can charge here for $1/day if needed.. this will still save me HUNDREDS $$ each month vs my ICE F150. I don't plan on towing nearly enough to make me not buy this truck. I drive a truck because I love the size (and my back sucks and it's hard to get in and out of smaller cars) so I am definitely NOT a "truck" guy.. Larry, no one 'has' to buy a Lightning. Or ANY vehicle, for that matter. It's not life or death.
No one 'has' to have a truck, Tesla makes many sedans you can easily buy if you 'have' to have an EV.
No one 'has' to buy ANY new vehicle. Period. There are MILLIONS on MILLIONS of used vehicles to take a gander at.
We generally have nothing to do but 'complain' about all these important issues in life, well, what we 'think' is important at this moment in time. In 5 years, we'll all have forgotten about all these 'negatives' that seem to be 'so' important now. They are not.

I let go of my Lariat, I put it on sale, before arrival, no one was interested so when it arrived I let it go to the dealer, the price is too high, the economy is in dire. I agree for the people that have it to haul a tree once a year and maybe something large 2-6 times a year the reduction in range won't really matter as long as you don't mind charging every single night. To me seems like an inconveince to me. As when I was like yet I want thins I though ok this could save money on fuel and likely only have to charge weekly like I fill up. that seems to just not be the case. and for pretty much the same price as any other truck I'm not seeing the advantage anymore. Maybe in a few more years or Dodge will figure it out or at least be hey if you tow a max load this is your range or in the winter this will be the range. I'm on the fence about electric trucks. While the range is disappointing, I won't have to worry about going in every three months for an oil change and having the dealership try to upsell a bunch of unnecessary maintenance. I could probably drive an electric truck for what I pay in maintenance for a year on a gas model. My main concern right now is the lack of an EV truck that would replace a 3/4 or 1-ton truck. Given the battery performance available now, it looks like that will be several years down the road. I wish Tesla was building a conventional pickup. With their battery expertise, I bet they could build a heavy-duty pickup. But you are never going to see a Cybertruck pulling a gooseneck trailer or a fifth wheel camper. They are not designed for those types of conventional truck tasks.

Winter range loss of Lightning is typical for EV without a heat pump. Your pop-up text confirmed it. Down 40% about what Hoovie and others are seeing.
Resistive heaters use a ton of power like around 7KW or so (as compared to home space heater that uses 1.5KW). HVAC blower motors are also not great. Anyway, 7KW every hour zaps 7KWH off your battery. For 4 hours of driving that's 28KWHs just for the heater, which is over 25% right there. Then add that on to the cold batteries loss.
On our little FIAT 500e I typically see 25% reduction at around freezing with resistive heater in use. Worst I've seen was during polar vortex and it was -22F, which dropped range by 70% (in part because heater was blasting full blast).
