I think Heather Duke’s red hair is actually a perfect touch. It is a symbol of the way she always wants to be red, always wants Heather Chandler’s social power. Her green wardrobe symbolizes her constant envy and her red hair symbolizes her having those dreams of power always on her mind. The film is better for this detail.
Plus it sets her apart from Chandler and McNamara. She's shorter than them both AND doesn't have Veronica's backbone, so it gives Chandler another reason just to bully her
It's not a film trivializing depression or suicide, but rather showing how superficial performative empathy is, how people will jump on a tragedy to garner attention or clout, how arbitrary social hierarchies actually are, and how we glorify and romanticize "death" in our culture. It's just a satire of EVERYTHING that's so prevalent now all over social media.
I feel that my intellectual shortcomings severely hinder my ability to process the latent messages submerged in the film. As an adult seeking improvement, I must seem out some literature on adolescent psychology. I will engage with our local hand of merchants and make the appropriate purchases in accordance with local supply capabilities.
I still can’t get over the casting being basically “Brad Pitt auditioned and didn’t get the part, Christian Slater got fussy and threw a fit which was giving Jack Nicholson vibes”
This is definitely one of those movies that was just ahead of its time…like barely. Like if it had come out in 1992 or 1993 when Nirvana was changing the whole cultural landscape it would have nailed those box office numbers.
Great video! I worked on Heathers (still have the crew jacket, shirt and parking pass). The original script (I was one of the first people hired for the crew being in locations I had to start early) is the only script that I ever read in my career that had me laughing out loud for the whole read (one sitting). I remember the original shooting script being much funnier and darker than the actual movie. Happens a lot in Hollywood. The wrap party was epic! The Prom You Never Went To was the tagline and took place in the gym of one of the school shooting locations. Lunch on set everyday ended with several of us hanging out at the prop truck and singing Marty Robbins EL PASO along with a tape of said song. We even sang it at the Prom Wrap party while the cast and crew slow danced. Was fun to see me in the crew pic. That was a long time ago (2nd movie I worked on). I start out in the middle of the shot at the very bottom before the camera moves down. Fun fact. Much of the AD crew was from PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE so we heard a lot of cool stories. Thanks again for the vid and have fun! no1ukn0
John Hughes was a filmmaker of the 80's, and his films captured the experiences of the older half of GenX. This film is so 90's, cynical and sarcastic, and really managed to capture the issues of 90's teens, aka. the younger half of GenX. When I was a teen, most of my social group was named either Sara/Sarah or Chris, we ended up giving them all nicknames. My husband and I named our daughter Veronica because of this film.
I absolutely LOVE Heathers. Can't explain it, but it's just...one of those movies that works for certain moods. I'm a bit particular about my dark comedies. It really is a good commentary piece. The way students acted over the deaths reminded me of the popular kids wanting to help me when i came back to school in a wheelchair. That lasted about a week and then i was one-handedly wheeling myelf in to classes late because no one would help.
I feel like this could've been a movie released around this time, but people dont act as controversial like they did back in the 80s so if heathers was made today it wouldnt be that groundbreaking
disagree, without giving spoilers american horror story deals with similar and other dark themes, even directly discussing school shootings. I highly recommend it if you like movies like Heathers or shows like Yellowjackets, give AHS a try! (extreme content warning, ofc)
I love this film and jawbraker which is very similar (its half way between heathers and mean girls) This and pump up the volume made me love Christian slater 😅
Its pretty sad that something like the heathers couldnt be made today. Just censorshit and repetition. Someone should make something daring and interesting
I saw it in the cinema and it had a huge impact on my life. It resonated with me as I was a lone brunette with a bunch of blonde, very heatherish friends. I literally went to school after watching it and changed my friend group.
@@sargentoinkwinson4888you keep telling yourself that, bud That's like saying X ripped off texas chainsaw massacre because it plays on a farm and has kills
I saw at the theater & loved it so much that I stayed to see again, immediately afterwards, something you used to be able to do back in the day. I remember being so enthusiastic that I talked a bunch of coworkers to go see it, a group way above me socioeconomically. The were all pissed & walked out & let me know their dissatisfaction with my suggestion the next day. I went to see it again a few says later!
I was OBSESSED with this movie as a high school student (class of 1990). I would be on a watch list if I was in high school today. I made murder/suicide Valentine's in art class. I had a Heathers themed party with croquet and invited every love triangle in my grade. Luckily I don't think 99% of the people I encountered knew Heathers existed. The one exception being a guy I competed with (unsuccessfully) for girls who used the "greetings and salutations" whenever possible.
I loved Heathers as a young teen and would watch it practically every night I stayed over at a friends house because she owned a VHS copy. I can still quote Heather and Veronica's back and forth after the party. "It's on the hallway carpet. I got paid in puke!" Anyway, yeah, Christian Slater. That face. That voice. No match to that other guy that auditioned.
I describe Heathers to my friends as “a movie about high school with a side of murder and terrorism” and then refuse to elaborate and tell them to watch it. I love Heathers.
Films like Heathers and American Psycho are the best examples of having the characters be offensive but the film not being offensive itself. By having the characters that are bigoted or creepy be the thing u are supposed to laugh at instead of making offensive jokes and have those be the things u are supposed to laugh at. There is a large difference between using bigotry as the butt of the joke vs just making a joke about every type of person so then it isnt “offensive” anymore since u are “making fun of everybody”
Things don't seem to change that much... The thing that surprises me is how much audiences, and specially young ones, became so aligned with corporations in terms of what they deem safe to watch.
Shannen was key. Without her " Heather Duke " the dynamic wouldn't have flowed as seamlessly between the other cast. She was raised Southern Baptist so probably just felt a bit self conscious about swearing or relying excessively on expletives to convey a sentiment or mood. She had a real talent. Sad loss.
I love I’ve seen a few couple channels talking about this movie lately. I love this movie I was too young to watch it but saw it in theaters when I was 9. I loved the twisted satirical take on the teen movie and as I’ve gotten older it has aged like fine wine. The older I got the more interesting understood the genius of the movie.
Loved it from the first time I saw it (early ‘90’s?) but don’t remember it being considered controversial. One day I’ll watch it again, maybe as a double feature with Pump Up the Volume.
the heathers series will never reach cult status bc its not a good heathers adaptation or a good story without taking that into consideration. things that develop cult followings are actually slightly decent at a baseline. heathers tv show was just shitty
I remember when this came out on VHS in Australia. I stole a copy from Blockbuster, and I still have it to this day. I've also got it on DVD. It's one of the best movies of my generation (Gen X), and am absolute cult classic. Even my youngest son loves it! ( He's 15). 🖤😈🇭🇲
Yes I have. And thanks for the comment! The bit about catcher in the rye was mentioned in one of the DVD Commentary tracks with Lehman, Di Novi and Waters.
Such a fun movie! The 70's and 80's had a lot of fantastic tv shows and movies that don't fit with today's sensibilities! I actually like Cutting Class, some cool fun kills!
I remember when I went to the local video store and asked for this and the young guy hadn’t heard of it. It felt momentous. Oddly enough I have no recollection of suicide or most of the other themes of the film 😂 I just vaguely remember it being about bullying & that it had Christian Slater - he was unbelievably hot in those days 🥵
I love this movie, I also have a feeling if the first heather didn't crash through the coffee table she probably would have service if someone had call 911 and got her help .

Love how people fake empathy to show off. It's a trait that carries into adulthood, sadly enough. Don't know why it's so common.
There is no way that this movie could be made today. This was controversial at its time, but after Columbine, there is no way.
For me it helps remind me how often shootings happened and just weren't talked about as much. All the way back to the 60's
