    One would think this is a straightforward job. But nooOooo… here I am over at my sister’s place. That’s the first clue to problems ahead. No idea it’s a Moen Montecello so I’m down under sink turning off water then disconnecting water supply lines. Get them off only to look up at underside of faucet assembly to see metal plate connecting everything so it won’t easily pull up & out. Lovely. Crawl out from under sink & grab hold of hot side with channel locks. It breaks free so I twist & twist but it won’t lift off. Now mind you her handles are broken off for past 10 years. I’m looking down at innards & there’s all this what I thought is hard water buildup so I am now chipping away at that stuff like a dentist clearing plaque off your teeth. It still will not come off. Alright I move over to the cold side to try getting that one off. Using my vice grip channel locks I grab hold of chrome fixture and could not get thing to budge. An hour & a half later I am still where I was 10 minutes into the job. Left her house pissed off as usual because every project she asks me to do turns into a fiasco somehow. Going to try again tomorrow with my damn sawzall to cut thru the crap.

    So I have completed all the stems until the getting the base off with the allen wrench. Used a 5.5mm allen wrench and it won't move anything in hole on top. is there something underneath that has to be loosened for it to turn? The two handles came off no problem, but I also noticed that someone used caulk on the underside to hold the brass plate in place and have removed all the caulk. I am at a loss on how to be able to get the base off. Any suggestions? Happy to send video or photos of issue.

    • @TheTruckGuy
      @TheTruckGuy  2 года назад

      Can you chisel away the caulk? If not, maybe you need to go at it with an angle grinder. That really sucks cause caulk or anything like that isn't necessary for moen faucets. They fit on extremely tight without anything added.

  • @TheRealDeadhorse
    @TheRealDeadhorse 4 месяца назад

    The key part to removing the Monticello faucet handles from before 1999 here is removing the retaining ring/clip under the handle hub and over the decorative ring under the hub. You can only get at this clip by removing the faucet head and loosening everything up. That will give you enough play to get at it. I wrestled with mine for a ridiculous amount of time because the installer before me glued the hub and decorative ring threads together. There’s wasn’t enough clearance on the ring to get vice gripes on it unless you loosen the entire assembly, but once you get some play in that area you should be able to break it loose. Good luck! If you run into this problem, I hope this helps.
    BTW you’ll see this here at about the 7:22 mark. I just got it loose enough to grab the clip with some duckbills and pulled it off. No big deal.

NOTHING gets loose. I can turn the base 100 times in either direction while holding the top of the handle stationary, and nothing gets loose. But after doing so, when I turn the water on again, it comes out black for a few seconds. What am I doing wrong? I need to fix the hot water from dripping. Thanks.

    • @WiiGame2000
      @WiiGame2000 Год назад

      @KarlaJorge My experience with 2 of these from probably 1996 original installs says: you won't be able to save the handles ... sorry. I'm gonna guess you probably have a drip and just want to change the cartridges? Oh, boy.
      In any case, while this video directed me to a 7/32" Allen wrench (after I converted from 5.5mm) and the parts hidden inside the handles, I had to break one handle with a pipe wrench and Dremel-cut the other one in half before I could get to the C-ring.
      I came to a video thumbnail with the word STUCK and a big arrow pointing at a handle hoping to find out how to unstick that always stubborn part. Unfortunately, no such luck. And after examining the fruits of my hard labors here just now, I don't see how anything could unstick these parts.

  • @rgraz4929
    @rgraz4929 Год назад

    Now I know why my faucet handle bases keep turning a million counter clockwise revolutions but nothing is getting loose. Because the older style Monticello faucets (that look EXACTLY like the ones in your video) have C clips and the entire assembly must be either removed or loosed to get to the C-clips. With my luck, there's many videos showing how to simply unscrew the base to replace the cartridge, but none on the older style with the c-clips.

  • @mlindholm
    @mlindholm Год назад +1

    6:29 for me was key...with no obvious set-screws on the handles, or even a brand ANYWHERE on the thing, there was no obvious indicator how to remove the handles, valves, etc, or even where to start searching for instructions. After loosening the nut underneath one valve (the other was corroded in place), the valve body would lift high enough I saw "MOEN" imprinted in the plastic, leading me here.
    Turns out you just fuckin untwist those escutcheons, the handles will be lifted straight up and out, then you can pop out the c-clip retainer above the washer, releasing the valve body to drop through the countertop.

  • @johnmack4470
    @johnmack4470 Год назад

    I think the allen wrench is 7/16" not 5.5 mm - made in US. Moen faucets that are neglected can be a bear to remove. I'd use some spray lubricant and let it sit a day or two if it's stuck. I personally only buy faucets with metal drains. They cost more but in my opinion are well worth it for longevity and durability. I also like pop ups - a step or two more but who wants to stick there hand into dirty water to open? Not the women I know. The more expensive Moen faucets also have cartridges which are far superior than the valves in the copper tubing.
    I would never use a hacksaw underneath either. A pipe wrench will usually get that big nut loose even if pipe dope was used.
    The C clips that hold the handles on can usually be popped off with a screwdriver BUT make sure you wear eye protection! Last resort would be to cut the C clip with a dremel type tool. No time was spent showing how to properly disassemble, and clean the drain or put in a new one which is extremely important.

    • @johnmack4470
      @johnmack4470 Год назад +1

      Sorry. The allen wrench is 7/32 not 7/16. 5.5 mm is probably almost exactly the same. To take off the C rings get them loose by carefully pounding the end of one with a hammer and small flat blade screw driver. You may loosen it enough that the opposite end allows you to put another flat blade screwdriver in the newly created slot and it will pop off. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!!!
      If that doesn't get it off try getting the ends of the horseshoe shaped ring toward you, then use a flat blade screwdriver on each end and push with moderate force. This should pop it off it didn't come off with the first method.
