Actually... I have adhd and taking Adderall helps me focus on exactly what I need to do, with laser like focus. This is because my brain is deficient in dopamine and norepinephrine, an adhd medication is intended to balance that nuerochemical imbalance, leading to impulse control and focus.
Now, on the other hand, if one is NOT deficient in said neurotransmitters, it will cause the opposite because there would now be an excess of dopamine and norepinephrine. Causing inability to focus and diminishing impulse control.
You are speaking from a recreational user perspective.

    • @Gregorz
      @Gregorz 2 года назад +3

Yeah these people are saying they were "prescribed" ADHD medication, from the US perspective where you just have to say you're tired or unfocused and a doctor will throw adderall at you. Especially ones that are used like "study drugs" where they're short-acting, you just pop them.
I'm in the UK and it took me a year to get diagnosed and medicated. I was never picked up as a kid and I struggled through my whole life. That's on the low end - the norm is more like 2 years plus. It's an extremely long road. It's slow-release medication, I don't pop it throughout the day. Just once in the morning. And it's changed my life. It doesn't give me "euphoria" it just reduces my executive dysfunction, allows me to get work done and stops my disability.
These abusers give people with actual ADHD a bad name.

Thank you for videos like these. I took adderall for about a decade and throughout that process I’ve been lowering my dose progressively. I had like zero side effects other than appetite suppression and probably mild insomnia. I’m currently taking a gap year before med school and trying to figure out if I can make it through without adderall, and videos like these are always helpful. This scares the crap out of me. She talked me about how they used to prescribe benzos often until they knew the long term effects. The only long term effects talked about online are when there is severe abuse. With meds, I believe that there is always a price to pay for the benefit you are getting. @@DrJayFeldman we are doing more listening, and less talking. Screen time on all devices has been minimized. Family board games slashcard playing has increased. Granddaughter likes that and she is good! There is a lot more outdoor time, especially during the afternoon and evenings now that the days are longer. Trying to incorporate regular exercise at the gym/swimming/hiking, etc. Meditation is a regular for me. Granddaughter and other family members don’t quite take to that! Smile.. however, she is doing more reading about it and once in a while, declares that she’s going to start a practice. She does something simple, like 2-5 minutes of sitting quietly and watching/counting the breaths. We have add spontaneous moments of silence where are the family is just sitting at the kitchen table. There is a profundity and those 32nd Dashone minute pauses that have brought a wow from granddaughter. Healthier, eating, nutritional, focus, supplements, etc. Granddaughter likes to read. I’ve encouraged her to do her own research on this disorder and share with us her thoughts. Explosive episodes are difficult to handle but as I look back, I can see that they usually come and the late afternoon/evenings. This seems to take place on or off medication so it’s hard to say. We’re also trying different parenting approaches. Trying to get ahead of it and notice the triggers before an explosion happens. So, I keep reading, watching videos, trying to understand. And, I hold onto the serenity prayer. Smile.

You say adderall impairs memory, although this is only for people without ADHD. Also I couldn't work out which study you were specifically referring to in the description, none of them referred to memory.
I also disagree with alertness being the benefit of adderall. This is the benefit for all takers of adderall, ADHD or not. Alertness by itself is a cognitive enhancer, hence why people without ADHD may have positive effects on adderall. It's use for people with ADHD as it increases that tonic dopamine level which improves executive functions, without ADHD this higher tonic dopamine will result in anxiety and many other adverse effects.
I agree that adderall, or amphetamine usage has crappy long term usage research. Although the drug has existed for quite a while, and nothing too extreme has been discovered yet.
Also totally agree with having low dose. People go way overbaord, sometimes chasing the euphoric effect that eventually runs out. Low dose is always best.

What would you say is a low dose and what is to high of a dose?

    • @vitulus_
      @vitulus_ 2 года назад +2

@@Nvrwdntlso Well depends on the specific ADHD medication. There's no real specific numbers as how the drug is used is different to each person. Although, generally people need to focus on the minimum effective dose, generally this can be worked out by increasing from a low dose and with good understanding of what the goal of the drug is. For example, some people with ADHD may believe that because they still don't like doing tedious tasks, its not working. But obviously that's not what the drugs do, and chasing this effect would result in a high dose.
Generally as a user of these drugs, always keep in mind that you would rather the lowest dose that is useful to you.

What if someone has prior addiction issues? What if they are taking stimulants like caffeine all day with Adderall?
My brother has been on Adderall for a couple years, drinks a ton of energy drinks, smokes weed and now he thinks he's being followed everywhere. He thinks there are hundreds of people in on it. No one is doing anything that I've seen. He thinks his neighbors are in on it and it could be a military operation. I know, it's crazy. He has had major prior addiction issues in the past with alcohol and pain pills. He's never acted like this before, so I'm wondering if it's the Adderall with major caffeine use?

It's important to be aware of the potential side effects of combining Adderall with stimulants. It's possible that your brother's behavior could be due to the interaction between the two. If he does get off of it and he still is experiencing these thoughts, then I'll try and get him to talk to a professional. The issue is that he truly believes this is happening and doesn't think it's in his head at all. I don't know if I could convince him to get help. I also don't know how he's getting the Adderall. I don't want to ruin his job and his livelihood by getting him committed. I guess one step at a time and see what happens.

Especially with him proving over 11 years that he stopped smoking weed proved a lot… he used to take way more and over dose with adderal. Now he’s just taking 20mg a day… personally he’s such a good person without it and does everything right… I just don’t like the mood swings and the loss of emotion and feelings with it.. just makes me sad because that wasn’t the person I loved…

Thanks for sharing this. I have just recently started taking Vyvanse. I'm having a hard time weighing the benefits of this drug. I feel like it does a lot of good for me but, I think it's giving me blood pressure problems, sore back and neck muscles, and dehydrating my body. But it also seems to be helping with getting work done, and not hating my job, as well as unexpected things like managing addictive behaviors. My wife thinks I'm doing better as a person on the drug, but I am worried about the long term consequences because of the negative side effects I am already seeing.
My therapist said the fact that I'm not euphoric on the drug means I defiantly have ADHD, but though they may be helping me now, I think I would rather not have them if it lead to having a stroke, early dementia, or heart disease. Or who knows what else.
I'm certainly going to bring up these concerns with my health professionals.

I think there should be a disclaimer at the start of the video not just at the end of the comments section. Dr Jay is an Osteopath not a therapist or an internist. His review of the drugs in this video are his opinion and his experience. His experience will not be everyone's experience. He may well have been misdiagnosed and should not have been on that medication or it wasn't the right medication for him.
For thorough in depth information on ADHD if you haven't come across it already it a channel "How To ADHD".

Osteopaths receive practically the same training as allopaths (MD’s) in the US. The channel you cited is not even run by a medical doctor but rather by some someone in their mid 20’s with no medical experience.
Doctor Jay is just as qualified as an internist, but probably not as much as a psychiatrist who deals directly with ADHD patients. Therapists don’t prescribe Adderall or go to medical school.
Why not make a case for his arguments rather than his title? Whether or not he’s “qualified” doesn’t help answer the hard problem of speculating about the long term effects of Adderall.

It does have similar effects to CNS stimulants such as cocaine. Obviously, the MOA/routes differ but to the layperson, this should be emphasized.
There is no denial the medication helps in ADHD symptoms. This video brings up a valid concern of many physicians - that the long term effects are not understood.
Long-term Adderall use has not really been studied yet - would you put someone on this medication (vs. something like atomoxetine or XR methylphenidate) if it was known to significantly increase incidence of A-Fib?

The video isn’t terrible at all. It’s 100% accurate. It’s similar to cocaine in terms of the dopamine hit and mechanism of action in the CNS. Furthermore it’s literally meth. The exact same chemical as METH. Maybe you should be more informed.

Go and look at the molecular structure of these drugs and you’ll see they are different no matter which way you try to look at it.

I would never abuse the drug but I do take it daily to help me staying focused at my job. I have zero attention span if I don't take it. Does this apply to people who have diagnosed ADHD? I was put on adderall around the age of 10 And I took it all the way till about the age of of my parents insurance. And that's when I had to start paying out of pocket and I started to realize how hard life was for me when I didn't have my admiral and it terrified me that one day there might be a shortage or something and I would be screwed. And being so dependent on amphetamines really made me angry and I just stopped taking it and genuinely took about a decade for my brain to start to become normal again. Adderall messed me up so bad I was worthless without it. Prescribing young people, this stuff should be a crime. You're literally creating drug addicts. What doctor would prescribe a child amphetamines to take regularly through their developmental years? What do you think happens to a developing child's brain on pharmaceutical? Grade myth when they take it for over a decade every single day..... They become dependent on it, that's what happens. And whatever your problem was that, admir? Al is trying to treat becomes 100 times worse. Because adderall doesn't fix the problem, it just masks it, and instead of working on the problem, you ignore it, and it gets way worse and if you ever stop taking out a roll, it all comes crashing down..... And when I say it took me a decade to get back to normal. I'm not even being dramatic. I literally struggled struggled to get out of bed and some days. I would stay in bed for like, 3 days at a time and if it wasn't for my amazing family and being fortunate enough to have a lot of money, I would not have been able to take that decade of time to work on healing my mind.. Thankfully now I am drug-free completely. No prescriptions of any sort and I actually have motivation again. And I'm actually feeling joy again and positive emotions..... Is adderall completely fried my brain. If you wouldn't suggest that children start doing meth then they shouldn't be doing adderal. Amphetamines are literally bad for developing brains and I do not understand how doctors are okay giving this crap to kids. Yeah, the kids might struggle to focus, but that's o k, their kids. It's OK for kids to be energetic and bouncing off the walls. We don't have to drug them up just because adults are lazy.😑

It's understandable to be concerned about the long-term effects of taking medication like Adderall. At the same time, it's important to personalize the decision to take medication or not and consider the individual's needs and circumstances. Do you have any tips for parents who may be considering Adderall for their children?

I wouldn't even try it at ur age cause it might have too many effects on the heart but from my unprofessional guess or opinion you should NEVER take more then 10-15mg if for some reason you needed it. That was enough for me at the age of 22-23. But yea I honestly wouldn't even try it nor think about it at ur age. I have a stationary bike at home that I use for small workouts to give me energy. That might work good for you or maybe some sort of swimming. I don't think anyone should or would need Adderall past the age of 50 but hey I can be wrong since I'm not a professional. Thank doctor for this great video!
Personally, I have never been on any ADHD medication in my life nor have I been officially diagnosed with ADHD but I do show a lot of ADHD symptoms and in a severe manner.
I survived 3 years in Medical School only to get kicked out at the end due to being late on everything, low grades (due to cramming before an exam night due to low interests)
I have changed jobs and degrees sooooo many times, and I wish I could put a stop to all this... this caused me bad anxiety and insomnia.
I hate medication.. I hate anything non-natural that can alter with my body and I do think of long term problems first before anything else, but I feel like I should go for medication if I get offered it because my life is a wreck. ( im 24 ). What do you think doctor? I honestly don't know what to do.. but I have an appointment with an ADHD specialised Psychologist and a T.O.V.A test to make sure I have it before persueing with anything else.

Well I have adhd too but I do not take them regularly. I can definitely recommend them, but to make it short the longer u take the worse it gets. I also can't speak for adderall bc I'm from Germany and they don't sell it here. But from what I can say is go to doc ask him for medication and actually try different ones. My way to go is attentin it works fast not to long so I can sleep good at night and I take a normal amount of around 5-10mg. Other ones just didn't work properly or had some annoying side effects which lowered the efficiency of the medication. If u decide to use them, use them wisely sounds dumb is important daily use minors the effect (for me). Once a week or on hard days but don't use ADHD as an excuse bc then u lose. Hope I could help

I'm all for nuanced views on Adderall, but you lost me when you said it only increases alertness instead of focus... Although some ADHD people say Adderall makes them sleepy (something I'm still skeptical of tbh), it raises BOTH alertness and focus.
HOWEVER, the tricky thing about the focus is that you might zone in on something unproductive. If you are doing a task for one hour, or perhaps three hours straight, you are focused, but it might not be the thing you should be doing. So I would instead claim that Adderall does not force productivity.
