Gordon Cormier (Aang) surprised me in this first episode, his acting got better and improved in the later episodes

    Sad for your loss.
I liked this first episode. It did a good job of setting the stage. The visuals were great.
I liked that they showed the fight in the beginning. It does heighten the gravity of his role.
Enjoyed your reaction. Looking forward to the next.

I enjoyed your reaction video to Avatar The Last Airbender. When I first saw the tv show for the first time, I was shocked to see how dark the tv show was going with showing people being burned to a crisp by the firebenders. I liked the adaptation for the Avatar The Last Airbender. I just didn’t expect the tv show to have a darker tone. When’s your next reaction video to Avatar The Last Airbender? I really enjoyed your takeaways and reactions to the tv show for the first time.

Haha, I can't believe you guys were blaming Gran-Gran for breaking the news to Aang. She didn't say anything in a cold way or anything, it's just harsh news and there's no real easy way to break that to anyone. Her breaking the terrible truth to him isn't the problem, it's the terrible truth that's the problem.
I found that with this series, having previous knowledge and deep love of the original IS more a detriment to enjoying this version. I had to try to detach myself and stop expecting/hoping to see certain things from the show and just think about it from the POV of someone who hasn't seen the original and if the choices make sense and I believe they really do. The choices they make still keep the essence of the characters (mostly) and/or the point of those characters, in the story, is in keeping with the relations in the original. If there aren't the same connections, like you were mentioning about Katara not being as...I'm not sure...caring(?) to Aang but being more empathetic, it's because she JUST met him and hasn't had the time, like they had in the cartoon, to just hang out with him. She's relating his experience to hers and the trauma there, which she obviously has PTSD from. It makes sense story-wise and would've seemed a bit fast in the live-action, I think, to basically call him part of their family. This is another example of how previous knowledge can be a bit of a detriment, when you're expecting them to act the same way as in the cartoon, when the same circumstances aren't there. I feel like, as a live-action story, this does flow really well and is appropriately more dark as they don't shy away from the horror and stakes of the Fire Nation. They get to some stuff much quicker and move events around, but it does work, I feel, if you take it on its own. There's a couple of things I miss and had to get over because I liked them on the original. They were different here, but looking back on it, they do make sense in kind of a "real world" sense. I've started to limit my reactions to this series to people who haven't seen the original or it's been so long that they don't remember the details 'cause otherwise there's just constant comparisons and, inevitable, disappointments in parts changed or left out. I tend to watch the first few, if they enjoy them and are open to the changes. If they lament too much of how things are different, it's not a fun watch. Like how I had to do with the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" show because I have not read the books (saw the first movie, but don't remember much at all) and really enjoyed the show, but I had to stop watching people who had read the books 'cause they kept pointing out and lamenting the differences (some very minor) from the books.
One of the things someone mentioned in comments this year that I hadn't really thought of all the times I watched the original is how quickly Aang processes and moves past the trauma and that is because he was raised by Air Nomads and Gyatso even stressed in the cartoon that you can't dwell on the past, but focus on the now and the future. Basically to try to do your best in the now, always. It's great for a kids' show that doesn't want to dwell on the darkness too much, but it's also a great adult way to explain how Aang still keeps a positive attitude even though he's had so much trauma.

I've always thought if Australia had benders, it would be mostly fire and earth benders. Water and air benders would be in coastal areas

Seeing the Firebenders' difficulty even with the comet, I disagree with Shozen that the Airbenders "might have prevailed." If not for the comet the Airbenders would have wiped the floor with Shozen and all of his lackeys.

So glad you are reacting to this. I believe it’s certainly a mixed bag. Some great things and some not so great. However, taken as a whole a solid adaptation. I look forward to hearing your thoughts as you go through it
