- This Series X isn't displaying properly and appears to have a broken HDMI port. Will I be able to replace the port without causing more damage?
Unlikely.
But, let's find out!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid rubber strap thing
Yeah I don't like rubbers either
@@samholdsworth420 Why?
Yes I had a similar problem with the stupid rubber strap too!
@@dvsr5296 because I'm allergic to them. Dermatitis 😭
@@samholdsworth420 That's not the real reason you don't like them. Lambskin exists.
This fix had it all, mystery, drama and a happy ending!!! Good man Steve!!!
😁 thanks Greg!

I hope they'll make a sequel with a new bad guy and a new plot :D
Yes special massage for my eyeballs.
Even had a rubber strap-on.
I like your videos because you break stuff almost as often as you fix it. Keep the good work.
It's just because he's bad at what he's doing
@@H.EL-Othemany I've looked everywhere, but can't find your RUclips channel with 100K+ subscribers, mate.
Thick pcb you should use your solder wick to remove the mount points first rather than try to heat the board all the way through all at once. Makes it a lot easier when you go topside
Or use the desolder gun...
@@oldguy9051 AKA "The Cow"
low melt would have helped too
Yeah but he was trying to do a quick fix. Ended up making it worse. No shortcuts next time steve.

Man!!! That soldering bypass was so hard to pull off! I was getting anxiety just by watching you have a go at it. You got my total respect for pulling that one off! Love your channel and your fixes man!
when he found the chip, I paused the video and looked up the chip. from the results, this chip flying off when doing HDMI replacements is very common!
then I went down the rabbit hole more and found it is not for sale anywhere and the only way to get one is from a donor board.
went back to the video and was super glad there is a way to bypass it. I know the PlayStation really does not like filters not being used and this could have ended poorly if it was Sony
You sir have the appropriate amount of balls! 👍 Sketcheriffic, and awesome fix.
Thanks Chris! 👍
but allways the incorrect amount of thermal paste
I saw that chip hit the deck when you pulled the port off, was hoping it was one of the caps that's only there for protection and not strictly necessary like I've seen on other vids.
Righteous hack in the end though, gratz.
At 6: 41when the nozzle touches the board , probably knocked it off
Same ESD as the ONE X's I believe but if you bypass you will only get 1080p. Love the videos my man! Keep it up.
Great Job Steve! Good save with that chip! I did a video of one of these a few weeks back, and they do require a fair amount of heat to remove the port. I would recommend using LOW MELT solder, it makes the job a little easier!
Yeah, definitely wish I had some low-melt for this job. Will be using it next time for sure! 👍
@@StezStixFix You still did a great job Steve and you got it working! They are still a real pain to do even with low melt. I don't really fancy doing another one any time soon!
@@StezStixFix You can buy 70 C melting temperature solder
I've gotten back into redoing my guitar electronics after seeing your videos, and that is challenging enough for me. The precision required for what you're doing is absolutely crazy.
This works and I almost cried after seeing my home screen show up.. Because I had one of those "Hiroshima" repairs on mine.. All 19 PADS. 3 trace wires all the way up to the encoder chip, a new encoder, and I went through 3 HDMI ports and this bypass before it fired up! Great great video!!
Tuned in for solder masking, was not disappointed. Congrats on hitting 90k, well deserved!
Another fantastic video! And I appreciate all the elements, especially the masking. When you realize just how tiny of a workspace you're really working with, it makes the repair that much more impressive.
Low melt solder makes it way much easier, great video Steve!
Sick flip on that chip Steve :) also thanks for "boring" us with the solder mask
This must be one of my favourites. Good recovery on the fix. I hear that component is needed for 4k though, so maybe if you can get a replacement there will be a follow up video??
Great repair Steve! This reminds me of when I used to do a lot of surface mount mods and rework on prototype phones. You spend literally hours working under the microscope then when you look at it with your eyes, it's so tiny, you think, how the heck did I just do that?!!... Those ESD devices are there to protect the device so it will be a tad more vulnerable now 😉
Vulnerable to what?
@@mandokir ESD, static electricity
for someone DIY ing it you do a really good job
One of my favourite videos in a while. I love when they go a bit longer. I feel like we are all here for the nitty gritty like the soldering mask. Great stuff.
What an intense roller-coaster of emotions this was. My anxiety was through the roof. Only thing calming was seeing DAVE.
Hello Steve, discovered your channel few months back and I'm having an absolute blast, thank you.
Have you considered making tutorial videos about the tools you use and how to use them? I think it'll benefit some of us knowing how to use a multimeter for example; or when and how to use a solder flux. Thx!
Low melt solder is the way to remove connecters and avoid any mess.
Low melt solder is your friend. And clean your soldering iron tip, please. What you lacked in reballing, you definitely surpassed in bodge wiring! Nice work!
you make electronic repair fun and hilarious, and your content is really helpful as well. you gained a new a loyal subscriber! Hello from Austin Tx!
So true story. Once you did the chip bypass and turned it back on, when you put the screen on it, i lost network connection, so on my screen I had the little circle thing and I thought it was on your screen so I was excited for you... then i realized that it was my network and had to wait to see that you had indeed fixed it. But talk about PERFECT timing.
Fantastic as always and the look on your face when the bypass worked was priceless. Keep up the awesome videos.
Might need some merch with that shocked it's alive expression. Maybe a mug with " it's alive shocked face" on one side and "stupid game face" on the other
6:40 You can see that IC go tata and landing on the mat. it was as you rested the board against the hot-air gun, Steve, OOPS!
best reaction to a fix ever, thats exactly what I do when something works when I had no confidence it would and am absurdly happy, just makes faces and noises of fantasticness. Well done on the repair, thats so much harder than it looks.
Thank you Steve for the awesome vide. Say hi to Dave from me. Did he enjoy the short vacation.
😁 thanks Frederick! Dave says Hi. And yes, I think he enjoyed being in a box in the shed for a week. Nice change of scenery for him! 🤣
Good to see you brought a Xbox series X and managed to fix it well done Steve 👍
Thanks Chris! 👍
Nicely done Steve 👍😎
Thanks Vince, felt good to get this one going. I hope it's a lasting fix, but time will tell. I'm keeping this for myself anyway, so I'm happy with how it turned out! If those chips become available to buy at some point, I will definitely get one👍
@@StezStixFix Yes, I'm sure it will be fine. Maybe just ground yourself before changing out the HDMI cable if you been doing the running man on thick piled carpet (don't deny it). Phil (TheCod3r) will no doubt be able to sort you out with one of those ESD chips in the future if needed 👌👍👍👍
@@Mymatevince I can indeed lol. I'll dm him and hook him up with one ;)
@@itsconsolefix Well done Phil👌👍👍👍👍
@@itsconsolefix Nice one Phil. I was going to suggest that too as I know you do lots of console repairs. I know you used to be into coding so you might like my latest video, where I had to reverse engineer some software and write a keygen to access a service menu in an inverter, as technical support were not being very helpful! I also found some Easter eggs in the program.
I've no idea how you managed to pull off this one, but great job and great video!
Thanks Adam! Yeah, I genuinely didn't think that bypass would work! 👍
You make my day , i thought it was me trying to fix something easy and making it worst by mistake and it becomes horribly hard and longer 😅
Hi Steve.. avid semi-amateur repairist here.. came by your channel flicking through repair videos and watched this one.. first one I've seen from you and.. its different.. but a good different haha I really liked it so I've subscribed :)
Nice rebound bypassing the chip you destroyed! I'm sure it had a purpose, but we will never know. Thanks again for sharing your experience! Rock on, my friend!
If I'm correct that chip is what allows 4k without it it won't display in 4k and the only way to replace it is to take one off a donor board
@@ians.4431 I am not a fan of those chips that float on solder balls. I am not even sure if I would have tried to fix it. Stezstix did a fine job getting it working. As far as 4K is concerned, I had 4 monitors die on me at a young age that were 4K. I went back to a normal 1080p monitor now and I have no issues. Thanks for the response @Ian S. !!!
low melt solder is your friend Steve. just mix the current solder with low melt and Viola easy peasy lemon squeezy
Yeah, in hindsight I wish I had some. Definitely will next time! 👍
Hey Steve, I've been watching your stuff for quite a while and you really inspired me to start this stuff myself. Thanks to your videos i managed to fix a friend's speaker, that had broke off pads on the charging port. Keep going with your amazing work!
These videos are fantastic, yeah the others may be able to solder better, and pretend to know they know what they are doing, but you're a much better presenter and entertainer. Keep up the great work.
your sense of humour is so bloody brilliant!
Absolutely love your videos. You pretend like you don't really know what you're doing, but in reality you are a repair ninja.
I have to admit i laughed so hard when you realized the chip had fallen off. Incredible recovery!
As soon as that chip dropped..... I swore for you. But daaaaamn man you pulled it back. Fantastic video mate 👍👍👍
Low melt solder is always worth a try.
I don't know how or why but I cant stop watching your videos. I have no real interest in electronics but I cant stop, You seem to be my favourite RUclipsr....
Dave need a promotion! Your fix instantly worked with him ❤
So glad I found this channel. It's important to show what can go wrong as well as right. You are doing something definitely right with your approach. Keep it up!!!
What an emotional rollercoaster, good fix! Forgetting the Gimp strap is standard practice.
Like MacGyver of electronics. "We have to replace the chip" - "I don't have any, gimme some copper wires, I rebuild it"
Come on Stez the power of Dave fixed this. Hope he has enjoyed his holiday
I think you're right! 😁
Great job sir. It still boggles me that watching this I can't grasp the sense of the small scale of the componente until a giant finger comes onscreen.
That was legendary. I knew that chip was cooked, but that hail mary bypass! That just feels so good.
Thanks Noc! Yeah, it felt really good ! Can't believe it actually worked! 👍
Great video, I believe it's a solder mask you need. These are used for repairing main boards in mobile phones and are usually on a sheet on which you would typically use a solder paste to create the solder balls with the correct spacing.
This bro did the greatest come back of all time , this fix represents me twice a day everyday haha
Good job
6:14 the solder on 99.99% of electronics nowadays is lead-free solder which needs quite high temperatures to liquefy, to more easily remove things like hdmi ports it is always a good idea to add some low melt solder or even just 63/37 solder to all the solder joints to lower the melting point.
I mean, he did. He said 'I'll put some leaded solder on here to lower the melting point.'
4:59
@@WhiteG60 sorry, must have missed that part, so let me rephrase that. Low melt solder or smd/smt removal alloy as it is also called would have been ideal in this case as it lowers the melting point even further as the alloy's own melting point is just 58ºC. its a bit expensive at $15 to $20 per 4.5Ft of the stuff, but works wonders.
@@rick5078 It's far less expensive than a seriously damaged motherboard though. It lowers melting temp far more than just regular leaded solder.
I rarely understand the use of that huge hot air thingie, and this one is no exception... It melts everything in a large area. Can't you just use solder wick and the Moo-machine? :D
Sadly not on stuff like this, it wouldn't be able to remove the solder. I had the hot air on 500 degrees, and it was still only just enough to get the port off. With an iron or desoldering gun, it would've gone nowhere!
Nice one Steve didnt think you were going to fettle this one for a while
Well done snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Brilliant video. Welcome back Dave!!
Well done you, I am so pleased that you got it working.
Congrats to the newest fix! What an amazing trip we could watch here!
Awesome video mate. The look on your face when it worked... Priceless. Love the content. Thanks for sharing 😁
Hey Steve! I love your content, you should totally try to fix faulty/broken Guitar Hero/Rock Band guitars or drum sets, there’s a LOT of them that get tossed into the trash or sold for a few bucks
You scared me, thought you weren't gonna sing for us
Amazing video
Glad Dave has been found without a ransom
Keep up the amazing work Steve
Epic recovery and patience, Nice Win. Thanks for sharing 👍
Shiver me timbers that was entertaining, great to see a real world repair and not a perfect HDMI port replacement.
Hats off for giving the bypass a try and balls or no balls I that that was a solid result.
That went from "he's got this" to "oh God" to "pray for this man" to "someone prayed for this man" in a very short period of time. Well done!
That Home Alone face was satisfying as hell. Stellar job, mate!
Great humour. You make it look effortless. Speaking of bypassing stuff. Brother going in for a heart bypass next month. Would you like to give it a go. 😳😳😳💔
Thanks Wardy! Hope your brother's op goes well, I'm sure he'll be in better hands than with old Captain Bodge here!
Well impressed that you got it working! I would have no idea what to do after that. Well done :)
pre tin the coated wire on the first end makes life easier ... it also helps to scrape off some coating with a scalpel ... less stress on the solder points
"Want to skip" - What an insult! NEVER! Song is great!
i actually cheered when that came on!!, fantastic recovery! ow and that rap was on point!
i was about to pull the trigger on that listing aswell, at least i getto see what happened to it in the end
I'm tempted to try this, but knowing my luck I would end up getting one off Ebay that was full of lard or locusts.
Love your vids man! You’ve got such a good temperament for fault finding! Very soothing watching you work
My misses had the same problem, she forgot the strap on too.great vid buddy
Lol Steve’s reaction to it working reminds me of Austin Powers and him trying not to talk about the mole 😂
I just love the reaction when it actually turned on.
One of the best channels on RUclips on your way to 100k subs steve
Great fix. Although (and you had the same sentiment hearing your outro), who in their right mind would play Crazy Taxi without The Offspring?
Totally agree! I actually went to my Dreamcast to play it because it upset me so much not having Offspring and Bad Religion! 😁
Try warming the stickers up a little with your hot air. Less damage to the stickers. When the USB & HDMI ports start getting lose on my son's xbox it's usually the metal part of the connector spreading apart like yours. If you deal with it early enough you can clamp the metal parts back together and solder it together for extra strength. It makes the ports feel new again.
I face palmed so bad on this one. Great video. Remindes me of the padre game yesterday in the second inning. Then comming back in the end to win.
Love ya work Steve.... Keep on Soldering on brother.....whats the backing track you are using for the over dub....sounds very Soulish mate...cheers
Nice work. I was always a Playstation guy myself. Ever since that Red Ring of Death debacle, I've stuck with Sony and all my consoles still work.
I love your expression when you fix things. It's awesome
Wait so you now have both a PS5 AND an Xbox X! Congrats man!
Great job. Love your videos. I guess putting it fully back together solved the issue of no beep when turning it on.
Wow this video was amazing! Keep up the great content
Well done Steve for getting it to work even though it gave you a headache 🤕 keep your videos coming sir you are a gemstone 💎 😊
Love the Van Gough painting impression when it worked
Crazy difficult work 😮 You so much deserve more than one ‚like‘ for this! ❤
Awesome fix... tricky but very successful 👏👏👏
You can see the little chip fly off 6:36 right as you pull the HDMI port off. and it's that little blurry gray blob in the background I believe.
What an awesome job Dave !
(It was great soldering skill too, Steve.)
Nice random Offspring cover at the end.
Your patreon rap got picked up by my headset and someone said it sounds like Snoop Doggy Dog. And your 360 game is a dreamcast game!
New to your channel, Earned yourself a sub. Liking the format and approach to fixing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I don't know why I like being included in a rap on a hardware repair video, but it always makes me feel happy every week.
Thank you for "boring" us with soldermasking :D Great job btw
Just found your channel a few weeks ago. Love the content, Dave & VO Steve. Any suggestions on removing hdmi that some genius hot glued in? Surprisingly there's no output to TV 😂. Keep ... Solid 😊
Think you need to invest in some low melt solder.
I thought I saw something fall off when you was applying heat.
