Could not agree more with you. I watched it as a new whole thing on its own and really enjoyed it.
It's a very well thought out adaptation, retaining all the key characters and story points but moving them around to better fit this format.
I am trippin big time on Kyoshi ❤ long time fan and this adaptation kills it. Wonderful metaphor for needing more heroes in todays society
More changes I liked for this adaptation. It's more meaningful in live action to have the scroll be something that has been passed from one generation to the next, and Gran-gran was hiding it. Having Katara randomly find it works in the cartoon, but would have felt far more random and convenient in this version. It allowed them to streamline by eliminating the pirates (but referencing them).
I also like that Zhao is a low-level officer in a remote area, so he's ambitious and conniving but still needs help. Having Azula be his puppet master is yet another layer I enjoyed.
Absolutely loved Ken Leung as Zhao in this. He plays such a detestable git to absolute perfection.
Really enjoyed this episode. The Kyoshi addition was very cool. Good to see what an Avatar could do.

Great 1st and 2nd Episodes Starting Off Strong! Love the Acting which Sokka and Aang is Spot On. Katara and Zuko takes some getting use to but the Special Effects, Cinematography, Scope and Scale is Par Excellence. 29:15 Did you see Firelord Ozai snatch the Message from that guys hands?!? So Real Emperor Moves. My Favorite part was the Suki & Sokka Romance, Well Done.
I missed the foaming at the mouth guy from this episode. Then I realised, I was the foaming at the mouth guy when Kyoshi showed up. Absolute hype - not only did it thematically make sense, but the visuals were stunning.

I never understood how a boy largely raised by his grandmother and sister would end up so sexist, I think removing that aspect was a good idea.

It’s not like he grew up in the North where that sexism is actively taught.
The absence of his father and being the only male left formed his image of what he thinks true masculinity is.
His ego and the responsibility he carries made him think he is better than who he actually is.
Largely raised by his grandmother and sister? Sokka's father went off to war when he was a young teenager, and he is also Katara's older sibling.
I am aware of his younger sister's nurturing qualities, but he excelled at being a protective older brother.
