Hello Mr. Hartford, I also have a tax problem, according to the IRS I owe $1050.00, well I don’t have a nickel right now. Besides, they want me to write a letter explaining how I expended over $4000.00 in books. Unfortunately, that’s the year the Hurricane hit FL., I have a lot of damages including boxes and boxes of very expensive books as well as receipts. Now they want an itemized list and prices of all my books. I used to keep copies of receipts on my lap top, but it also got damaged. I received $1015.00 and my husband $398.00., a month from social security. Also in 2016 right before the hurricane, I withdrew the last $7500.00., from my 403b. I had todo it because my house is a mess, the pluming is leaking in different places. The Insurance denied my claim, so I have been paying for house repairs out of pocket. So I packed the money and our medications and took them to the shelter; well, I don’t know how or when someone took the bag. When I realized it was missing, I went to several police or army officers and reported. Nick Joslin Well, that’s what drugs do, offer relief to all sorts of stress problems. Then it gets where you really get addicted to the drug itself. Then you have more problems.....on and on and on, until you’ve had enough and tackle the main problem head on. People don’t understand why drugs are such a problem , I was there for most of my life. Until I had enough.
I watched this to feel better about my finances, but now I’m just terribly sorry for this man. I really hope he’s gotten treatment and was able to find good legal help. Dave, do you realize that there is a vast number of folks how haven't filed tax returns in over a decade? The IRS hardly ever enforces any criminal sanction.
I hope this guy is doing way better after 2 yrs from this call. He reached out, so that's a huge step to bettering himself, now is the next thing, getting the help.
Every time I go to a casino to play poker I find it depressing because of all the people mindlessly hitting the buttons on the slot machines. I've never understood the appeal of sitting at a machine and having it take between 4% and 11% of EACH wager.
I came here for info on WHAT to do about not filing. On my own. I NEVER owed taxes and received refunds, so it's my loss. BUT, I am glad they helped this man.
I remember playing slots in Vegas and thinking to myself after 20 min that I was so incredibly bored. It’s so interesting to me how people can be so different
And CT just approved ANOTHER casino to be built about 15 minutes from where he lives... best for him to sell everything, take his pension and get out of this God forsaken state like everyone else is.
Paying income tax isn't even in the constitution, there's only supposed to be tax on sold goods and that's it. Income tax is govt intervention at its best...
You should read the actual constitution instead of listening to the nutjobs. The 16th amendment of the constitution clearly states that the government can tax income. "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."
That amendment was passed in 1913, the same year that a privately run bank disguised as a federal agency hijacked he nation's money supply and replaced our gold with worthless paper. Stealing (ie: taxing our income) was just the nail in the coffin for letting citizen's control their own wealth.
he's still gambling. I guarantee it. My mother has this addiction for 25 years. Its so bad she took out a reverse mortgage this year. That house was my inheritance.
When I came to terms with my addict behviour it made sense why I am always struggling. I would just disassociate most of my early adult hood. When you tune out you just lie tp yourself that it will all work out with out any fire to take action. Now I am aware what I doing I feel like I can start somewhere
As a previous worker in the gaming industry, I have seen many decent people gamble their life savings and homes into video poker machines. It is an absolute addiction you will need help with. I cannot understand it myself but would not belittle one for it. My biggest piece of advice is find help and move somewhere this is not possible. Remove all temptation.

Most casinos hold out the estimated taxes before they payout, so he may not owe as much as he thinks, which is probably why the IRS hasn't been bugging him. If I was him I would get a copies of tax software on e-bay and get them filed. I got about 5 years behind on my taxes. I found that making myself sit there for days and get them together and do them myself and figure them out was an important part of the learning to "NEVER DO THIS AGAIN" process. I had to switch jobs and cash out part of my 401K to pay them all, but I got them paid and moved forward.

Great call Dave. The issue is not simply stopping the behavior, it is getting healing for the cause that started the behavior (self medication) - I know because I have worked with addictions in other areas. Without getting healing for the underlying causes the behavior will return, over and over again. I know, I have been there. By the grace of God (literally) I am free now, but there were many times … (too many to count).

As a former addict. Do not underestimate spiritual help.
I can tell the man really appreciated Dave not "kicking the man while he's down." I can really respect that about him, especially since I would not be able to bring a similar point as eloquently nor as kindly.
95 thousand in pension!
Holy cow.
People are attracted to the slot machines because they offer an escape.
Exactly just like movies, tv, books... the list goes on
Nick Joslin
Well, that’s what drugs do, offer relief to all sorts of stress problems. Then it gets where you really get addicted to the drug itself. Then you have more problems.....on and on and on, until you’ve had enough and tackle the main problem head on. People don’t understand why drugs are such a problem , I was there for most of my life. Until I had enough.
@@mogetit5999 those are called passions, addictions arent much different, and the only big difference is that addictions have negative effects.

I watched this to feel better about my finances, but now I’m just terribly sorry for this man. I really hope he’s gotten treatment and was able to find good legal help. IRS tax laws shouldn’t be to go after people struggling though an addiction. I really hope he found some friends. Wishing him much luck
Caller: "Hi I haven't paid my taxes and I'm worried that I might goto jail"
Dave: "Ok cool"
Dave, do you realize that there is a vast number of folks how haven't filed tax returns in over a decade? The IRS hardly ever enforces any criminal sanction.
True
I hope this guy is doing way better after 2 yrs from this call. He reached out, so that's a huge step to bettering himself, now is the next thing, getting the help.
In UK casino and gambling winnings are tax free so do not need be filed
same in Canada
Every time I go to a casino to play poker I find it depressing because of all the people mindlessly hitting the buttons on the slot machines. I've never understood the appeal of sitting at a machine and having it take between 4% and 11% of EACH wager.
But it goes blinky-winky, and boiing-da-zoings!
i went once and lost $20. I don't understand how it's addictive
I could never do what Dave does, he does so much better with the callers than I could do
Dave surprised me with showing this man so much kindness.
This was over 3 years ago, I hope he's doing better now. 💞💞
well done Dave. Compassion and wise advice.
This kinda helped me notice my addiction, I'd probably say this is my favorite episode
I’m retired
I’m single
I’m the same as this guy.
But I go to church and
Love every human being
Never gambled don’t drink.
Sweet Jesus
I never file for taxes in my life , I’m 22 years old ! I never knew how taxes work
I came here for info on WHAT to do about not filing. On my own. I NEVER owed taxes and received refunds, so it's my loss. BUT, I am glad they helped this man.
I remember playing slots in Vegas and thinking to myself after 20 min that I was so incredibly bored. It’s so interesting to me how people can be so different
People make mistakes. He sounds remorseful and genuinely sorry. I hope he’s all sorted and on his way to put it in the past.
And CT just approved ANOTHER casino to be built about 15 minutes from where he lives... best for him to sell everything, take his pension and get out of this God forsaken state like everyone else is.
Yep
Filing Taxes is “Voluntary” it’s Not Law!
Now imagine being in this situation and not having that pension.
Caring and compassionate 🙏🏾❤️ I loved this!

Love Dave Ramsey!!! Helps out so many people
Paying income tax isn't even in the constitution, there's only supposed to be tax on sold goods and that's it. Income tax is govt intervention at its best...
Iqbal Saini then stop paying and see what happens to you.
Amendments to the Constitution are part of the Constitution. You don't have to like it.
A true American there
This was a year ago. Would love to hear where he is now
he's still gambling. I guarantee it. My mother has this addiction for 25 years. Its so bad she took out a reverse mortgage this year. That house was my inheritance.
Hes in jail

Won mega millions lottery
I've always found gambling addiction peculiar. I mean, throwing money away isn't fun or satisfying in anyway.
But winning large amounts is ;)
The thrill is thinking you might win. Before you know you lost.
When I came to terms with my addict behviour it made sense why I am always struggling. I would just disassociate most of my early adult hood. When you tune out you just lie tp yourself that it will all work out with out any fire to take action. Now I am aware what I doing I feel like I can start somewhere
File the forms! You can negotiate a payment plan later, but file the forms, because as Dave has said...that is the part that is illegal.
One of the more genuine calls here, I actually feel bad for the guy and usually don’t feel bad for gamblers.
That was a huge first step my man
I feel this because I’m going through the same thing gambling hit me hard and I just didn’t file this year
This type of phone call here is why I love Dave ramsey.

Marie Myers Such a cop out. Nothing more certain than death and taxes.
@@lauraz2896
Both can arrive on our doorstep unannounced and inflict pain, however death is a law of nature and consequently a divine law; taxes (specifically income taxes) is nothing more than the government infringing on our income; a scheme devised by corrupt politicians.
Marie Myers Explain to me how a community runs without taxes.
@@lauraz2896 We already pay oodles and oodles of taxes (see below). The common argument is 'how do we pay for our infrastructure, our roads, our military, etc? See below and the list is not exhaustive, I'm sure that I may have overlooked something. Our government mismanages (and give themselves exceptional salaries, pay raises, benefits and perks for literally doing nothing but constantly taking a 'recess') the revenue that they already receive. The income tax simply gives them MORE of our funds to mismanage😩. It's a disgrace AND extortion on the American people.

I hope he finds the help that he so desperately needs. Wish that for all of us...
This was a nice video. Dave had compassion which is nice to hear contrast to his typical rants. I laughed though when the caller clarified that he uses the "high-dollar" slots. He didn't want anyone thinking he was putting pennies in a machine all night. Hilarious! Good call though!
This was an awesome exchange! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I may not care for some of the financial advice Dave Ramsay has to offer, but he is a good person. This I can tell. Does he live his life as he preaches. That's up for you all to discern. But he is a GOOD PERSON. Good heart forsure
Absolutely no law that requires the average person to pay a tax on their wage compensation.
This will be a massive problem in our future. Most people aren't getting a pension anymore and some aren't applying a set amount to a 401K.
"Sell the car--you don't need it.".
--Dave Ramsey.
I had to switch jobs and cash out part of my 401K to pay them all, but I got them paid and moved forward.
not in Las Vegas or all of Nevada..the policy is "let the IRS do their withholding maneuvers on their own"......he walked with a manilla envelope with 200k inside!
why isn't the title called "gambling problem "
taxes are a gambling problem. You give the government money for the chance they will actually use it to help you.
Yea I was judging and he said gambling addiction and I was like ohh no. I feel bad for him.
SupremeVision because you gotta pay serious taxes on gambling winnings...and he’s not.
Dave can't help with gambling, but he can help with the irs debt.
Addicting to losing money. Something I’ll never understand.
My brother told me he considers himself a “gambler” like it’s a cool term. I looked at him sideways. You might as well tell me “I’m someone who loses money on purpose”
i love dave's pic in the thumbnail lol
Gambling is such a serious addiction and one that can easily be hidden. I do hope he's free of this addiction.
If you paid taxes cause it came out of your check directly then how could the government get you in trouble for not paying taxes?
Everyone has to file taxes. That’s how it goes
He didn’t pay taxes on gambling winnings. Whether or not you owe money you are required to file. In his case, he would also owe money.
Maybe he went exempt if that’s possible.
Damien Alexander don’t pay your taxes for a few years then let me know how that goes for you with the IRS. Lol
I own a business and I have to file taxes every month , I have 70 people working for me and we’ve been in business for over 29 years

And is she even relevant anymore? I know I don't trust her words after watching the stories on the shady stuff she has done.
