Hi Lisa. Please make a video dedicated to that dreaded TV issue. There’s always a fireplace competing for the space in the family room. I don’t know what to do. How should the perfect family room be built to accommodate a large enough screen TV AND a fireplace?
The reason guy's mount their TV's too high is the fact that their necks are frozen from being too long at the sport bars. { Lisa your rule for height also goes for hanging art.} Thanks for another fun video ❣
What a great fix for the rug size & shape issue! Thanks. And we all know almost no one wants to sit in the front row of a movie theatre because of that very neck issue. People forget that table heights & TV placements need to be scaled for people usage.
All great. I’d add that TVs should never be positioned above fireplaces! They ruin the unique focus that the fireplace should be, and so cheapen the look of the room.

It seems like you really have to see what's been done to determine if the rug looks right. The back of my sofa had to be up against a wall, so having my rug not extend all the way to the wall across from the sofa looks better than putting a rug allhat extends all the way to the opposite wall would have. My rug extends out from under the sofa, but allows a bare floor walkway between the edge of the rug and the wall opposite the sofa, and it looks perfect that way. That walkway also helps keep my rug clean for those times when it's not convenient to take my shoes off when I first come in the door like I usually do.

For whatever reason, really plain rugs out of Morocco have been trendy for awhile, but you can still find some older Persian rugs fairly inexpensively on ebay, or sometimes huge rugs out of India or Pakistan at a thrift store, or whatnot. I DO NOT agree that TVs should always be mounted low. It all depends. People that claim TVs mounted higher will hurt your neck are just repeating boilerplate advice, much like don't swim after eating. For one thing, you can mount the TV with a downward angle. In any case, IMO is it is quite comfortable to lounge in a living room close to a higher TV because it is often MORE comfortable to watch TV with your head tilted back a little. With a low TV you need to sit up straighter on a comfy couch (who does that after work?) or tilt your head down if you're reclining. People often watch TV while reclining. Also, with modern floor open floor plans you can view the same TV from short to large distances. The one preparing a meal will watch it standing in the kitchen, often over a high bar. And it may be mounted on a very high wall. It would look very strange and be impractical to have a low mounted TV in this case. The advice to always mount a TV low is especially out of date now that there are TVs that do double duty as displaying art, as with the Samsung Frame, and indeed look like a picture frame. It all depends on what you consider the TV to be. Do you conceive of it as a picture on the wall that fits , or as merely a display device to sit down and watch TV shows? Is your style contemporary or traditional?
“Having your head tilted back a little…” Thats the key which is why I said 30 degrees. It’s scientifically proven to be in that range instead of to high or low. Both can cause health related injuries over time. Far from an old wives tail. Hope that helps. ☺️
@@LisaHoltDesign - Science is irrelevant. It's highly subjective because people don't always sit in front of a TV on a couch and watch like in times past. TVs these days aren't just TVs. They're just monitors. My wife streams fitness classes to ours and works out in the living room. Now you might watch TV sitting, standing, or lying on a couch or on the floor, or from near or far. With open floor plan the same big TV is watched from the dining room, kitchen, and living room. A high TV works fine for many people, especially with contemporary style and high ceilings.
You can definitely layer floor covering but there’s a lot to consider when doing it. Will it become a tripping hazard? Is there a better solution for the space? Do the rugs work well together when layered? Do they clash? Does it build up the depth to much? Does the backing of the top rug slip on the lower rug or damage it in any way. Lots to consider.
Actually there are tricks to getting affordable rugs in custom sizes. There are flooring vendors who can cut to size and edge them. If you need help and tricks of the trade you might want to check out dezignspace.com ☺️

It should be at a comfortable height for you personally and from where you will be watching it from.
One thing you failed to mention is hanging pictures to high.
You’re on the money
The room at the 4 minute mark has an "epic fail" area rug, at least according to your first rule.
Well spotted. ☺️
Hi, Lisa, I want to sign up your design club, how to find the coupon code for yearly sub?
Hi Sujuan,
Just go to dezignspace.com and enter code lovelisa
Look forward to seeing you there. ☺️
@@LisaHoltDesign Will do. Thank you!
What is your (or anyone reading this) opinion on using 2 rugs staggered on top of each other instead of just one rug? I’ve seen it in DIY shows.
@@LisaHoltDesign Thanks Lisa!
Love this!
You can find a rug to be the right size unless it needs to be huge!
Actually there are tricks to getting affordable rugs in custom sizes. There are flooring vendors who can cut to size and edge them. If you need help and tricks of the trade you might want to check out dezignspace.com ☺️
Great video. The TV…..48” to the centre of the tv?
48” is the diagonal
@@LisaHoltDesign thank you for replying. I thought you gave a measurement of on average how high the tv should be?
Not true! I tried to get a custom sized rug and the cost was insane! I just went with the 8x10, which was slightly too small but my wallet is way bigger by going with a standard size,
Thanks for sharing!

Question on television height: is 48" The height of the top of the TV, the middle of the TV or the bottom of the TV once it is hung. Thank you so much!
Usually the inches correspond to the TV diagonal, two different 43” TVs can have different lengths, heights etc…doesn’t help when trying to plan 😅
Myshelle is correct, it’s the diagonal unless stated otherwise.
@@LisaHoltDesign oh...okay. I thought you meant 48" up from the floor to the bottom of the tv
Sorry, I’m now confused after the comments: so hanging tv 48” from floor refers to what part of tv?
I mounted my TV so that the top edge is 48 inches above the floor. That's the height of the top of my head when I'm sitting on the sofa.
