I bought a house and I've started a family. Along the way I've seen the good, the bad, the ugly... And have had many people touch my life in ways they'll never know how much it meant. Many of these people are victims of circumstance one way or another, and due to the nature of mobility while homeless I've lost contact with many of them, some probably fine, some probably dead, some I know are dead. I got to chat with him briefly and when I got my photo taken with him I had brought in this kind of discount Lego version of the Enterprise and George actually started to fly it around after we got the picture taken. Which is both absolutely adorable as well as extremely heartwarming. But I bring it up because there was actually some lower decks love during that convention in the form of two people who walked by wearing chu chu shirts. So to get a reference to the chu chu song as well as George it I got a little emotional and I have a feeling that those two people in the chu chu shirts are definitely thinking about that con today
I once took a photo with Nichelle Nichols at a San Francisco Comic-Con in 2017. I was on vacation in the USA at the time, so this was a treasured memory for me. We don't care what our parents consider important during their lives and our children certainly don't care about what we consider important. I love this touching speech he says about the joy of life and it will go on forever after he dies. But if he does die and this is the last Star Trek thing he ever makes, that would mean his final line was "the horsy is going to bite you now." Lol
Met George at a 1992 Trek convention. Advised me to always wear my orange shirt to future panels. He complimented the original Animated Series for keeping Trek on the air. Glad to hear him in Lower Decks.
"Captain Sulu! Even better!" Truer words were never spoken, Boimler. Seeing George Takei reprise Sulu for a cameo in Lower Decks was even better than the DS9 cameos ^_^
Now if we could just get Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton, Whoopi Goldberg, William Shatner, and the J.J. Abrams film cast to reprise their roles for cameos in Lower Decks, the show would be perfect!
I think in universe, Sulu is just empirically cooler than Kirk. He was present for most of Kirk's coolest moments as well as having many of his own. To put it another way, of all of Kirk's greatest accomplishments how many was Sulu NOT there for? And then Sulu went on to have his own extensive career.
This was magical. So glad I didn't know about this cameo. Beautiful sentiment, delivered perfectly. Felt so true to the character and sent shivers down my spine.
He may sounded a little gruffer than normal, but it was still him. I was tearing up at seeing and hearing his voice for one more time like this. Just the way he talked about lost friends makes me not how we only have three of the original crew left for who knows how much longer. But there was just something about seeing an old vet showing up here in this show that was just so good.
For me I like the fact that the one person that Kirk would trust with his home is not Spock or McCoy but Sulu, the one member of his crew that went on to command a star ship.
It's also possible that neither Spock or McCoy could properly care for the place, as neither of them seem to retire anytime soon. The three of them were all workaholics. McCoy is still serving in Starfleet when Picard takes command of the Enterprise D decades later. Sulu is the first member of the crew Kirk sees showing any signs of wanting to settle down, with his deciding to start a family. Why not let the guy look after the farm and give Sulu's family a place to get away from the excitement and relax?

Don't know why people are taking sides with Shatner or Takei. The simplest answer is they're two people who worked together and didn't get along. It happens in the real world all the time, why would TV be any different? What this scene does make clear is that Sulu and Kirk had a good relationship, to the extent that Sulu gently makes fun of Kirk's inability to relax. As a fan, that's what interests me, not some BS about the actors.
I like to think that was the real Captain Sulu giving Boimler some much-needed counsel in his time of need, but it's just as likely that Boimler was enough of a fanboy of the old crew, and now experienced enough on his own, to come up with that in his own head. With all the whatever that happens in Trek, there are all number of ways that Sulu could have spoken to Boimler even without either of them being in the afterlife. When stuff like this happens that we can't explain, we just say a Q did it.
"The horsey's going to bite you now." That was so funny. May I say that George Takei is a friggin legend? Well I did say it and I meant it. Friggin legend...
.... goddamnit. That Sulu moment was really nice. But right a moment later, Lower Decks being Lower Decks, they kick the lingering feelings in the butt with yet another overdone stupidity. Part of me wants to like this show. But the fact that they can´t decide between being a parody and being serious and instead routinely do both always ruins it for me. Especially when their own dumb shenanigans land them in one of those serious moments. "Oh damn, we totally behaved like crazed teenagers, even the senior officers - and now we have to fight for our lives when all this oculd have been avoided by behaving like an at least half-rational being".
That last line describes one of my favorite episodes of TNG lol. Notoriously the one where Data was "Fully Functional." Lower Decks is not a serious show, but it doesn't shy away from trying to tell serious stories, which is something I like about it. The mood whiplash, however, is a core part of that, and if that's something you don't like I can get why it would turn you off from the show. They use it both ways, too. Sometimes they use it to yank the audience away from an emotional moment like this one, and sometimes they use it to lull the audience into a false sense of safety before having something like the abrupt destruction of the USS Solvang take them by surprise.

@@Feasco Ummm I know, that's who this doesn't sound like him. There's no gravel in the voice.
Notoriously the one where Data was "Fully Functional."
Lower Decks is not a serious show, but it doesn't shy away from trying to tell serious stories, which is something I like about it.
It would have been way cooler if Boimler actually met Kirk, and they got William Shatner to voice him.
Not really, by all accounts Shatner is kind of an asshole to work with even at the best of times.
@@KhaosAdmiral Really?
Oh my, no it's wouldn't have.
Nah
Yes, it would have.
