      Most of them don’t ever really go anywhere.
      Cool idea and they peak very quickly because people want to do things to save the planet but don’t actually continue on with using it because it’s not the best and the business itself is not very sustainable. And once customers flake off business dwindles.

    this might just be my favorite episode yet, the product isnt some weird bio-techbro idea, the inventor isnt constantly talking about trying to get rich, and honestly seems like a nice person and there isnt some vague proprietary chemical or tech we're not allowed to know the name of like so often on this channel

      It's quite a nice idea tbf. Also, I do wonder if this is truly better than burning wood. I imagine it's better than burning coal at least
      Still, it's good to at least think how can we reuse it. Perhaps if an independent study is done, they could get their results. Either way, it's marketable
      - An alternative to wood as a byproduct of the cider industry, and therefore not growing trees just to chop them down
      - Or if this turns out that it's worse than burning wood, then perhaps they could be just used as compost, in fertiliser

      Agreed, a lot of the people featured on this series just say that it's some magical Chemical X, and won't actually go into how it's made. Jose seems like he's actually okay with people taking his idea, which is really cool. He cares less about the money, and more just making a good product and leaving a mark on the world. Plus, he just seems like a really cool guy. Good humored, laid back, praises his wife on camera, he just seems like a genuinely nice guy.

    This man is a pioneer. Hopefully when (not if) someone buys him out, they give him a genuinely fair compensation for his innovation, his R&D and the hours of work he and his wife have put into this.

      thats highly unlikely. there is probably some dude in the US that watched this and is about to start doing the same thing, and there is nothing wrong with that, because its not like its anything proprietary. something like a concrete truck could dispense it in a line, and then there already exists plenty of cutting devices to divide it up.

      It's hardly an invention people have literally done this for thousands of years in places where trees aren't abundant. It's just that it typically requires either too much energy or work to be a viable alternative to wood when its available. And there are other decent uses for these leftovers, namely animal feed.

      @@vueport99 I work in the beer production industry and we also have a lot of leftover spent grain "waste" and I don't know a single brewery that just ships it off to a landfill. It's simpler cheaper and easyer to have anyone who wants it come and take it off your hands and there's always someone who could use it typically local farmers.

      In the uk we have something similar called coffee logs. It’s made from spent coffee grounds. It’s just as effective as wood if not better for wood burners. Not so good for open fires and BBQs.

      IDK if it will still smell fruity because with all that time in the sun, I'm guessing some kind of fermentation will have happened. Or maybe it is stopped by some processes while making the cider? IDK. But yeah, it really will save a lot of trees. There's also one guy who made charcoal bricks (for cooking, firewood) out of coconut shells as an alternative to chopping down trees which decreased the possibility of a landslide happening.

    In Italy we produce a lot of oil, and with the olive's bones people used to make a similar solution since wood was too expensive. I'm so happy to see it's doable in different and ecological ways👏👏👏

      Ohh, they can probably biochar all of those olive pits and sell it right back to the famers.
      The heat produced to make the biochar could produce electricity for the Olive oil makers.

    I'm glad the video included the cider mill manager pointing out that while pomace is the waste product of cider making, pomace is not garbage and is used for compost and making cider. I imagine it also would make an acceptable animal feed, or as an addition to standard feed. Turning pomace into combustible logs is an ingenious innovation, and yet another application for what is a useful raw material.

      It is a good animal feed but has to be used in small quantities and mixed w/ regular feed because it ferments and cows get drunk or have digestive problems

    An inventor, a farmer and an awesome person. I hope his business grows!
    It makes sense since apples and pears are full of fibers, kind of like bark, so it burns. This would definitely be useful instead of chopping down trees which take YEARS to grow, while people end up with fruit waste all the time!

      anything can be burned and used as fuel.
      the reason most things arent is because they dont have much energy in the first place. wood and coal is used as fuel is because they have a lot of energy that can be used.
      this? i dont know. might work. however most of the wood that is used in the world helps the forest than anything else. the actual problem is the expansion of old styles of cattle farms.

      The problem with deforestation is that they cut everything down. That biomass is what keeps he soil from erosion and washing downhill and into the waterways, causing them to silt up. We waste 80% of the trees that are harvested and never replant to replace them. We must plant more than we harvest if it is to be sustainable.

    They can use the fruit pulp to produce biogas by feeding it in a biogas digester. The materials after extracting the biogas can be used as fertilizer.

      That needs machinery. Because Biogas consists of Methane, Carbon dioxide, Hydrogen Sulphide and Ammonia. What we need is methane, which is in demand.

    Might want to try screened frames that can be elevated slightly to improve airflow and speed the drying process. Also, that must smell wonderful when burned, and likely adds a nice flavor to the food.

    This is so cool I worked for a company producing apple cider and the company was paying $$$$ to dump all their pulp straight into a landfill if I had the land to do this at the time I totally would have!

    This is so dope! I usually tend to steer away from videos where the subject revolves around any type of sludge but I was so fascinated how the genius of man is able to make lemonade out of lemons better yet charcoal out of apple sludge, by accident at that. Go Argentina!!!!

There are laws all over the world today protecting the environment because there are people out there who care about the only inhabitable planet we have. The term 'tree huggers is really an idiotic term'. With all the carbon that we release into the air today, we need trees to absorb the carbon, If we continue to deforest without any restrictions we can say goodbye to our very existence. So people plant a tree.

    I like this idea, other that replacing firewood for the simple fact that if you periodically clean up forests local to you, it can prevent excessive wildfire and make room for new growth. Firewood + this fruit log method would be a perfect balance in my opinion.

    He should experiment with slopes of different degrees. Because the consistency is always about the same, the right slope could evenly spread out the sludge without any need of extra work. It would also make the process faster because for 1) the water gets drained quicker, and 2) if pointed south it has a more perpendicular position towards the sun

      What about dumping the pomace onto conical frames? They could be built very cheap, and it would increase the sunlit area and ventilation, providing better drying

    My first reaction is that they can make compost out of it. But maybe making it into logs would be more profitable? If you BBQ those apple/pear logs, the meat may taste really nice?

      No it taste simular to wood all the flavour of apple is gone with juice . If you do not tell peole you use it for BBQ nobody would taste a difference.

      making logs is faster than composting. he needs a good press to get most of the water out , it will speed up production a lot.
      If he really wants to take this further, using machines is the only way.
      and he could probably use a farmer's sludge tank behind the tractor to move it from the factory to the farm..

    The title reminded me of what my physics teacher used to say; "everything can burn, the difference is at what temperature"...
    Water needs a whole lot of temperature, so it's more practical to let it evaporate and let things get dry.
    And before someone says that metal doesn't burn, I would recommend looking into magnesium and thermite powder... There's no doubt it ignites easier than water... and once the fire has started, it's a real challenge to extinguish it.

    excellent innovation! In America we have these similar things called “fireststarters” or fire helpers that are meant for modern type of fireplaces but which do not have a natgas line built in. They are made out of wood pulp trash, I think, and smell like musty paper and pine trees! I use them every winter. What a great idea to now also make them out of pomace fruit byproducts!

    The pomace can also be used to feed worms (which produce awesome fertilizer) or turned into Biochar and returned to the soil.

      thats about the best use for it that ive seen here so far. most of these idiots dont realize apple, and other stone fruits seeds and pits contain cyanide. Its not a good idea to cook off of it or use it indoors im sure....

    This organic matter would be great to fight against desertification. You can just dump it on the desert or half desert soil and it will turn into a bush forest, theoretically. I saw one video about how orange peel turned a desert into a nice bushland. Many deserts are deserts not because of low rain, but because of poor soil which can't hold the water when it rains. Organic matter in huge amounts could help transform this soil.

      The Biot method might make him money but the amount of trees saved doesnt even nearly equates to the CO2 produced when burned.. Rather then used it on compose as fertiliser to help plants grow..

    Though it is sad to see that, in a world where millions starve to death, fruit is discarded just because they're not up to the standards of the privileged people who can actually afford to buy them.

    If you took that product, threw it into an airtight retort chamber that can get up to 400 degrees, you could get biogas that could run a generator and produce electricity, bio-crude to make liquid fuel, and charcoal.
    Why not get 2 more products out of the stuff you're going to burn anyways?

      they old... maybe not have skill/knowledge to start electricity bussiness or other dangerous stuff. their solution suit them. I mean hidrolic press will make this bio log process alot of faster, 1 day instead week drying up. still they choose more manual labor. + marketing issue, they have 100 metric tons because a contract

    Definitely a work in progress. Very labor intensive as is and probably couldn’t be sold globally unless in were processed and dried CLEANLY indoors away from pests and contaminants.

    Maybe pressing out the water to a certain amount before sundrying it...maybe using its own mass to safe power (some sort of huge coffee filter)
    Or just press the hell out of it in the first place so it becomes solid imediatly (maybe with some natural burnable binder) PS . my father presses sawdust into woodbricks in his carpentery ...no glew whatsoever ..they burn much longer than dust of course (and don't explode😉) and safe huge amounts of space (maybe add some solar panels if considering that)

    I’m always happy to see waste reduction. It’s also thrown into use as animal feed. Yeah it could be compressed and dried and used for fuel. Use it how your local needs dictate.

    Would it speed up the drying process by using asphalt or concrete? Curious and maybe a dark color to help absorb more? Can mirrors help also?

    👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! I guess this ingenious man's product Biot would be a top seller in North America respectively where Barbecue meat is smoked. The best wood for smoking meat is from apple or cherry trees (gives the best flavour).

    This stuff would be PERFECT for BBQ. Add to that he's working on other ways to use the waste on top of the already available uses the brewery guy mentioned, this is some great news. Even for someone making ciders at home you could use your own waste for smaller examples like the vinegar or even just smaller logs for smoking meats. Lots of possibilities with this.

    I remember when they did a story on this in Kenya. The villagers made fire logs from scrap papers to power the community. Wonder if they sold excess yield to neighboring villages. 💭

      As someone else suggested, coconut dust from coconut shells may help. This would also make sure no trees are cut down

    If you mix this apple sludge with saw mill dust, or coconut husk, it will immediately take harder form. Alternatively you can also mix cow dung ( has been used for millennia in subcontinent ) but I know not every one will agree to it.

      Yah, thd dung might be better for outdoor furnaces, but for cooking, he should absolutely look into coconut husk. If there are any food facilities that use coconut there he can pull the shells and use a similar form to that guy in Africa making charcoal briquettes

      Us Indians use dried up cow dung for food too. A lot of the times the tandoor ovens that are used to make tikkas and tandoori chicken etc are fired with a mix of dried dung cakes, wood and charcoal

    Fantastic way to use the WHOLE fruit and not toss out a ton. Of the fruit that would've otherwise been tossed due to being "imperfect", it's turned into juice, and the pulp used as a replacement for firewood. Nice!

    As an idea for potentially speeding up drying and thereby increase production, why not use a biót log fire to dry the pomace? I don’t know how much of an effect it would have, but if a certain amount of biót can dry more than twice the amount of pomace to replace it then it would speed up production.

    They said the fruit logs burn similar amounts of carbon as wood and some people might take that as a reason not to switch but you need to consider how many trees are being saved from being cut down and we all know the importance trees play in keeping the atmosphere in balance

    I feel like the missing ingredient is pressure. an automated process could enable the slurry to be pumped into a mould then put under immense pressure to squeeze out the excess water and form a brick.

      I'd imagine it would work similar to Coco coir that reconstitutes into fine granules when given water. I'd say it's more of a compacted compost or manure since apple pulp is more readily broken down than coir.

      Apple waste have many ferrum III(ferrum oxide), in this form it not good for assimilation.

      @@plur_ndbn Can it be mixed with a few things like ground up dried and cut field weed/ bio-field waste. Try to place them in a paper-based bucket ( similar to KFC) with a seed of a tree. This can then result in growing apple trees, as they take roughly 4 to 10 years to bear fruit. This can result in afforestation in remote areas. Other native trees can also be considered. This can then be a part of the Carbon Offset plan for the local government and a means to have sustainable employment.
