"pedestal sinks are not plumbers best friend" made the customer smile :) me too , love Richard.
Hahahahahah your soooooo fakeeee
this was awesome, attempting to replace the sink this weekend, thank you so much for this-as well as the step by step process!
How did it go?
Just what I was looking for. Our 25+ pedestal sink lost a battle with the 50 yr old mirror. Got another sink and want to DIY it again. Thx TOH.
Just replaced my sink top as well as I had put a heavy glass near the sink and the first time it fell into the sink it cracked it. Patching it does look horrible. Thanks for this video, I did it way easier the second time after watching this. I also changed out my two shut offs as I prefer the ball valves and everything looks shiny and new. I built my own escutcheon out of wood to match the bathroom accessories.
Well you know to not put glass near it in the future
As a plumber, pedestal sinks are in my top 3 least favorite installs to do, and believe me, I charge extra $$ for them.
It's a 3x charge just cause it's a pain.
Thank-you! I needed to take the exact same pedestal sink out! Watching your video made it a charm!
I watched this video then went to remove the pedestal sink in my bathroom. It wasn't even close to this experience. I couldn't reach most of the nuts/screws/pipes, and finally ended up beating it to death with a pipe wrench. That is when I found the bowl was stuck to the pedestal with huge amounts of caulk, stuck to the wall the same way, and had additional brackets securing it to the wall. I'm now down to the very bottom of the base and it's still somehow stuck to the subfloor. Going after that with my air hammer next.
yikes!
Thank you for this video. I need this. My sink cracked. I’m going for a vanity this time because I need a tiny bit of storage in the powder room.
Thank you for your video. It was extremely helpful and much appreciated !
Thanks so much! You all helped me tremendously!
Yes, tight working quarters, very tight. It will be a test of your patience especially after getting it all together then find out there's a leak at the tailpiece; I can vouch for that! 🙄
*works as expected.*
Awesome video! Our sink cracked and we'll be replacing it soon. This will be very helpful!
Hi... beginner DIYer here. What is the dough like compound you wrap around the faucet neck/pipe before inserting them into the pedestal? Is it some kind of caulking? Is this recommended for all faucet installation? Thanks!
Plumbers Putty...it’s a caulking and sealing compound that you can find at most big box home improvement stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot. Without it, any water that pools around the base of the faucet will drip underneath the cabinet.
I want to replace one of these but the tubing coming out of the wall is solid metal and the conections are all rusted. any tips? XD
i actually was hoping to see how or which tool did you use to tighten the nuts that attach the faucet to the sink..
i just did a similar sink today but with a single hole faucet and man it was a pain to get to those nuts!! since everything was crammed in one hole the hoses where kind of in the way for me to use EVEN a very thin socket, never mind my basin wrench.
Lol i ended up using needle nose pliers for that! haha...
I just did the same thing. The new faucet came with a double ended long hollow socket wrench (plastic) almost a foot long. It allows one to go straight up and right over the long bolt and screw the nut under the sink. I'm keepin' that tool !!
Came to get some reputable advice about the tuff lag bolt.
I've done this twice now. Why does it take me SO LONG!? It always seems so easy until you're doing it.
BTW that water trap STINKS like a mofo, be warned.
I tend to overthink things and thats why it take forever but it usually comes out good..
If a plumbing job will take a long time, like overnight, make sure you plug that drain pipe so that sewer gas doesn't enter your house.
Yeah, my water trap gave up the ghost after a few years (Chinese plastic) so I just got a nice metal drain basket and it works just fine
Hey man, I would like to see you make a video installing a kitchen and bathroom fixture giving all the details on the fittings like the name and stuff.....
The chrome looks nice, probably better than pvc. But I feel like pvc wears better. No rust or corrosion
SuperTwilightZoned chrome doesnt rust
Chrome is what makes stainless steel, stainless!
@@bigjon7894 OK OK smart guy. "Chromed" steel certainly rusts ... yeah yeah, I know it's technically the steel that is doing the rusting but the final result is that the nice shiny thing eventually turns into a horrible pockmarked rusty thing.
What about the cocking around the wall
Why use a chrome trap then use braided supply lines??
Great video I'm just wondering would you tackle this by yourself I have a pedestal sink on the first floor of my house I'm just a wondering if I should tackle this by myself or should I have helped the Trap rotted out I need to replace it thanks
Do you not screw the base into the floor? Considering installing a pedestal in one of my bathrooms. My plumber friend said it's a pain to do. I'm redoing the floors in all my bathrooms, and there is poured cement under the current linoleum.
Goooooon84 some pedestals have holes which you could anchor them down but honestly overall they’re a pain to work with and require a lot of maintenance cleaning wise
Pedestal sinks were invented to punish us plumbers.
Cool story pal
when are you supposed to wrap the white teflon tape around valve spout? I notice sometimes it is used, and sometimes it isn't
Just use a wall hung sink, looks better and easier to use, if you don’t want to see any pipes you can get one with a shroud to hide everything
Can the Drain height in the pedestal be adjusted to the wall connection?
donklaing you can install an extension above the ptrap if your drain is to low out of the wall
Great!
Full city water pressure alert @1:11
Wow. It's very helpful,
Did anyone see this old house magazine in the magazine holder by the toilet lol 😂
Full city water pressure !
Adjustable “Crescent” wrenches are a huge mistake. Take the time to use the correct size, open end wrench.
Shouldn't an adhesive/caulk/glue/putty be added where the sink sits on/ attaches to the pedestal?
Corner Horn Preferably yes, but it's not essential.
My installation included some double sticky foam rectangles that the sink just sits on so it doesn't grind.
He's like, "Now I need to install these lag bolts. I'll be back."... The whole reason I was watching this video. My sink manufacturer's instructions are terrible 😔
It was so tight they couldn't get a camera in there so they left that out.
Use clear silicone not putty. Putty dries over time and will crumble and absorb water.
Great idea until you come to have to do work on it some years down the line. Old silicone is the bane of my life.
@@MrAdopado just takes flex putty knife and some pressure

I got a new used pedestal sink for a very good price, $35.00 with faucet. It’s a little bigger than the old one that had cracks. I don’t have nuts to mount to wall and for now had it leaned a bit with only stand holding up. Few years now! Tired of it moving and drain coming out! Any one have ideas how and what I can use to mount to wall? Thanks
This will only work if size, holes, etc are all same. Most have sheetrock on studs and holes for sink do not line up with studs, so what does one do. Same with pedestal, many want you to drill hole at bottom to screwito floor. Well floor already has flooring, hardwood, tile, concrete foundation, which one does not want toput hole into. Builder, Del Webb, did not secure Pedestal, no wood block to put lag into, they usd the old molly screw into a spring loaded unit that spreads once you put through larger hole. Builder on plumbing to reach wall pipe just put larger up from pee trap and slid tailpipe into larger pipe unsecured wit a nut. Anyone know if mollys are ok to use and what size. Maybe use adhesive caulk on pedestal to keep in place when it dries? Avoid drilling holes in tile and tearing walls apart to cut into studs to place 2x6” board for lags holding sink
I have the same sink but for some reason I am having a hard time inserting the lift rod. Is there any special technique?
Billy honestly best thing to do is bend it slightly (without breaking it) to let it slide down smoother
Full city water pressure
Thank you so much

Not a lot of water pressure
jshd jsjsjs Its a bathroom sink not a bath tub
I think something more vintage would be nicer. A wall hanging sink or one on chrome legs. The old faucet was nicer, in my opinion, but it is a cute older house.
Pedistal sinks are more trouble than their worth, something breaks it’s hard to get back there and see, vanity sinks are better.
forgot to mention the most important thing locate your water main valve and make sure it turns off.
Heard of common sense?
@@786qad I think marty's comment is a valid. Some first-time homeowners or new DIYers may forget or even not think about also turning off the main. Not everyone is a seasoned homeowner. Your comment is appreciated, marty!
Yes, definitely know where it is and that it can be turned off with ease. Richard pointed out the angle stops can bust, which is greatly minimized if you brace it when wrenching off the supply hoses but if it's an old house or has a bad solder joint to begin with, they can and do break.
Looks nice.
He can always wash his hands in the toilet after dumping in it
like how you skipped the lag bolts bc you probably forgot to lay them out before making the drain connection lol.
people here in italy cut your price in half if you want them to help you
I'm gonna get you to clean that up, alright.
مهنة بسيطة وما احلاها
Hahaha. I know, right.
thumbs up!!
@5:23-26 I thought he was going to hit Richard in the Head. 🙈
Those type sinks suck ! No storage or counter space !
Some bathrooms like my small one has to have one unless I wanted to move the heat/air duct!
Yes, anyone 7am Schwab
Next time show the drain pipe loosening of nut on video
You failed to show how to install the bolts into the wall to support the sink. It is the hardest part of your show. Not good.
Message to every pedestal sink: 😠
The video completely ignores or blows past what's required for the so called "lag connections". We have 2 bolts coming out of the wall at a distance of 19". We assume that a replacement sink will not have holes that are spaced exactly the same and that we'll need to drill and have new bolts go in versus what the plumber did originally (to make the bolts stick out of the wall).
I'm agog that the video simply ignores any complexity around this. This is in no way a useful video.
Richard left that old ratty escutcheon and just put the new one on top of it?
Maxid1 Just got done watching the video and I was going to ask about that.
If he would have took the old escushion off he wouldn't be able to slide the one all the way against the wall because it would be hitting the nut which would leave a gap between the wall and new escushion
FIRST STEP - please look up this: How to Find Your Water Shut-Off Valve & Use It
"Just grab me that faucet box, would you"? The appropriate response: "get it yourself".
So your screwing on to the sheetrock
That’s my question I just asked? Hopefully someone will help
Oh no ! A crack in the sink LMAO
I love the appearance of pedestal sinks, but I hate cleaning and repairing it. Ughhh..... I could detect the tone in Richards question when he asked, 'You have a choice to stick with a pedestal sink or switch to a vanity......' I bet every plumber in the world was whispering.... Pick the Vanity!!!!
"You know, people love pedestals..." Who? No one that I know. Everyone hates pedestals! They're shoddy merchandise put in by people who know they won't be around when they need to be repaired.
I'm sorry we make videos but we don't respond to our viewers
Wash hand basin.
Sinks in the kitchen 😬
Absolutely no counter space with a pedestal sink. Why do people like them? Makes no sense.
this is unreal! first the PVC P-trap will outlast that metal 10x. second, the lag bolts have to be marked (dry fit) and a pilot whole drilled before the drain is attached! ( the sink should be leveled side to side at this point) you will NOT get them in if you don't! adhesive caulk should also be used to secure the sink to the base and wall. (they almost never fit right) it should be called "this old moron"
He never bolted the sink to wall, he used metal trap, all wrong. Come on man, in today's world you better than to use metal traps , I have to constantly replace them because of contractors or handymen or plumbers that are inexperienced using the metal traps.
He needs to be wearing gloves
Removing sink and home owner still doesn’t realize that the hand soap needs to be taken off the sink. Typical homeowner.
FCWP!
Richard rolls his own putty when it's a dude helping. But when the ladies are there, oh yeah .... they get to roll the putty!! :)
I thought it looked like crap, the workmanship and they did not mention how to do the lag nuts, and they painted the wall but said nothing about it. this old house is just BS in my view
Your right BS video set sink on pedestal mark sink holes with pencil remove drill holes screw in studded fasteners with nuts leave loose so you can slip in pedestal then tighten sink take accurate measurement of drain comming out of wall and match from bottom of sink
Practically useless. None of the caulk or bolt work i was trying to see.
Lol so American so American sounds like Donald trump " alright we are going replace the pipe line with a great great WALL!"
Scampi FlatFish; what does a ped sink have to do with trump or a wall, keep politics out of this
Scampi FlatFish And toss our Imam Obama on the other side of it.
Guy is obviously a Russian troll.
What that foo needs is a hydrojett
Never seen a minority on TOH. Not once. Makes you wonder.
no good
Yes good
Half a job.
TD yeah I would think that the most difficult part would be bracing it to the wall
Pedestal sinks are not a plumbers friend because people dont know how to properly install them. Even this so called plumber didnt install it right. What a joke
