    Motherwort Stripping: Basic Technique for Making Potent Remedies
    In this video lesson I share with you how to make potent herbal food and medicine. I use motherwort flowering tops as the plant example-such a worthy herbal ally for calming, with affinities for the heart and womb.
    The first step in processing herbs is to strip them; to remove their main stem, since it's mostly cellulose and lacks the flavor, aroma, nutrients, etc. of the flower or leaf.
    This pertains to harvesting and processing aerial plant parts that grow on strong central stems. This is especially important when making fresh plant tinctures or herbal infused oils, but it also pertains to herbal teas and culinary herbs.
    Here is to making potent food and medicine!
    PS IF YOU LIKE FORAGING & would like to jump into some medicine-making too, I invite you to check out my course 🌱Wild Food Health Boosters & Herbal Remedies🌿

    I use those woody stems to make reed pens for ink drawings. I dry, cut and sharpen them dip them in ink.

      The woody stem would be cool to make baskets. I'm about to harvest my 2nd motherwort plant out of the 6 I have. Do you leave the roots for next year's patch? I figured it would come back larger year after year I have a row at the end of the garden. Love your videos ❤

    I think bitter edibles/medicines are underrated in their bitterness.
    Especially with someone like motherwort. IMO its good to know that what youre working with needs to be treated respectfully
    And I think thats common sense for people who forage, but not necessarily for the consumer.
    Also, i like jars and dont like having alcohol around

    Off the subject, I want to know where you are buying those flowing, cool linens worn?
    Thank you for the medicinal herb informational videos shared.
    My motherwort didn't get a good start and is tiny. No harvesting it this year.

    • @DinaFalconi

      Thank you for asking. I am a linen hound and find them / receive them from friends, at clothing exchanges, thrift stores and also when on sale at the "Flax" brand website.
      It may be too late, but if you put compost and mulch around your motherwort plant, and consistently water it, it might grow up and out.

    I absolutely love your voice and appreciate your knowledge immensely. I hope to be taking your course soon when I'm not so busy with gardening, harvesting, drying, preserving, cooking and making herbal tinctures. I have been so busy and many crops went to waste like cherry blossoms, grape leaves, garlic mustard, etc.. because I was unaware of their benefits and uses. I still have time to use the Japanese knotweed for food and tincture and grape leaves for cooking which I will probably water bath til I have time to make stuffed grape leaves. I moved to a property this year that had dozens of herbs including comfrey, greater celandine, dock, motherwort, stinging nettle, raspberry leaf, rosehip, tart cherry trees, grapes and the others I mentioned above and so much more. I feel so blessed and cared for by my creator. I never want to leave here I love it!

    I've been trying to find out why you have to wait for them to flower first before harvesting and haven't been able to find anything on that. I've got some spring motherwort finally growing in the garden and I'd love to make a infusion for some anxiety. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🫶

    • @DinaFalconi
      @DinaFalconi  3 месяца назад +2

      Thanks, the flowering tops (leaf and flowers) hold the strongest medicine (that is what I was taught), but you could certainly experiment with spring leaves too. I also recall some herbalist using the seeds.

      Hello Hedgerow, I only tincture it fresh, but if you have dried motherwort that still has it's potency, then tincturing with dried would be fine.

    Hi Dina, I made a motherwort tincture. Instead of alcohol, I used 99.9% Propylene Glycol. I’m now wondering if I should’ve used something else. Is it safe? Thank you!

    • @DinaFalconi
      @DinaFalconi  2 года назад

      Hello Faith, I don't have any experience using propylene glycol, but doesn't sound too good.... I suggest learning / researching it thoroughly before consuming. My initial response: "don't consume".

    Can you make a tea with motherwort? If yes, what parts? I haven't graduated yet to making tinctures.

    • @DinaFalconi
      @DinaFalconi  Год назад +2

      Kim, you can make tea with mother wort, and you would use the same parts as you make the tincture with: leaf and flowering tops. Still, keep in mind that the herb is very bitter and hard for many to drink as tea.
