Not your fault as you didn't know but BAND-MAID's song "Hate?" definitely deserves a reaction do-over with their 2023 Yokohama Official Live performance. Trust us Maidiacs, it blows this Lollapalooza performance out of the water!

It’s better edited, for sure, to focus on the right members most of the time, but this performance here is iconic for other reasons and I think it’s just as good performance-wise. And definitely more raw, which is also good. I’d take a better edited video of this every single time over the official one (not that the official isn’t amazing).

Huh? This version was actually cleaner and tighter than the official live video.

LOVE that band! They played those songs back to back so there was no break between, plus they are awesome live.

Interesting thing about Band-Maid being at Lollapalooza was that they were actually invited by the festival itself. This is very rare, as almost all artists actually submit applications to play there. Also, this was this first time a Japanese band had played at the festival since 2013.

This Lollapalooza festival was in Chicago. The filming crew were unfamiliar with Band Maid, and didn't know where to focus on and when, as you can tell.
Miku (rhythm guitar) writes most of the lyrics, but the lyrics for "Hate?" were written by lead singer Saiki. Her best friends husband cheated during lockdown, and Saiki let him know what she thought.
Check out the official live for "Hate?", it was filmed in Japan last fall during their 10th anniversary concert. Filmed by people that know them, so better camera shots. And that video has English subtitles for the lyrics.

I think the reason we love Hate so much is because the Maids have so much fun playing it. They get to go wild. Especially Saiki, since she wrote the lyrics. And Dice is just quintessential, hard rock Band-Maid at its finest. Thx, Kathy, Lulu & Donna!

Kathy, Lulu, and Donna, this was a great live of Band-Maid. It took place at the Lollapalooza Music festival in Chicago in August of 2023. The performed early in the afternoon on that day. The terperature on the stage was over 100 degrees, yet the Maids were the consummate professionals and gave their all during their one hour set.
There is another video of "Hate?" and the bass/guitar duel from their 10th Anniversry Tour finale (yes, a decade together) from Yokohama Arena in November 2023. The official live video on their RUclips channel is worth reviewing on its own. Kathy and Donna make sure you pull up the closed captioning lyrics from the video. They're brutal and funny. Saiki was venting about men in Japan who cheated on their spouses during the Covid pandemic. Her lyrics show an absolute disdain for anyone who did that.

This was an incredible weekend for the Maids. The night before this performance, they played an 18-song setlist that started at 11:00pm and finished @1:00am (at a club in Chicago) then 12 hours later they played a 13-song set in @ 90 degree heat (this show, also in Chicago), they took Saturday off to travel to Minneapolis where I saw them live with my daughter Sunday at a sold-out show. They played 19-song set with no signs of any let down, it was a fantastic show. 5 little dynamos! 🤘

Lollapalooza has been around since 1991. It used to be a traveling festival but now resides permanently in Chicago. There is a 3-part documentary available in Paramount+ that just premiered this past May 2024.

    About the outfits;
They have all been together going on 11 years. In the early years they all wore the same design. They were a newbie band required to follow the instructions of their agency. As Donna noted, their clothes have changed over the years. Always becoming more to individual taste of the member.
I will always prefer Kanami's mid-career outfit with a sweeping fall of white on her back. My Angel of Rock!

Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame
There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. -N.C.

  • @evilvolts

the MV for Hate? is even better it's an indoor setting and the camera actually focuses on Misa during her solo rather than Saika and Akane and Misa and Kanami go way out on the walkway to the crowd during their duel

Their costumes wear out after a year or two and they redesign them when they are replaced. Saiki and MISA were not fond of the cute maid style so their design has drifted to something more fitting their personality. They are still considered to be a sort of maid.

Great reaction guys but the video didn't do justice to them, it kept showing the wrong person when playing. Lollapalooza is one of the largest festivals in the US over the last 33 years and Band-Maid was the first Japanese band to play in about 13 years (X-Japan was the last Japanese band). When they hit the stage around 1pm the temperature was close to 100F and they played also an hour. The girls later said this was the hottest show they've ever played, there some fan cams showing them leaving the stage dripping wet.

"I hate you, I hate you, I don't give a shet about you!"
    Saiki doesn't like cheaters!😂
Unfortunately the camera director screwed up with the solos.
TBF tho, not very many bands have rippin' bass solos!😂
    "Hate?" official live, next!
Better camera work, better audio, and subtitles! 👊🤘

I never liked these Lollapalooza recordings. The sound is poor compared to their other live performances. Also, they don't focus on the soloist or dominant instrument while filming. For example, they show the rhythm guitarist while the lead guitarist is doing a fancy riff, then they cut to the lead singer while the bassist is doing a riff. Just saying....if you want it done right, give it to the Japanese. Since the early 1980s, I have watched Japanese TV, concerts, etc., and the quality was always on par or better than what we had in America or Europe. I recommend you seek out live performances from Japanese venues.
