What you could potentially do is have a mothership that can come rescue you. Imagine being able to venture out and explore on a bike or small rover, but when you are in danger you can have a rescue craft come to your location and pick you up.
I used to do this sort of thing all the time with just auto-pilot. And an entire galaxy of waypoints. It was a NIGHTMARE! It's SO much simpler now. Go there. Do this. Come back, or do the other thing. Gotta love it.

Had not played Space Engineers for years now and only slightly recall that there was a range limit for signals. Am I wrong about that memory or did it change maybe? My priority for sanity, social life and better timemanagement had not allowed me to come back to it. And the state of the game back then had not been the best. But what I saw here might be interesting to think about it after so many years.
@@Chareidos SE's game loops have probably not changed much since you played, but they have definitely improved in execution tremendously in the past few years. Clang is still our lord, but he is slightly less obvious and more consistent now. Collisions, combat, etc are pretty fun now. And the new AI blocks raise the floor for making basic script type behaviors into modular building blocks without need for scripting (and based on Keen's PCU valuation, these new blocks seem to be moderately light on performance). There is still a range for signals, but beacons have a tremendous range. Don't recall for small grid, but large grid is max 200 km. Antenna max range is less, but not used for this application.

Best thing would be a *Resupply Missile.* Like a standard GPS missile, but at the end activates a *parachute,* and gently lands at target point. US Space Force actually considered this idea using the Starship-Super Heavy to offload cargo from orbit. Coincidentally, tomorrow on Thursday 20.4.2023 is first ever Starship *orbital flight test,* SpaceX will livestream the whole thing on their channel: ruclips.net/video/-1wcilQ58hI/видео.html (assuming they don't cancel)
I could see using this system on a flying vehicle transport that would carry like 4 AI tanks, kind of like an air drop ground force of tanks or rovers. Aaron could you deploy an automated drone printer and have an ATC that you could make requests for specific supplies from and then have it task any free drones to accomplish your request from a specific grid and bring it? Think a mix between the movie Obliviion and the game Factorio drones. They could have face blocks and names so it would always be a fun surprise to see who brings your requested item and the "mood" they are in!

Like a company come to exploit resources. Naturally there will be some evil powerful monster that interferes with every company's attempt to please their corporate overlords. (Probably you)
I don't mind flying from place to place, but can always only be in one ship at a time. being able to pick up from multiple resource asteroids simultaneously would speed things up considerably.
I can see this as a way for auto recover of field assets. Lets say you got an orbital deployment and recover system with a tank. You can send the ODRS with the tank to an area to drop the tank and RTB. After the mission is complete, and the tank is recoverable, you can press a button and send the ODRS to automatically collect the tanks.
I want you to build a beacon on a short range missile and fire it into the enemy base. Then launch an ICBM on the beacon from the other side of the planet.
As we can see, the enemy base is now exposed. The next move is obvious. We can launch an RT-2PM2 Topol-M cold-launched three-stage solid-propellant silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile to attack the enemy base
It would be interesting if you had a small drone attached to the vehicle that basically acts like a messenger, and when you turn it on, it makes its way back to base and connects to the base and sends the command to launch the supply ship.
@@LastStandGamers we have to use our imagination sometimes and while i felt this way too during the first 1/2 of the video it was easy to grasp how miniscule of a detail it is when showing off how efficiently you pulled off this genesis of all the cool ideas in the comments
If the rotors are an issue, I imagine if you have them rotating opposite of each other like the real thing did, one spinning one way, the other the other way, it would probably help a lot with the AI's issues, I don't know for sure if it would work, but it might?

The Westland Lynx AH.7 and AH.9 Multipurpose Military Helicopter, the Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion Heavy Lift Cargo Helicopter and the Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk Medium Lift Utility Helicopter. Imagine seeing these Helicopters Moving in with Cargo and Reinforcements. The British using the Lynx's alongside the Chinooks they Purchased from the U.S. While the U.S. uses the Chinooks, Super Stallion's and Black Hawks as follows..... British Army: 41 Chinook HC1 (CH-47C), 32 Chinook HC2 and 6 HC2A (CH-47D), 119 Lynx AH.7 and 24 AH.9 U.S. Army: 233 CH-47C, 427 CH-47D, 234 CH-53E, unknown number of the 5,000 Black Hawks built as of January 2023 as the UH-60M. These are the Historical Limits of the Helicopters in Britain and American Inventories, but the Thought of Having Helicopters Moving Cargo and Possibly even Troops and Equipment around is very Interesting. A way I do airdrops of supplies to have a huge aircraft with a large bay like the Atlas on the workshop and just yeet them out the back on chutes, the UNSC supply drop thingie I found worked great
They need to add toggles to a few windows like say you want it to slow down of speed up at point or slow down at one (Sam or docking for example) also I haven't been on since the update but it'd be nice if the event controller block read the ore detectors n could signal to the ai ore deposits. This could aid in mining or scouting mining locations or it could be used to target hydrogen systems for a homing middle of sorts. That's if you can configure ore detectors to read cargo containers
Does this still work if the ship is out of range of the beacon? That would be cool, otherwise it will be limited to beacon/signal range which may add an extra level of engineering complexity
I cannot take seriously a helicopter without rotors that… y’know… rotate. These kinds of systems would be kinda cool though in a world with huge distances between bases. Maybe with little to no ore anywhere other than at the bases to make sure you can’t just build a bunch of mining and refinery rovers/ships. Actually enforce good logistics being a deciding factor in who wins.
Gday mate. Love the simple way you describe these things! I was wondering if you could setup something that has the ability to engage or disengage more downward thrust depending on the weight of the transporter. I am trying this atm with a small hydro machine that has about eight small thrusters under it. With no load it would fly on 2 thrusters but if I load it with ore for example it would turn on more additional thrusters till lift is attained. The idea it not really for the cargo change but I want this one machine to be easily with more turrets and ammo without needing to manually add more thrust. I have a really cool little example of the vehicle if you need an example. I have also purposely made it over complicated so that it needs to use the ai bits to make it flyabld

This is space engineers at its finest, really cool to watch. I'm looking foward to tge scenarios that can be made now!

since you can't make the rotors spin maybe you could use projectors to make a disc, to atleast add some kind of spin / blur effect.

The Heli always know where a beacon is at all times. Heli knows it bacause it knows where it isnt.

Beacons have a crazy transmission range.
In the event that you're out of beacon range, a laser antenna could be used
I haven't had an issue where I have ended up out of range for longer range flights I flick collision avoidance on.

You can do that with event controllers
The AI blocks seem to retain the beacon info/position after turning the beacon off.

It can just activate the collision avoidance for that section of the journey and use a connecter rather than a landing gear.

Could this system be repurposed for some sort of airstrike? Drop a beacon pod and have a ship fly in and drop a bomb or start firing at the location.
