The birthday party scene is still one of the biggest jumps I've ever had when watching a movie.
It was great. I still remember the first time I saw it when the movie came out. Especially coming on top of laughing at Merrill yelling at the kids in the video to move out of the way.
The leg in the cornfield always creeped me out so much. The parts where you never fully see it like the hand under the door, sooo creepy.

I love that this movie isn't your typical horror movie but still does an amazing job creating a creepy atmosphere. It really makes you go through a lot of emotions too which I appreciate. Seeing the alien walk by as a kid was a memorable experience lol. 👽

I remember everyone saying the movie sucked shortly after it came out. I always liked it and in recent times, I've only heard few people say they didn't like, so I can't help but to think it was just a bandwagon at the time to hate on this movie. Like people went "oh, that was a good movie!", then they read that some critic said "this movie is like an amateur fest of film-making and yack yack yack" and those same people switched to "psh, Signs? That movie sucks..."
I think I’ve seen Signs like more than 50 times? That’s the most brilliant about Shyamalan films, you discover new things each and every time.

Mel Gibson plays this part soooo well! This was one of the first scary movies I saw as a kid and it terrified me even though you rarely see the aliens. It's just so eerie and creepy with this realistic portrayal of how people would be in denial, which makes the viewer more nervous. After this movie came out my sister went out with her friend for halloween as the kids from signs and they wore tin foil hats LOL. This movie is almost more about a mans struggle with his faith vs aliens. So well done.
Saw this movie when I was 10, was the only time in my life I have ever felt legitimate fear from a movie, I mean I couldn't sleep or anything it was bad. My mom was so mad at my poor Dad lol. I still can't do night time corn mazes around Halloween, my brain just starts to panic

They may have come from a hell dimension, not space. In myths from around the world, demons have trouble with water and other elements, like wood. Notice that they are neither armed nor even wearing clothes.

M. Night's "Village" and "Lady In The Water" are also personal favorites of mine. Signs is deffos up there too.
Lady in the Water got a lot of hate by critics and I always found that funny because.... yeah, that was sorta the point. He literally made a whole movie dedicated to sticking his middle finger up at critics basically.
Still one of my favorite films of the past 20 or so years. And I think it's still arguably M. Night's best.
This is the only film that effectively made me afraid of aliens. Like its so simple but so well done. Still creeps me out to this day ❤️

Speaking of seeing weird shapes outside your window, my uncle once went up really really early in the morning for a bathroom trip, looked outside and for a moment could have sworn he saw a troll hunched up on their tool shed. Just this big lump staring at him through the window. Turns out it was an Eagle Owl 🦉 One of our biggest owls, it can have a wingspan of almost 2 meters, but apparently side hustles as a troll 😅

I've never noticed before that the only time the baby monitor ever REALLY tunes in to the aliens. Is when all four family members are in physical contact with each other.

What most people seem to skim over is his wife's death. Deep down I thought "why not dreams, or visions instead of killing his wife" then it dawned on me. The hardest, most difficult things to forget are memories locked in by trauma. Things like the loss of a loved one, immense stress, and risk to your health and/or sanity, all stick with us no matter how hard we try to forget. To get him to remember the message no matter what, he needed a traumatic event to make sure it wouldn't fade. Nothing lasts longer than the loss of those you hold dear.

I love the kitchen scene where everyone starts to lose it but ends up in a group hug just before they hear the aliens on the baby monitor. You would be scared out of your wits! No wonder he was stressed out. I love this movie so much it scared the crap out of me.;
i literally gasped out loud when i saw this in my sub box!! This was one of my fav scary movies from when I was a kid. We lived in Ohio, middle of no where, surrounded by cornfields... me and my cousin had a wild year thinking there were aliens in the fields. So excited to watch you watch this, thanks for reacting to it!! :D

I think Gibson's character is going through a lot more than the loss of his wife. His wife died in a seemingly senseless and horrifying way. The way she died caused his loss of faith. If she had died of cancer would he have reacted the same way? I don't think so. The grief would still be immense but he wouldn't have had to experience things like seeing the person who killed her as he's walking around town. That's why this movie's twist, that none of it was senseless, works for me. I can completely understand why he felt the way he did so that payoff was satisfying. Merrill didn't act that way because Merrill only knows the loss, his sister in law was killed in a car accident. He sees her death as a part of life. I think that's why the kids relate to Merrill so well. Their dad's anger is a barrier to them. I don't think Merrill's "I don't want to see that look in your eyes again" speech is what caused him to regain his faith or leadership. I think it was the moment when he recalled the conversation he had with his wife and he realized how all the pieces fit together. I think when they came out of the cellar it was about doing what they could to help the son, nothing more than that. Faith or no faith, he still needed to help his son.
You’re exactly right - it’s not science fiction, it’s a movie of faith. The creatures aren’t aliens, they are demons.
Additionally, the children and Merrill miss the man who prayed with them and comforted them with his and their faith. Merrill even asks him to return to the way he used to be and comfort him. The kids ask for prayer.
They all grieve for Colleen, but they are also grieving the loss of their faith filled father and brother

This is one of my favorites. It's funny and scary at the same time. Best funny scenes are the closet scene and when everyone has the aluminum caps on their head.
I love this movie so much. Partly because you can interpret the creatures in your own way. For example, what if they were in fact demons? Let me explain... This whole movie was based on the signs life shows you, or your destiny. It revolved around Mel Gibson's faith so much. They claim the creatures don't like water but you never see it happen until it's at their house, when they use the water the Father would bring Bo (his little angel) could be that with him being a clergyman that the water he brings her was holy water he blessed for her unintentionally. Just a wild possible interpretation I've heard that i thought was interesting.
Awhile back I saw some behind the scenes stuff about the movie...the thing that stood out the most to me was that apparently the dinner table scene was filmed only a couple days after the 9/11 tragedy. So the atmosphere was already so emotionally charged before filming started and it comes across in everyone's performance. Even though the kids were young at the time I'm sure that to some degree even they understood that something was off and bad things had happened. Its a powerful scene to begin with and that backdrop makes it even more powerful.
Kids have a really good sense of things. Even if they can't quantify what is wrong they always sense it.

I'm so, so glad you picked up that the movie ISN'T Mel Gibson vs Aliens. It's the story of Graham's (Mel Gibson's character) journey back to his faith. I would probably put this movie in a Suspense / Thriller category more than Science Fiction. Too many people see "aliens" and immediately jump to Science Fiction. When really, the aliens are more of a backdrop to the actual story. The same with, "The Abyss" (1989). Which is a movie you two should also react to. People see "aliens underwater" and immediately jump to Science Fiction. I would also place it in the Suspense / Thriller category. While "The Sixth Sense" most definitely has Supernatural undertones, I wouldn't put that in the Horror category either. I think it's more in the Suspense / Thriller category as well.

This and Shudder Island are 2 of my favorite "horror"/thriller films. It's all about what you don't see, or the mysteries tugging you along, that make them have the right amount of tension. And I love how personal the story is, how it at it's heart is just about a family dealing with the loss of a mother/wife and faith (and I say that last part as someone who is not religious at all. I totally respect it).

Saw this one in the theater as well! Went in expecting to be scared to death (and I was at some points) but the whole theater laughed a surprising amount as well. Never understood the hate it got and continues to get.
I'm with you; I love this movie. I've watched it numerous times, and because there are so many levels it never gets old for me. Love each one of the characters; flawed or not.
I would classify it as a Sci Fi/Thriller/Drama. I feel like thriller is a forgotten genre where it doesn't quite meet the horror "requirements" but has those tense scare moments.
Another vote for "The Village" by M. Night! By far his best movie. At least in my opinion...
I just watched this movie last week for about the hundredth time and it is still one of my favorites.
A little trivia, the veterinarian who killed the wife (Ray Reddy) was played by M Knight Shyamalan himself. As for the genre of films, I believe they are known as "Atmospheric Thrillers" and these types of movies are usually thought of as "Spooky" and not "Horror". I think you would really enjoy another M Knight Shyamalan movie call "The Village". It's another atmospheric thriller with a huge twist at the end. It also stars Joaquin Phenix, Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt. And M Knight Shyamalan also makes an appearance in "The Village".
You guys should also watch The War of the Worlds movie with Tom Cruise. It’s another sci-fi that focuses on the family like how Signs did. I think you guys would love it.

SPOILERS FOR WAR OF THE WORLDS
I think one of the best and most unsettling thing about War of the Worlds is the fact that we were 100% defenseless. Human were useless in their attempts to fight back. There was no chance we were defeating them. What took them down was something we had nothing to do with which was disease. They just didn't have immune systems used to our planet's wide variety of germs. That's it. The lack of control humans had in that threat was very well done.
Exactly. The aliens are used as a backdrop for Cruise's attempt to keep his family safe.

As a Christian and as someone who lost their mother at the age of 12 and told God explicitly that I hated him I absolutely understand how Graham felt. I’ve grown since then. I’m 30 now and I believe in God and was able to regain my faith. This movie is so deep for me because it was something me and my mom went to the movies to see it.
Took everyone a while to realize they were more Demon beings than aliens. Mel Gibson plays a priest. His wife gave him ''angels'' and the kids blessed the house and the water around. It's said in the movie by Joaquin Phoenix character that some people in middle east found a way to repel them.

This is my one of my top 5 all time movies, there were literally signs everywhere through the whole film. Every time I watch it again I see new signs I didn't see before. The guy who made this film is such an artist

This is my favorite M. Night film. Great storytelling when the big bad isn't as important as the family. We don't know who they are or where they came from nor do we care.
As a widow, I think Mel Gibson's character really nails the complex layers of grief and suppressed rage, fear, depression and hopeless one can feel. Especially, if they felt like their partner was the glue of the family.
Hi again guys! Saw your great reaction last night to "The Sixth Sense" At 15:10 in the video you guys missed M. Night again, as the man/neighbor who was the man that accidentally killed his wife, and warned of the "thing" in his kitchen..Told you he appears in his movies like Stephen King does...lol Great reaction again tonight! This really was a story about losing faith, the regaining it when you realize that some things are just meant to be, and maybe there's a bigger plan. Most people never review M. Night's "Life of Pi". It's not horror, but as usual, M. Night makes you think about the story. .
41:38 - 41:53 - EXACTLY the reactions I remember from our theater when we saw it there. What a great sequence -- and a great movie. Shyamalan has had a few duds but Signs, Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense are three great movies. (I liked The Village too even though we saw the twist coming a mile away)
I've been waiting and hoping for you guys to film a reaction to this! This film is phenomenal. Chris Stuckman did a fantastic analysis video essay on it. This and The Village are so underrated.
My favorite horror movie by far. It's so incredibly cheesy and so incredibly well directed. Absolute 10/10 on the enjoyment scale

To me, the music in this film is closer to "X-Files" theme than "Halloween", and for a reason, too.

Alot of people don't know but I saw an interview with the director M. Night and Mel about that scene and Mel came up on the spot with the "I'm losing my mind" on scene and M. Night loved it so much he kept it in.
I love your reaction. I think personally the whole film is a DRAMA at its core with a SCI-FI premise but executed and delivered in a HORROR / THRILLER method. I think it’s that core focus on the story and the characters and how they experience the terror, how they confront the unknown and how they emotionally are broken inside and sad/scared for their incoming potential doom which makes the film feel so much more than just scary, it feels heartbreaking. Their and your fear isn’t just something you feel, but it’s something you’re emotionally wrestling with - like how sad and bleak you feel inside that after everything that’s good that’s happened in your life… it’s all coming to this end which makes you question our entire existence on this planet.
I think the core theme which the DRAMA explores ultimately is how people encounter and overcome EXISTENTIAL DREAD. So the main theme of the story is how we cope we fear itself.
That’s why it works primarily as a drama while still feeling like horror, because it’s making the characters and us examine deep inside ourselves how these fears make us feel, beyond being scared. Fear is the beginning, it’s about how fear turns people to lose faith and shut down. How it makes us look our world and feel like our suffering is potentially meaningless. And how that fear can lead to inertia and depression.
In the end, what defeats that fear is the reality that if we don’t step up and act and fight for what we love, then yes fear and hopelessness will win. The main reason Graham finally succeeds is because of his love for his wife and his family. In that moment of fight or flight his instinct went to that memory of her and what she told him. Regardless of whether of not he believes in God, at that moment he knew he NEEDED to have something that could help him. So while his faith had been broken, it had never truly gone. Because in order to save his family he needed to do something which he couldn’t do for himself anymore - to believe, to see positive messages and hope where before he wouldn’t have looked for, nor seen for himself. It’s when his family is threatened and not just him that he finally lets that need for hope re-enter his psyche. So in a way, the aliens drive home Graham’s realisation that as much as his faith may be broken through the loss of his wife, it’s that same faith which he will use to protect the rest of his family. Sometimes we need to be shown what more we stand to lose before we realise we can actually have an impact on the outcome of events.
The conclusion shows Graham that hope is not just something that can come and go within our feelings and that when it’s gone we need feel hopeless about the fact it’s gone, it’s instead something we have to keep hold of and to fight to find every day in order to survive.

This is my favorite M.Night movie. He also has a small role in it. He plays Ray.
I love Signs. It gets so much hate for some reason, but it's such a great movie. I know people rag on it for the twist with the water. Like.. wouldn't they know not to come to earth with all the water or something, but MEH. It's a great movie and the wife part just always makes me tear up.
It can be a good movie overall but yeah, the water twist is bad. I think basically if you watch this as a family/faith drama/thriller it's fantastic but if you try to think of this film as a sci fi/horror film, then no, not great because the water thing makes absolutely no sense. With how highly acidic it was shown to be to them, they shouldn't have been able to even breath in our atmosphere, so I get the criticism, I just don't think it's that important to the main goal of the film, which to me, seemed like a film about family and faith in the face of fear. Personally, I'm an atheist but I still really really enjoy the film

It was not a mass invasion of Earth by the Aliens. The Army recruiter outlined what was going on perfectly. That is, if anyone in the audience was paying attention and listening.
SFC Cunningham: “I've got it figured. I've had two separate folk tell me that there have been strangers around. Can't tell what they look like, 'cause they're staying the shadows... covert-like. Nobody's been hurt yet, and that's the giveaway.”
Merrill: “I see.”
SFC Cunningham: “It's called ‘probing’. It's a military procedure. You send in a reconnaissance group, very small... to check things out. Not to engage, but to evaluate the situation... evaluate the level of danger. Make sure things are all clear.”
Merrill: “Clear for what?”
SFC Cunningham: “For the rest of them.”
Humans didn’t beat the Aliens back, force them off the Earth. They just left. Even leaving behind some who were wounded (the one in the climactic scene with the Hess family). They just figured out trying to take over the planet was more trouble than it was worth.
@@milescoburn1845 Okay, no need to quote the scene or imply that I wasn't paying attention, I've seen the film many times, thanks. But maybe you weren't paying attention, recon team clears for "the rest of them". It was a mass invasion, there were literally thousands of ships that arrived right before the big night of attack. The few that arrived first and created the signs in the crops for navigation were the recon team but the night they attacked was a large scale, world wide co-ordinated invasion that the radio reported they were "harvesting" us. It was an invasion, otherwise they wouldn't have brought down literally thousands of ships to Earth and it wouldn't have been world wide and everyone attacked in the same night and celebrating on the news as they left. And yes, they were fought off, or it's implied they were fought off, as the focus stays so tightly on the main family, we can't know for sure but the characters talk about people having found a way to beat them right before the family figures out how to beat them. Even Ray had a gut feeling about the water, it wasn't going to be hard for people to figure out.
Also, NONE of that at all changes that they shouldn't have been able to breath in our atmosphere and even we, with current tech, can tell when a decently far away planet is likely to have water so they certainly should have been able to.
Because they weren’t aliens. They were demons. It wasn’t water they were reacting to, it was holy water. That’s why they made such a big deal about Bo being an “angel” at her birth - all the water she touched was blessed. It’s also why the global solution was found in Jerusalem.
Notice the little girl said "I dreamed this". She got her sense of premonition from her mom, who also had one when she was dying. Or, it was just a random coincidence :)
"Do you know Signs? The motion picture Signs? They found aliens, they ruined a kids birthday party"
I always think of that and nobody is going to guess what it's from lol. Good movie....always wondered what those kids were in after this, they were good actors

Cherry Jones is just wonderful in any role she performs. (Cop here). She is starring in Succession on HBO and she gives such warmth and gravitas to her roles. BTW I adore this movie. Im a grandmother with three kids and two grandkids, and my best friend had to hold my hand in certain scenes of this movie! lol

I love the mixture of Sci Fi, Religion and Psychic abilities- it makes an interesting structure. I love the spooky style shots of the Aliens like when he sees the one on the roof and then it reflected in the knife and then later the reflected shots on the TV.
The Aliens camaflogue is really interesting like when the Alien has hold of Graham, his hand matches the pattern on Graham's shirt. Also I love that Bo can predict things just like her Mum did.
I’ve seen this movie a few times but not in several years. I forgot how many funny moments there are.
My sister and I were obsessed with this when it first came out. We still love it!

Like I have said before, this movie is amazing. It is a lot more scarier than horror movies I'm used to watching, because this messes with your mind so much. The idea of these aliens being able to cloack themselves, it used to make me so scared even going to the bathroom for a shower. Like...man imagine that was true and they were watching us? there was something about the way the tension and horror elements were so put together. Another movie that made me feel like this was "Dark Skie" with Kerri Russel. You might like that one too.
That moment where Beau mentioned that the same show was on every station works now as a pretty concerning moment, but this came out not long after pretty much the closest I have ever seen that happening in real life. On 9/11 pretty much every single channel had coverage of the attacks, or the cable channel stopped operations for the day so people could tune to a channel covering it. I remember the Weather Channel and Cartoon Network had pre-prepared screens basically saying they were off-air due to the attacks.
6:57 I did the exact same thing in the theater! That part is underrated. I’d go out at night after seeing this and always look up on roofs expecting to see some thing.
This is one of my fav movies ever. Few movies have scared me as much. I saw it first when I was 10 tho so that might be it. But I find it fantastically creepy.
This isn't a horror movie. It's supense sci-fi. And the suspense is what gets me. This movie scared me more than any "horror" movie made this century.
I always interpreted Mel Gibson's behavior as a deep depression bordering on suicidal. Welcoming the end & just trying to distract the kids from their fear, until the moment the alien tries to open the cellar door & he snaps out of it
This and the sixth sense. When I first saw them they scared me. Now I watch them and the family moments make me cry. So good.
This is more of comedy than horror. Loved it!
absolutely loved this movie watching in theater back in 2002. so intense and one of the best scores ever
I feel like most people have missed the fact that Graham losing his faith has completely altered his family dynamics. So in addition to the loss of their mother, the children have lost the father that comforted them with his, and their, faith. To the point they ask him for prayer. They are drawn to their uncle who, although he doesn't express it well, still has his faith. We know this because he asks Graham to return to the man he used to be and comfort him.
Colleen tells Graham that the accident was meant to be, but he doesn't understand that was a message.
This movie is a sci-fi thriller/drama, 'The Sixth Sense' was a supernatural thriller/drama. A horror is typically an exaggerated thriller that has an element of death/gore which drives the story and a killer or killers that tend to hunt their victims and can have a supernatural element as well
It's one of my personal favorite too. The storytelling, cinematography, acting, music... ah!
