How to Install Sliding Bypass Closet Doors | Every Step in Detail!

  • In this video, I remove some bi-fold doors that were falling apart and replace them with sliding bypass doors. Luckily framing for sliding doors and bi-folds are (almost) always the same size so swapping them out is pretty easy. After installing the new closet doors, I also show you how to cut down the doors so that they can slide over the floor hardware. I end the project with adding a piece of trim to give the closet a more finished look and finally, added the door pulls.

Thank you for saving the day. My husband and I were trying to re-install old sliding doors and couldn't figure out why we were having so much trouble. We didn't realize the hardware has two different sizes and that the 3/8" one needs to go in the back.

We had sliding on two closets and hated them. Replaced with bifold and it's so much better. So all depends on your needs and location.

Agreed! I did a bi-fold in my hallway but that was my only option because it was a small opening and in a tight location.

We had some irregular sized, damaged bi-fold doors. We considered adding wood spacers on each side to enable much lower cost doors. Finally, we landed on sliders...the cost savings, and not having to adjust the closet entry dimensions. With the sliders, we can leave one side open without encroaching on space within an already small bedroom.

    • @Fingerprintguy

That's exactly where we are at, irregular closet door opening. Bought bifold doors slightly larger then installed a roller kit like above.@@bknapp9728

Lol yeah looking to do the same and came across this, sadly the opposite of what Im needing to do. Im turning an office closet into an entertainment cabinet, already built shelving and mounted the tv, took off the sliding doors, but like the idea of closing it off with bifold so the room looks neater.

I remember installing doors like that. They had a mechanism that would prevent them from self-opening. Basically, you had to use a little bit of force, to move them from the "stop position".

Just an observation - the kit you used is an extruded aluminum track, which I’ve had great success with. The one linked in the video description is a formed steel track which (personal opinion) is not as good. Also, I can mail ordered extruded aluminum track up to 106” for wider openings whereas the steel track seems to stop at 72”. Good job as usual!

Thank you for this instructional video. I'm getting ready to convert my double bi-fold doors into bypass sliding doors. This video was what I needed. Can you tell me, please, if there will be a gap (or space) inbetween the front door and the back door. The reason I'm asking, is I will be using a quarter inch think poplar board as a mending plate for each of the bi-fold doors, making them into four solid doors. I want to know if the thickness of the mending plate will interfere with sliding the doors back and forth. Please let me know. I may have to re-think my idea to mend the doors together. Thank you.

If you would be so kind to answer. I have bypass doors installed in 1964. The wheel is just on a post that is inserted into the top of the door. Do you know what it is called. Ive found hardware for bifold doors but none say bypass. They are old heavy mirror doors if that makes a difference. I love how this is step by step. I am hoping i dont have to replace my doors, but i know what video i will watch if i need to. Thanks, Diana

Nice install, I did 4 sets of these. But....will that top trim piece have enough clearance to allow the front door to swing out to be unhooked if you want to remove them to paint elsewhere? Obviously the bottom divider would have to be removed.
