Let's play around in Drop-D tuning (Practice Log #1)

    For the last 15 years, I've treated drop-d tuning like it was the plague. I rarely committed to songs that required it, and even when I did venture to its shores - I couldn't get back to standard tuning quick enough.
    But over the past week, I've turned over a new leaf.
    While learning Rocky Mountain High (which is in drop-d), I decided to keep my guitar there - and forced myself to play around. Explore. Have some fun. See what new things I could have fun with. In the end, a lot of fun stuff was discovered.
    In this video, I'll share some of the riffs, tips, techniques, and other cool stuff I picked up along the way. I am by no means an expert in the land of drop-d, but I do feel confident that a lot of these nuggets of guitar goodness may be helpful to you too!
    Enjoy :)

    Dave, I've only been playing for just over a year, your lessons have really helped me move forward. I was hung up for quite a while until I saw your "Murder ballad" lesson, right after that I saw Colter Wall in Calgary (way up north eh?). Another song he sang was ride me down easy, I loved the sound but couldn't get it right. Then I came across a gentleman named Rex Richards and he did a video lesson for me to help me learn it.
    It is in Drop D but he taught me a neat trick, drop all the strings down, then put your capo on all the strings but the low E on the 2nd fret- Boom- drop D tuning. Cover all six and back to standard and it also makes stretching to reach some of those difficult chords a bit easier.
    He explains it pretty good.

    Great video! This opened up a lot of doors for practicing in drop-d. One other thing I like to do is throw in another note while doing a power chord in drop-d. So for instance, bar the D-A string on second Fret and play the E with the ring finger on the 5th fret of D (4th)string. Gives you a lot fuller sound.

    One thing I like to play around with is instead of dropping the e to d, I like to bar the bottom 5 strings at the 2nd fret with a capo.. It gives the same effect.. I also tune one of my guitars a full step down, and with that capo trick I then have true drop d.. For some reason the normal g chord seems to work just fine also..

    Great lesson Dave, I'm a drummer but like to pick up the guitar from time to time.. Always played in standard as I'm a bar chord guy. Love Seger and Young for sure... Only drop D I do is Everlong by Foo Fighters but definitely gonna learn some new stuff. My original band played in Drop C, C#? Does anyone mess with that?? It was more metal/Pantera, Down sounding. Just curious..

    Very good point. I see a song that is in different tuning and I run for the hills.....Kinda the same thing I would do when I saw a barre chord in a line-up for a song. But alas, I have embraced the barre chords, they are now my friend. Maybe alternate tuning can become a friend too....hmmm...

    My issue is... once I tune to drop d, I never tune back. Lol Also, I bar the first three strings on the 5th fret with my ring finger and bar the rest of the strings below on the 3rd fret with my pointer finger. Same chord from standard but instead it's drop d

  • @scoggers1628
    @scoggers1628 6 лет назад

    Nice video. I also find that I rarely play in non-standard tunings, particularly half a step down; I really like the tone of it but don’t know that many songs in it and it takes longer to re-tune and from than drop D.
    Getting back to your lesson, I like the multiple shapes and voicings of the chords; helps expand your musical palette.
    What model is your Taylor, btw?

      Half step down tuning or Eb is the most like standard tuning of any of the alternate tunings. Anything you can play in standard you can play in E flat. It will just be down half a step. Hendrix played alot in E flat because it made the strings a little more spungey and easy to bend. Personally it's my favorite.

    • @joetroutt7425
      @joetroutt7425 4 года назад

      If you have you guitar tuned down a whole step it's in D standard and if you drop the top string down to C it's in drop C tuning. I have two guitars, one in E standard and one in D standard. It's nothing to quickly to raise and lower the top string one whole step.
