So. Nobodies going to mention how mind blowing it is that matt groening and the creator of hey arnold are brother in laws, like british families of royalty marrying eachother in an american and animation context. The question is was their success and mastery due in part to their meeting of the minds post their achievements, or was it totally serendipidious that two of the most genius animators and story tellers of the 90s who would create generationally defining masterpieces knew the same girl? Like wth. That should be a historical snapple fact

I was there! Harriet the Spy was a movie 8-year-old me was super-excited for. And... I'm not even sure at this point whether I remember it, or I just remember remembering it, but I definitely saw the pilot for Hey Arnold! that way. My response? "There's something I'll never watch!" The off-beat humor and... distinctive character designs put me off. But, maybe because it felt cool seeing something on TV that I'd seen debut in theaters, but I ended up watching it, anyway. And of course, there was so much more to the show than the pilot had conveyed! Hell, even though it was never one of my favorites, I actually ended up liking the episode of it, too - it worked so much better for me once I had a feel for who the characters were. Like, I'm not sure I was so aware of this as a kid, but I have never related to a character more than to Helga Pataki. I don't have her behavioral issues, but her obsessiveness, her dramatic nature, her self-awareness, her use of magical thinking to deal... These kinds of characters tend to be romanticized, but with Helga? The text definitely takes her feelings seriously, but at the same time, it gets into how messy and embarrassing it all is; it strikes an incredible balance there! And there's actually way more to her relationship with Arnold than I ever realized as a kid! Like, because they both experience feelings of loneliness and abandonment, and have to look out for themselves in different ways... I kind of got the feeling that Arnold felt connected to her there, and I need to stop, because I could talk about just this relationship all day. Ugh, I love this show so much!

If you like Helga so much, I highly suggest watching the MTV show "Daria" if you haven't already. Supposedly that was a reason why the show about the Patakis wasn't picked up by the once-interested MTV--network felt it redundant with Daria on.

At first, I didn't care about Hey Arnold since I didn't know what it'll be about. After seeing the show be in crossover games and people ranking it high on their nickelodeon show rankings, I decided to give the show a try. Hey Arnold turned out pretty well when I watched some episodes so far and I loved when he was a person who helped people and was a kid who lived a normal life like we all usually do. I wish they would continue with a sixth season and onward. It's still now one the best shows I've ever watched.

No matter what I'll probably always view Arnold's outfit as him wearing a kilt. As a kid I thought it was cool that he wore a kilt and no one cared, and as a kid before streaming, we missed episodes, so I never saw the (2?) episodes where he shows that it's a plaid shirt as a kid only ever as an adult. Anyway great show and still holds up now.

    • @Hakajin

I think a lot of people think he's a goody-goody; my dad and I did, growing up. But as an adult, I really don't think that's it. I think Arnold just has a highly developed sense of empathy. I think he especially identifies with feelings of loneliness and being left behind because of his parents. Plus, being that empathetic is also not something a lot of people understand, so that compounds the situation... He just has a lot of feelings! And I think also... And also because of his abandonment issues, he wants to feel needed by others. There are also times when he goes to extreme lengths to fix something or make up with someone, even when it's not his fault, and that, to me, seems like he wants a sense of control - he wants to believe that he can make things work out for the best, because the idea that you could end up on your own is too scary. ...I haven't thought about it that much.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
If you have any questions let me know
    Xx

The show was already in the direction you claim to hate so much ...
It was quite Liberal and based in a very multiracial city. The female character Helga was also probably the true protagonist of the show. Craig said so himself.
But yeah youd rather the White Savior complex type stories of The Journal and The Jungle Movie.
Adknowledging racism and hatred abd how complex that can be is not "white guilt". Only White Nationalist types without empathy say this.

It’s my favorite cartoon of all time. So clearly I don’t have a problem with it being multi-racial. Doi!!
Being multi-racial isn’t “liberal” or woke, it’s just being accurate to city life. I’m all for it!
Being “woke” or “sjw” is when the show panders and insults cultures by tipping the scales. They make all white men villains or insecure pansies. They show women with no realistic human flaws. And every conflict is ALWAYS about white guilt and sexual bigotry. These issues are not prevalent in the real world and people see that and know that it’s just pandering.
I wouldn’t want to see HA! Go this pitiful direction like many other shows have.
Good storytelling requires its characters to be HUMAN, flaws and all. No white saviors, no black gay female saviors, no saviors AT ALL. Just real characters.
