I broke my left humerus at the top, and my left shoulder, in a fall on Memorial Day weekend. I saw an orthopedic surgeon two days later. He put my arm in a brace and assured me that the bones were lined up well. I began liberally applying comfrey salve that I had made in October of last year, twice a day, to my shoulder and over the entire upper arm. When I returned for my follow up visit at the two week point, he told me the interior part of the bone was well healed, and told me to remove the brace twice a day, giving me some simple exercises to do with my arm hanging down straight by my side. I am now completely out of my brace and have regained about 70% of the function of my left arm, at only 5 1/2 weeks post injury. I am 67 years old, and was told to expect a minimum of eight weeks before even beginning physical therapy. Praise God for His gift of this healing herb!! ❤
I just wrote you a reply because the same thing happened to me and I’m 68. Mine didn’t heal because the brace didn’t immobilize the arm, and I went back and it was horribly damaged! He gave me another brace and physical therapy, and now 10 months later, it’s still not healed because of lack of blood flow, and I have Lyme, which restricts blood flow. I’m low in iron and now I need another MRI and a CT scan! I won’t get that until August: 11 months after I broke it! Then, I have to get back to see gay he says. I wish I had a decent doctor who treated this properly, and I knew about comfrey! They told me nothing about healing this.
Next time, I’m taking your advice! But I hope I don’t do this again!
I’m alone running a house and I’m only 4’ 9”, so I’m always up on ladders and falling!
Best of luck to you!!
try quick oatmeal flakes instead of flour
Im a big fan of comfrey. I had a knee replacement, which of course involves cutting away bone and attaching the implant. I used comfrey compresses as soon as stitches were out, and at my 6 week checkup the surgeon was amazed that already the bone was about 80% regrown. There are also comfrey tablets, or you can make a comfrey tincture...
@@YtGirl999i dont know. Its great at promoting healing of injuries, in my experience. but yours is a physical dislocation Sorry.
6:54 you could use comfrey ROOT powder for the thickener. Plus the root is very medicinal. Using a little of each, leaf, stem, root and flowers makes a complete healer. I hope your daughter heals quickly and completely. Today I am going out to our wetland area and harvesting willow bark.
I’m a 63 yo diabetic and had to have knee replacement after I got home I would rub comfrey salve on it away from the stitches 3 times a day by day 10 I was walking around without any cane at 8 weeks surgeon released me till next year follow up
You are amazing! I saw your video a few days ago. I have comfrey in my garden because either you or Carolyn and Josh mentioned it a while back. Comfrey works for strains! I did it for my son who was in a lot of pain and he can’t believe it. He has applied it for 3 days 3 times a day and he is getting better and better. THANK YOU!
A few years ago my daughter's 5-6 lb. chihuahua fell off the bed and broke her leg just above the knee. She was taken to the vet for surgery to pin the bone, but the bone was too tiny so the vet wanted to amputate. My daughter called me for help as I am an herbalist. I knew the little dog wouldn't keep a poultice on, so we gave her homeopathic comfrey (Symphytum officinale) for a month or so. The little dog limps a bit (barely noticeable) and can even run. The vet surgeon didn't even try to realign the bones, but the comfrey was amazing.
What is homeopathic comfrey? Also, is it possible to use dried comfrey leaves to heal a broken bone? My sister broke her leg and wants to use comfrey but I think she ordered the dried leaves. Can you tell me if it’s possible to use that and how to apply it? Thank you so much 🙏🏽
@@Megan41ish Yes, you can use dried or fresh comfrey. Fresh is best but I knew the doggie wouldn’t leave a poultice on, so I chose a homeopathic form that is a special form of the herb produced to focus on the energy of the herb rather than the medicine. It is applied to sugar pellets or tablets, then dissolved in water or the mouth. If dissolved in water, it can be dipped or rubbed on the damaged area.
I would constantly see soaking the leaves in a little water to soften then applying the leaves and liquid daily as a poultice. But please constantly set also using homeopathic comfrey called Symphytum 30X or 200X potency 3-4 times daily for weeks.
Many years ago I saw photos x-rays of a crushed leg bone that reformed and came back together using fresh comfrey poultices over several months.
You can also soak the dried comfrey root, grind it and use it n a poultice.
@@1charlastar886 Thank you so much!! The leg bone story is unbelievable. Gives me hope for my sis cuz the docs told her that there is no blood flow towards the injured part. So happy the doggie’s alright :)
Have a blessed day!
@@Megan41ish Megan, if there was absolutely no blood flow, your sister would have gangrene in her leg. If there is no gangrene, THERE IS HOPE FOR REPAIR. Use both the comfrey poultice and the homeopathic comfrey Symphytum and don’t give up hope.
@@1charlastar886 you’re absolutely right. There is some blood flow but not a lot. I will convey this message. Thank you so much for taking the time, so nice of you 🙏🏽
Thank you for your demonstration. I have heard lots about comfrey but it's great to actually see how you can apply it topically ❤
Thank you for this, hope I won’t need it but glad to have the recipe. Wish I would have had it 7 years ago when I broke my ankle. I’m learning so much. I proof your never to old, 62 years young.
I've had comfrey on my list of plants to work with in the future. This video has pushed thus herb to the top! My son has ITP & can only take Tylenol as well. So glad to hear how comforting it is for injuries.
Thank you!
I recently sourced comfrey from the wild and put it into my garden. It will hopefully take off and spread and give me the benefits of medicinal and garden uses.
Thank you for this video I love comfrey and have a huge plant of it The thickner that i love to use when making a poultice is physillium husk its fels nicely with no mess
This is new to me...and so very timely. A friend of mine slipped on her floor and strained her ankle pretty badly. Allopathic medicine...well, you know. I will tell her about this poultice and will also try to find some fresh and make her one. I should grow this myself. I think I will. (Eastern Oregon). Thank you, Melissa.
Well this is very helpful! I made some for my husband’s broken toe but it was soooo runny! I did not know about the binding agent to add. I just chopped up Comfrey with water, put in bag and froze. Pulled out a piece and wrapped around his toes. Big mess when it thawed. He only used it once because of the mess. Now I will make it the correct way and keep to have on hand. Thank you so much for your informative videos😊
Love my comfrey, I have it growing throughout my property.
I just planted my comfrey into the garden. I've babyed is for seeds to plant. I can't wait until I can harvest some.
Once comfrey spreads, it is nigh impossible to stop. Maybe you planted a hybrid, that does not make seeds? If so, bravo. If you have a version like the russian one, it makes seeds. You can prevent this by clipping it short when you see the flowers.
One inch of root can make a whole new plant. The roots go down about eight feet deep.
Thank you... stay well
Very nice video ❤️
Thank you for this video on Comfrey! I have quite a lot of it growing in our garden, and have made salve from it and from plantain, but have never tried a poultice of any kind. After watching this video I will be trying it!
Greetings to Ms Melissa and the group. My grandmother used comfrey in her medicinal garden. I found it interesting what was said about ingesting comfrey, as i believe that she made a hot tea and also drank it after juicing it. But i guess we know more about it than we did say 30 years ago when it comes to liver damage?
I was wondering where to best place is to get the plants to grow? Sadly my grandmothers supply is now part of a concrete jungle.. progress 😳
I usually blend the confrey as is without adding water and itd great
Murdock leaves are extremely good as well
Thanks
Medicinal grade essential oils can be added to the poultice for an added benefit. Not if theres an open wound. Thyme & wintergreen are beneficial for sprains, muscle issues, etc
love it....knitbone
Awesome!
I have a huge plant that began growing out from the edge of my compost pile. So loved your detailed RUclips. I’m guessing I can dry/dehydrate some to have on hand in the winter. Do you know how long I can keep the poultices in the freezer?
I would also be interested in how long the poultice will retain viability in the freezer.
Like anything it slowly degrades after harvest but six to nine months is what I do
Very helpful. Today I hurt my foot. Not sure if broken or sprained. Have comfrey plant. Made poultice. Wrapped for the night. Hopefully I will be waaaay better in the morning!
Did it work?😊
How is your foot doing these days?
Does it matter which kind of comfrey? I know about Russian and True Comfrey. Does it make a difference? Very well made video with excellent information. Ty for sharing
Will this help with rotator cuff injuries?
I wonder if this would help with knee pain from just plain old wear and tear.
Will this help a torn rotator cuff??
Great video! The only thing I would have mentioned is that applying any form of ice directly to skin can cause frost bite. Maybe applying one of those half gauze layers to her skin, then the poultice would soak up the juices and protect against frost bite?
Applying ice to an injury will not cause frost bite. It's done every day in the sports world with no frost bite
Could she do Epsom Salt soaks as well, or would that be contraindicated?
I started some comfrey this spring on our new property. I really wish I had some big enough to harvest some leaves. I’m having real issues with my ribs and pain. They are not as stable as they should be and feel very bruised. I can feel them moving but X-ray doesn’t reveal any breaks. I think a poultice would help the inflammation and pain.
Maybe loose at the breast plate
0:09 an amazing plant
Would of been nice to show us the plant up close leaves and flowers and stem. For those who don't know what it looks like.
Maybe comfrey root powder as thickener for at thicker poultice?
What was the site you talked about that you like buying herbs from if you don't grow them?
Can you reuse the compresses of Poultice?
Or are they once and done?
Can it be use on swallowing knees
Could you combine comfrey with castor oil ?
Can you used wipes or paper towel?
How important is it to use the top part of the plant and not just random leaves? I tried to make my husband a comfrey poultice for his hurt knee a number of years ago, and I suppose it worked, but his knee ended up locked in place. He said he will never use the comfrey again because of that, but I wonder if I used it improperly.
Comfrey speeds up healing but it can’t set bones into their proper place, you need a Doctor for that.
Anybody know if an old tendon wound that has scar tissue can be healed using comfrey or should i break rhe tissue down and put poultice on?
will this help with bone spurs?
Wil this help with swollen joints and arthritis?
Yes I use comfrey salve on my hands and knees. After applying the salve I put peppermint oil on. It works amazing 😁
From what I have read they are no longer suggesting to put cold packs on inflamed areas, that heat actually assists the healing whereas the cold slows the bodies response.
I've also read that information.
Heat increases circulation. Cold reduces inflammation.
The cold helps with the pain, reducing the inflammation when the pain is too high is what our goal is.
Cold reduces pain and inflammation - swelling. Heat brings healing agents from the body in fluids and blood - which the comfrey is doing too.
Are the poltice reusable?
Melissa, I am near Spokane and have not seen comfrey at any nursery. Any suggestions? Thanks
In the full article on my website (linked in video description) I linked to online source for plants
Thank you for your video. I have my first 2 comfrey plants ready for a big harvest. I want to know if anyone has tried to freeze dry it yet? I assume because its a herb I can.
Freeze drying is phenomenal for herbs
My thoughts also!! I’m sure it would retain more of the properties!
@@MelissaKNorris I have freeze dried a ton of other herbs one of my favorite things to FD actually. I think I will blend the comfrey up with water and then FD.
try wrapping the compress with plastic wrap--stops the leaking
QUESTION-Melissa, I’ve tried to go to your website to register for the free mini herb series, but the link isn’t working. When you have time can you please help.
Just got that fixed, thanks for letting me know, here's the link melissaknorris.com/herbal-waitlist/
@@MelissaKNorris Thank you so much. I was able to sign up.
You can only use leaves for tea and it has to be very very weak and never used for more than two weeks, whereas the root can only be used externally and until the wound/bone is healed completely. Hope this helps.
This is my first year growing comfrey. My leaves are WAY bigger and wider, like the size of my hand. I wonder if I have the wrong plant 😬
My plants are much bigger and bushy as well.
Mine are huge too.
Im sure the reason Melissa’s plant is so small is because she harvests from it often. My leaves a much bigger too, and is way over due for a harvest.
I believe MLK’s comfrey is fairly young. The more established & older plants as with any plant will be bigger.
My leaves are huge too. A little fun info. True comfrey aka Russian comfrey has flowers that are a lavender pinkish very light purple. The hybrid is a more of a darker blue purple. The true comfrey is suppose to be more potent than the hybrid.
Hi, can I use store brought dried bulk comfrey leaf for this also, and or comfrey root ?
Yes on the leaf, the root once dried isn't going to work for a poultice well
Thank you please keep teaching us GOD BLESS@@MelissaKNorris
Can you use comfrey on dogs joints?
I've not researched with pets
I used a poultice of comfrey and Neosporin to heal a quail rooster that was beat around the face by some hens. I did not think he would survive. Three days later and he is crowing again 😂
That's an awesome story!

Can this heal a spinal cord injury
What a great question!!! Somebody needs to do a study on this. NIH, are you listening?
Why some confrey have blue flowers and some have white flowers? Is it the same?
There are different varieties of comfrey, I'm only familiar with the blue flower variety

Why not just use less water?
KNIT BONE !! Symphytum Officiinalis
You planted comfrey with fruit trees, but I hear it can be invasive. Have you experienced that?
Nope

Your kids are in school in July?
This was filmed the last week of school. I don't have the capacity to film and edit the day of posting
I thought comfrey was a yellow flowering stalk 🤦🏼♀️
That's mullen
I can't take Tylenol, I get a stomach ache from it that I could end up in the ER. You do all these great homesteading things but send your child to a school, why not homeschool?
You should really listen to the video I did on homeschooling here if you're interested on why/how we make decisions for our children
Why would you put it in a sock? That is disgusting!!
Makes perfect sense to me, since it's going on an ankle 🤔
@@NancyBeegle it does not make sense. That is disgusting.
@@tienkami Okie dokie, then. Thankfully, we're all entitled to our opinions, and as adults, we can agree to disagree. If I had comfrey growing last June when I broke both sides of my ankle and my shin, I'd definitely have done exactly as was done in this video. Have a blessed evening.
