BFPO British Forces Posted Overseas. In the 60s the BBC had a programme on the radio called two way family favourites. It was families here to their love ones posted overseas and vice versa. Mainly Germany from memory, although places like Singapore and other BF overseas. KB would know that, she's only a couple of years younger than me and the war was still casting a big shadow.

I love her lyrics, especially with the lines,
"Give the kid the pick of pips
And give him all your stripes and ribbons
Now he's sitting in his hole
He might as well have buttons and bows"
It shows the kind of irony that these soldiers will be awarded honorable medals in combat and be decorated with them in their burials yet even with the most prestigious award they would mean nothing to the soldier because they're dead. Hence comparing them to "buttons and bows" because that's all they're worth anymore.
Another detail to add, in the beginning where the two soldiers come into frame, the one on the left blinks repeatedly while the one on the right doesn't. A great detail representing the different kinds of shellshock as well as hers when she only blinks at the cocking of a gun.

Another Kate Bush masterpiece relevant to today’s increasing talk about the threat of nuclear war is her 1980 hit ‘Breathing’. Highly recommended.

BFPO = British Forces Post Office.
The KT symbol is apparently hidden on Kate's album covers.
The BBC put this song on a list of songs, not to be played during the 1st Gulf War, as it was considered to be promoting an "anti war" message. When later, the existence of the list was revealed, there was a public backlash about it, and to my knowledge, it (and the other songs on the list) has never been subjected to a ban by the BBC again. What still remains unclear is, just who put the list together: the BBC itself, or was the organisation put under pressure to accept a list created by the government?
As for another Kate Bush song to react to, I'm suggesting a single release from Kate's "Never For Ever" album: "Breathing".
Note: You have already reacted to the two other singles released from the same album: Babooshka and "Army Dreamers" itself.

Here's a little thing, (because you noticed the KTB logo, it was the logo of a short-lived pub band she first went on stage with, the KT Bush Band), Kate's album covers are all worth taking a close look at, hidden on every one is a small KT symbol... you have to search...

As always an intelligent reaction/analyzer. You say it perfectly and with heart (THANK YOU) these old army ego based generals sending young lives into a situation where they already know there is no hope. The songs lyrics along with the melancholic waltz is heartbreaking.

Hi and thanks for this. I guess the first thing that really needs to be said is yes 'The Big Country' is worth watching, but yes, 'Paths of Glory' is a truly legendary piece of cinema!
As for this particular Kate Bush song some people have seen it as being anti-army or anti-armed forces, or even anti-war. But according to Kate Bush it really isn't. Others have suggested that it really refers to the conflict in Norther Ireland (she does use an Irish accent after all), but again according to her it really isn't. In her own words Army Dreamers:
“Is about a mother who lost her son overseas. It doesn't matter how he died, but he didn't die in action - it was an accident. I wanted the mother to be a very simple woman […] a grieving mother who, through the death of her soldier boy, questions her motherhood […] The song was meant to cover areas like Germany, especially with the kids that get killed in manoeuvres, not even in action. […] I'm not slagging off the Army, it's just so sad that there are kids who have no O-levels and nothing to do but become soldiers, and it's not really what they want. That's what frightens me […] It's [...] embracing the whole European thing. That's why it says BFPO in the first chorus, to try and broaden it away from Ireland […] It's not specifically about Ireland, it's just putting the case of a mother in these circumstances, how incredibly sad it is for her. How she feels she should have been able to prevent it.”
The BFPO identification at the commencement of the song has generated quite a bit of discussion down the years. Some interpret it as "British Forces Post Office" others interpret it as "British Forces Posted Overseas." I do come down on one side of that discussion but it is suffice to say that what BFPO signals in the song is that whereas her son left home as a soldier, he is returning being shipped home as cargo. "Army Dreamers" is actually really about the army in peace time (despite the ‘Cold War’), and is best viewed through the lens of the British Army of the Rhine during the Cold War. The song is not so much anti-army as it is anti-denial of opportunity and prospects to people on the basis of class, poverty, or early life disadvantage. Kate was always very insistent about this aspect of the song - the blight of a dead end with no opportunity that leaves young people with nothing else. The song is far more a commentary on economic or social policy than a discussion of the rights and wrongs of when or whether to resort to war. The tragedy at the heart of the song is even more sad than you suggested, because in the song her son doesn't even have the 'glory' of falling in battle and dying in war, instead he dies in some accident in peace time.
Kate uses an Irish accent here (she is half Irish on her mother’s side). She says:
“The Irish accent was important because the treatment of the song is very traditional, and the Irish would always use their songs to tell stories, [...] There's something about an Irish accent that's very vulnerable, very poetic, and so by singing it in an Irish accent it comes across in a different way.”
One other remarkable thing about this song is that despite all of the dark subjects she covers elsewhere in her work, this is the Kate Bush song that would eventually ended up getting banned by the BBC during the first Gulf War.
Thanks again for this. it was a really ood reaction video. For different kind of Kate Bush song I always think that nobody's delve into her music is complete without the video for 'This Woman's Work, which she herself directed, or her song "Rocket's Tail" which doesn't have a video but does include David Gilmour doing some superb guitar work.
Thanks once again. I really enjoyed this.

Paths of Glory is a masterpiece. Kubrick is my favourite director too.

    • @tommydevlin702
      @tommydevlin702 6 месяцев назад

@@MaceAroundTheWorld If you are a Kubrick fan you might find the Kate Bush song "Get Out of My House" interesting as it was inspired by Kubrick's movie version of the Stephen King novel "The Shining." Now, it is a VERY challenging song, possibly the most extreme, far out Kate Bush song, (which is quite a statement since we are talking about Kate Bush). But if you can tolerate the collision of sounds, crazy lead vocal and multi-layered backing music and vocals, then it really is a rollicking, spectacular finale to a rollicking, spectacular album. Quite a few people find it just too extreme and weird. I adore it.

Absolutely adore this song... Kate absolutely nails it lyrically and musically. (Another song that works along this line is THE JAM: "Little Boy Soldiers" from their brilliant "Setting Sons" album.
"PATHS OF GLORY" is a brilliant film... couple of other great anti-war films: "JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN" (perhaps the greatest anti-war novel of all-time.) Metallica used the footage from the film for their great music video of their epic song "ONE" , ...and .... "ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT" (Both the early and new versions are fantastic),

I see you have done a large number of Kate's music. Great. But oddly, considering your inquiring mind, you have reviewed neither Peter Gabriel nor Genesis. Since this is my first viewing I guess I should first understand your tastes, but feel these guys would be of interest. As a bridge, try Kate and Peter Gabriel in the video of his song 'Don't Give Up'. (he was the first lead singer of Genesis)

Her original band was The KT Bush Band. The insignia also referred to Kate's KT Fellowship and was used inconspicuously on a few of her album covers. She cleverly sneaked it into a few videos such as "Big Sky".

The context in 1980 was the continuing "Troubles" in Northern Ireland and the threat of accidental war in Europe between the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact vs NATO, which was thought to mean tactical nukes at the very least. In Britain many men with poor job prospects were joining the army instead. Two years later Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and many of these young men were sent to liberate them.
