  • Film pokazuje budowę najtrudniejszych fragmentów „Wielkiego Muiru Japońskiego" (ang. The Great Wall of Japan w skrócie GWJ), Fragmenty te to falochrony o wysokości 22 m chroniące porty stawiane na prefabrykowanych skrzyniach żelbetowych o wysokości 14,5 m. Skrzynie te wykonywane są w suchych dokach i przyholowane oraz zatapiane na miejscu montażu. Pokazano dwa rodzaje bram zamykających akweny portowe w razie alarmu o tsunami. Pierwsza to brama przesuwna o wysokości 36,5 m a druga to brama przesuwno -- podnoszona. Końcowa scena filmu pokazuje koszty budowy muru.

The wall should have a drainage system that purposely allows water from tsunami to enter and when the tsunami retracts it can open the drains again to let out the excess water. This way, you don't have to fight the waves, but instead slow it down and let it hit the shores without the heavy momentum.

    Guaranteed failure.
    1. The wave was 40m
    2. They're underestimating the power behind the waves.

22 meters will help in some places but not all, I've seen videos talking about a tsunami close to 40 meters in northern Japan in 2011 also in 2004 when the Indian Ocean one hit reports there of more than 40 meters in certain locations.

Why not build reinforced concrete buildings with a minimum of 7 floors, with a public space on the roof, accessible by an elevator and stairs? The side facing the sea should have the form of a semicircle to disperse the impact of the tsunami. Windows on the sea side could be closed from the outside by reinforced steel shutters larger than the window, which would allow the water pressure to be spread over the concrete wall, all around the perimeter of the window. We also have to bury all the pipes and all the electrical and other wires 1m underground. All the goods, cars, and everything else, is replaceable. What matters is saving the lives of the residents.

Building multiple walls would have been great because just a single line of wall can't stop the shear force of wave and what if a medium sized ship hits the wall.. Can it withstand the pressure? Constructing at least 2 or 3 walls will be helpful to reduce the speed, strength and pressure of the water waves so that in mean time the people of coastal communities will evacuate to higher grounds

Maybe instead of totally contradicting the flow of the waves travelling in land why not just letting it pass by, by making a way or a passage for the waves to pass without wrecking havoc in Japan. That way it is assured that all the force generated by the waves will not hit totally. Because with this wall there might be a tendency that the wall will collapse if too much force will be applied on it. So that compromises the safety of Japans people and its infrastractures.

I still think walls dont work. It will build up. You need a wide ramp along the wall for the water to climb over and into a spillway to divert the water and a secondary wall taller then the ramp behind it along the spillway. Its easier to divert water then block it. That or a arrow head shaped wall into two seperate spillways. Aslong as you have somwhere for the water to go safely and effectively it wont build up

There has been a japanese people who disliked the wall idea thingy.
Its main reason is that the place will lose its Tourist attraction.
the ideology is also that its better to see the tsunami coming from afar and have more time to escape than to be confident that the tsunami will not go through... why? Because you cant see the tsunami from afar due to the wall blocking your view and ypu have less time to panic. Plus living in a sea-walled village makes you feel like you're in a jail.
Odds of tsunami being higher above the wall's limit is extremely likely, japan is in the pacific's Ring of fire.
Its best to keep the wall low and have lower damage than to have higher wall maintainance, so that it keeps the attractiveness that the tourist likes and lessen the damage.
If you want another solution, do the opposite of walls, build a tsunami trenches instead! It will redirect the tsunami somewhere else.

What will the wall do if a ship is on a head on collision? What if the wave level rises above 20m? What if the force of the tsunami comes over head and still floods the city? The wall is a good idea but it has many flaws. And only in the perfect situation will it work, but as we know, nature is unpredictable.

      > "What will the wall do if a ship is on a head on collision?"
Not much unless its cargo is TNT or something.
      > "What if the wave level rises above 20m?"
It'll spill over, obviously. But still considerably lessen the force of the initial impact.
      > "What if the force of the tsunami comes over head and still floods the city?"
If it floods the city, the city will be flooded.
      > "And only in the perfect situation will it work"
      I wouldn't call a 10m tsunami a perfect situation...

  • @valorum999
    @valorum999 8 лет назад +20

Looks really cool! Kudos. Some points: In some areas the 2011 wave reached 20m. Also chances are a ship could hit the wall directly. I don't think it could withstand a head on collision from a medium sized ship. Solution would be to connect the extended "staircase" towers and have a continuous steal beam mesh though that would affect the cost (probably a 10-20% rise of what I believe is already rather optimistic estimate for the price) For example the total length of the sea facing concrete dams in the Netherlands Delta-Project is around 30km completed at a cost of 7 billion. Thats more like 230 million / km So I think the 250 billion range would be more accurate. Finally, there is a emerging trend of finding ways to work with nature (rather then against it) such as creating natural coastal areas which are intentionally designed to flood, thereby more gradually dissipating the energy. So in conclusion I think it makes sense around economically high value areas like ports, dense cities and creating other "counter areas" which are designed to flood.

Everything behind the wall towards the land should be filled with water up to the height of wall ...the mass of water will counter the force of oncoming water.

Wow impressive. Even tsunami happen higher than wall, I think by that time tsunami over the wall and start to overflow, most of people already in the higher ground. It not just wall but they redesign the new town make his own people easier to evaluate when tsunami happen like school buildings on top of the hill. While they parent busy working, they don’t have to worry about they children safety if tsunami happen again for 30 years to come. The Japanese rebuild they own smart town if I can say that.

might be cheaper and more feasable to build new infrastructure more land-inwards, on higher ground or on stilts

@ ストライクフリー永遠の Of course not! They have sea walls already on many parts of the japanese coastline but these walls didn´t help in 2011 as we well know from hundreds if not thousands of videos. Some of these walls were 20 meters high and couldn´t prevent the incoming water from doing his total destruction. When the ocean comes for a visit you´ll have to move.
