    "Developing a Brilliant Piano Technique - The Holistic Professional Approach" - my free article on PianoCareer.com that complements the video above:
    www.pianocareer.com/piano-tech...
    Video highlights:
    00:00. Played Introduction.
    00:35. On our menu today: it’s time for a change of perspective!; debunking myths and stereotypes.
    02:52. This video is inspired from your questions. Avoiding the unilateral ‘technique-only’ approach.
    03:18. The ergonomic technical skills you will develop as a member of PCA.
    04:20. Understanding the BIGGER PICTURE. The 7 main pillars of piano playing. Learning to see the whole, not just the parts.
    05:31. An example of the modern ‘unilateral’ approach and its consequences. The main causes of speed walls (and other piano problems).
    07:06. What is TECHNIQUE? Why do you play piano? What determines the value of a piece?
    08:20. Why, What and How - the three main questions we need to answer in order to become good pianists.
    08:56. Making a comparison between speaking and musical performance.
    10:53. The main purpose of good technique: giving us the freedom to convey the message of the piece. Brilliant piano skills can only be developed by connecting our physical movements (technique) with the musical ideas we wish to express.
    11:52. An example of how pre-hearing and mental anticipation (having the mind and hearing guide your fingers) can help you overcome technical barriers.
    12:52. The physical part of playing - a means to an end. Developing our technique while bringing out the expressive tasks of the piece.
    13:36. The benefits of a holistic approach to piano development. Improving our technical skills naturally, simultaneously with all the other pillars.
    13:57. What about muscle memory? Is it important? How do we develop it?
    14:42. If technique is not the most important thing in piano playing, WHY do we need to practice scales?
    15:39. With your mind & hearing in charge, you will never play in a mechanical, percussive manner!
    15:59. What is EXPRESSION? Debunking the most common myths about expression.
    18:27. Bringing out the expressive tasks encoded in the piece by using means of expression. Identifying the main ones.
    19:40. Example: how to bring out a lyrical, peaceful character in Liszt’s Consolation No. 3.
    21:03. Character - means of expression - mental/aural/technical methods for bringing them out.
    21:33. The expressive intention - the foundation of our art. Playing without awareness, in a purely ‘intuitive’ manner, is not expression!
    22:11. Debunking another myth: is expression a ‘talent‘? How does talent fit into this picture?
    22:56. If your main goal is to ‘improve your technique’ - your entire perspective on piano playing needs to change!
    23:12. Conclusion. The importance of understanding the bigger picture for making informed decisions.

    I literally started crying because of this teacher's beautiful and healthy perspective on music and piano playing. Many piano teachers can learn from this video, not only students. This was a wonderful and inspiring video. Thank you very much!

    No magical formulas, no mechanical tricks, no shortcuts, etc...
    Your honesty right out of the gate earned all of my respect young lady.
    It is refreshing to find a Music Teacher on RUclips who is extremely honest about what it takes to become fluent at piano.
    I started 10 months ago at advanced age and I can only attest to the fact that this instrument will take dedication and perseverance on a daily basis for the remaining years of my life. (I wish I were young again so I’d have much more time as I absolutely LOVE piano despite how lousy I am.)
    Thank You as always for sharing your vast array of knowledge, advice, and expertise as you so kindly do, it is sincerely appreciated.

      Ranch Hand As piano professional training from music conservatory graduation for me, every piano teacher have their own opinion. Most of them about piano teacher emphasize basic skills and the dynamic of fingers touching and knuckle's flexible movement especially on Czerny etudes and hanon tempo metronome exercise 120 BPM every day. Gradually accelerate tempo from 120 BPM to 144 BPM. Then 152 BPM to 168 BPM.

      Good young piano teacher require you to practice Czerny, that's order and it must obey. Every level of student's performance is different. You must observe depending on which level of student's performance. Good young piano teacher teach students in accordance with their aptitude.

      Composer's manuscript Chopin etudes show tempo mark for example op 10 no 7 and op 25 no 1. This point is very important. If want to be pianist, international piano competition determine career of pianist. A world of difference about techniques on preliminary competition and first stage.

    Hi, Thank you for all of your videos. I recently began your Piano Academy Course after on and off lessons in my childhood and adult life. Never have I enjoyed piano as much as I do now. After only a week, I feel I already have my tuition's worth of instruction and increase in knowledge. Your discussion on holistic body/wrist movement is a treasure onto itself. I created a diary of my experiences on the Piano World forum which others have said they are finding worthwhile to follow. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge in such a caring way. BTW, I wanted to mention that all of the fundamental skills you bring into your piano instruction are precisely the same as I have learned to bring into my Tai Chi practice: relaxation, imagination, expression via gesture, holistic November's, etc.

    This is a gem! Exactly what is supposed to go into developing a professional pianist. Although, if you explain your little students everything you do to them, their mind would blow up. I try to keep it moving so that this process is unconscious to them. Sometimes, I just explain to them what they can now do and how we got there.

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer  Год назад +2

      Thank you! 😊 Yes, absolutely - in working with children the pedagogical approach is quite different. Instead of explaining, we demonstrate. Instead of logical understanding, we appeal to their intuition and unconscious ability to imitate and assimilate. We use the same principles (of course) - but we apply them differently.

    You really have been given many gifts. Not only your playing, but I have often wished I could speak a difficult (to me) foreign language...such as Russian...as well as you are able to speak English. I am an adult beginner at the piano, but I am trying to absorb as many tips as I can now, in my early playing, in order to avoid having problems later. Thank you!

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Art! Thank you for your appreciation! :) By the way, speaking about gifts: learning any art (or language, or skill) is first and foremost a question of perseverance, consistency, and LOTS of serious practice :). As many great musicians/actors/writers usually say - "success in something is 99% hard work, and only 1% talent/gift". Therefore, simply keep moving forward, day after day, keep learning - and you will be amazed at the enormous distance you have covered! Enjoy your practice! ;)

    Wow! So much information. All great information. Almost more than you just playing and showing what you mean, but it's all about time and the ability to absorb and do all these points all together all the time. That's the true pro. Never had a piano growing up or even in a friends house or even had a piano teacher, but I have always tried to play every time I was near one. My main goal was to learn to sing and play simultaneously and with great articulation and fluid movement. I can do it for a few songs, but learning a new song takes a sabbatical to ever do it. I can sight sing well but never had to chance to play and read music by the notes. I just learned the chords and played as many variations that blended with my voice.
    With the passing of my mom I finally have a piano (even though it's digital it's still a piano). I am 65 and retired now and finally have the time to play but old habits die hard. Watching you gives me new hope to finally play one of the masterpieces of one of my favorite composers Chopin. Thank you for all your hard work in presenting this video and others. I may never be great pianist, but I do have a better understanding of what I should be doing to become a better pianist. Thanks again my beautiful friend...

It is so wonderful to hear from someone that has the knowledge and training in playing the piano and the musical arts. What a relief from hearing others on RUclips that spue out gibberish when teaching music. You come along and explain playing and musicianship in plain English that everyone can understand. I wish everyone could know about your videos especially budding pianists and musicians. I have recommended your videos to anyone wanting to study piano. Hi thank you for making this video. There are so much to learn and apply to ( not just piano but other instrument too) . But I’m wondering if this concept apply the same when Practicing finger technique pieces: etude, scales? Since when apply to your why, what and how, there are not much story, or artistic concept we need to express or think. What is your suggestion on practicing technique repetitive pieces?

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer  5 лет назад +1

      Great question - and I cover it in lots of detail in my step-by-step Scale & Arpeggio Course (available in the Members Area of PianoCareerAcademy.com). Shortly - we never develop our 'finger technique' separately. Yes, of course, when we practice scales or Etudes, technique is our main focus - but it's not just 'finger technique' (without paying any attention to what the arm, elbow or wrist are doing), and we never disconnect our hearing either. Any time we practice (whether it's a Nocturne by Chopin, an Etude or a scale), we need to engage our pre-hearing, to closely monitor the quality of our sound - and, whenever possible, to invent interesting expressive effects. Yes, even while playing a boring 'C Major' scale! haha I demonstrate how to do this in the Scale Course - and you can learn more about it by reading my answer to question No. 19 from our FAQs (www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/).

    I hear alot of debate on hanon or Czerny vrs scales and arpegios. Does it matter?

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer  3 года назад +1

      Hi Eric! The most important thing is not WHAT we practice: it's HOW we practice it. If practiced correctly and mindfully, any exercise or Study can be useful. Still, Hanon is not my favorite (I explain why in my answer to question No. 30 from our FAQs [ www.pianocareeracademy.com/faqs/ ]. Czerny is ok in the right doses - especially for the late beginner and intermediate levels. Scales & arpeggios can be magical if practiced as a holistic exercise - and a complete loss of time if done mechanically, by using a finger-only tensed technique. And, the most important thing, these 3 technical training options (scales, Czerny, Hanon) are not mutually exclusive. I usually recommend a 'scale & arpeggio' foundation onto which you can add smaller doses of Czerny and Hanon (tailored according to individual needs).

    THANK YOU for this! This is a marvelous, comprehensive overview of the spectrum of playing the piano - again, thank you!
    QUITE WITHOUT wanting to start a "brand war" (I my self play a Yamaha U1, and have Yamaha grands at our church) - i would LOVE to hear you demonstrate the excerpt of Liszt’s Consolation No. 3 on a Steinway grand which would bring out and amplify the broader spectrum of timbre and colors resulting from your playing - :-). Even with the controlled blending of the notes, it has been my experience that Yamaha instruments only play louder and softer, but do not change timbre in response the same way a Steinway does - I would love to hear you play this as said before.
    But again - THANK YOU SO MUCH for this - it is brilliant!! :-)

    • @pianocareer
      @pianocareer  3 года назад +1

      Thank you very much for your appreciation! In my part of the world, any piano is a good piano, and we learn to make it SING despite its mechanical deficiencies :). From a young age I was taught to cherish any instrument I get to play - even a 50-year-old broken Russian-brand upright that is also out of tune hahaha. My little Yamaha is actually one of the best instruments I played here in my country. The Steinways from our concert halls are quite old and battered, sadly.

    • @aBachwardsfellow
      @aBachwardsfellow 3 года назад

      @@pianocareer I very much admire your dedication and the inspiration you give us! By no means do I intend be critical - I know that in the hands and heart of an artist such as you, we make any instrument find the music and make it SING! :-) And you do that VERY well. I also have a similar Yamaha, and it does sing nicely. But because I have played many different instruments I know that they sing differently. What I'm saying is that I can hear the sensitivity of your playing, and I know that if you were to play with the same sensitivity on a well-conditioned Steinway it would be some of the best that Steinway has ever sung ! - :-)

      - 15 progressive Lessons (comprising 111 'addictive' sight-reading exercises, structured according to the professional system used in the Russian piano school);
      - 3 super-detailed Introductory Articles where I explain how sight-reading really works (and what common traps, myths and stereotypes to avoid);
      - a downloadable 'Score Collection' comprising 53 pieces that will supplement your sight-reading practice.
      At the moment of writing this reply (July 2017), the Introductory Articles, 6 Progressive Lessons and the 'Score Collection' are already available in the Members Area of my Piano Coaching Coaching Program at PianoCareerAcademy.com - and I keep publishing a new Lesson every fortnight. Lesson No. 7 will be published today or tomorrow! ;)
