Wonderful video gentlemen. There are millions of videos about growing vegetables but so few about preparing and nurturing the soil so I really appreciate this video, thank you. Eibhlin
For improving clay soil dig in organic material like garden compost, if it has a very high clay content dig in sand, but keep it to the ratio of 60:40 (sand 60%). A clay soil with good organic matter is probably the best soil you can get for a vegetable garden.
I use urin 2-7 liter per square meter a year. I use it when it is raining. even better to make a furrow and cover it with soil. Use it latest one month before you harvest. Don*t pour it on the greens which you want to eat, but on the soil only.
First, my soil is hard as cement. Secondly, I have four trees in my backyard and they drop those walnuts that qe can't eat, mulberries, and pine needles. Not to mention the roots from the trees. I'm trying to grow veggies. Also, should I use mulch or straw? Thank you in advance.
Hi!..great videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge!...last year I soaked some comfy leaves in a bucket of water, I opened it not so long ago and there was crusty top on ot but it was still kind f fermenting, it was smelly but not a bad smell, I strained it off and put some worm juice in there a bit of fresh nettle juice, some molasses with an air stone and has been bubblin and frothy away for a few weeks, can you tell me then is this safe to use on my plants, and if so how long should it last and should I leave the air stone in?
+ducatibabe62 Hi, this should be a healthy feed for your plant, a wonderful mixure of potash and nitrogen. The airstone oxygenation should be complete by now. The feed should last for the whole growing season . Cheers, Tony
you can't grow your own seaweed but there are a range of crops you can grow to add nutrients etc, like green manures such as clover mix, vetch, phacelia and buckwheat.
Plus taking so much seaweed from the ocean seems detrimental to me... It has its place in the sea. It's a bit like going to the forest and stealing humus.
To *permanently* improve clay soil you need to add only once charged biochar (it costs money) because it decays in 100+ years. Otherwise add compost but you'll have to add it each year.
Hello mate, Just trying to figure out what I can do about my garden. Alot of it seems to contain clay and things arn't having much joy growing... would it just be a case of buying a whole bunch of top soil or is there anything I can do to transform the clay into soil? Cheers - Absolutely new to gardening by the way! :)
You will have to dig in some organic matter in order to improve your soil , top soil is a start but you will need to get some nutrients into it. We have some use blog articles dealing with soil improvement. www.quickcrop.co.uk/blog/category/improving-your-soil/
Add a solution of ammonium sulfate to your compost pile (1.5 m high ) and then wait 4 to 6 months. The solution will speed up the process of composting. But if manure is available, forget about the chemical: just water the pile with a solution of manure. Keep it wet, not soaked. Use chicken and pigeon manure for alkaline soil.
Love your videos I'm learning all the time still a lot to learn.... Could you please advise me please about wormy juice I have some that's new and some thats old 12 months will I still be able to use these ?
Can I ask where you are located? Cabbage shouldn't be allowed to dry out as it likes moist conditions. Poke your finger into the soil up to your 2nd joint, if the soil is dry at this depth you need to water.
The Germanic Donegal accent is addictive... great channel glad it came up in suggestions

I thought the soil at the start looked great! I'm in Australia and I reckon most Australian soil wouldn't be that good.
Amazing info, love your high quality videos and info. One question please, can we use store bought dry seaweed in our garden? And how
Usefull information. Thanq.

I'm jealous of your soil. I'm growing in subsoil mixed with manure.
I have 2 and a half feet of top soil I thought that was actually not a lot

My family and I have recently started a veg garden and these videos have been invaluable! Any specific tips for improving clay soil? Good luck guys :)

Thanks for the video. Wet areas and less top soil? Means flooding? No drainage?
Yes, but it may also depend on your sub-soil.

artificial fertilisers can add a large variety of minerals much more than npk however they are no competition to organic methods
