for a time there were these 2 piece spade bits with High Speed Steel paddles (drill bit steel) and they are long lasting but were too expensive and have gone the way of the dodo bird.

So are the flat kind (i.e. the shank doesn't extend past the bottom of the spade) not made with high speed steel?
