  • Continuing on our look at the characters of the Big O, we now look at Alan Gabriel, the crazed cyborg who longs only for destruction. While a seemingly minor character, his presence contributes an important amount to some of themes of the Big O, so I felt he deserved a glance over. And of course...

    It was quite cathartic to see Schwartzwald lecture Alan as Big Duo pronounced "YE GUILTY" to him before eating him alive.
    After that, seeing Alan's battered hat tossed out by Big Duo's wires was quite amusing.

      I think that was one of my favorite moment as it simultaneously kind of redeemed Shwartzwald or at least wrapped up his fate and punished Alan Gabriel

    Ever notice the butler once crashed his motorcycle straight through a brick tailors shop, picking up an order for Roger, and came out the other side with the tailor in tow as well as the order in one fell swoop? The Christmas episode for reference. I swear he's an android. The butler is a mysterious character beyond all the others really Imo. Thanks for the content!

      Norman does have some inexplicable powers throughout the show, though I always chalked that up to "anime logic" and I always though he was really cool. I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for the view!

      @@obscureanimememories6697 well Norman said himself he was waiting for a master and did not answer when Roger asked why he knew how to work on the o. He responded with a question. He is a part of the big o. Definitely. Also Where does he get all the parts to repair it from? No Wayne tech to give parts. I swear he has access to an underground factory that builds parts and just never mentions it to Roger. I mean when Roger asked Norman that question, he was installing a new faceplate. where did that come from? A GIANT FACE. Seems specialty made to me lol.

    I have noticed the bigs only respond to people with a burning desire or intense emotions or drive or some kind of trauma. Like in bring back my ghost. As the man almost died and wanted to live and believed in justice etc, a big activated and CAUGHT HIM.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697  Год назад +4

      I never thought of that, though it does seems the Bigs respond to and respect people with some sort of conviction, Roger to justice, and Shwartzwald to the truth. This would also explain why Rosewater and Alex Gabriel would have to jury-rig their Bigs to work

    I always enjoyed Alan Gabriel. He shares a lot of characteristics with the Joker. A violent, unstable psychopath whose defining characteristics are his own narcissism and his obsession with the protagonist. Yes he hurts a lot of people but those people aren't really the point. They simply died for his amusement or to put him in conflict with the protagonist. In addition, no matter what side he is on you can be assured he will betray them sooner or later if for no other reason it amuses him.
    Visually, the two characters even look similar. Favoring elaborate suits and a stylish hat, being perilously thing yet having a disturbing level of strength (in Alan's case due to his cybernetics), and the white fave with prominent red lips.
    I truly wish Alan Gabriel had gotten more screentime overall. He was perhaps the most underutilized interesting character the show had and I think he was a more interesting villain than Alex Rosewater.

      Its very interesting you compare Alan Gabriel to the Joker, because as Roger was inspired by Batman, it wouldn't surprise me if Gabriel was inspired by the Joker. As for the screen time, I also agree that Alan did feel a bit underutilized, though I guess that is in line with his nihilistic nature.

    Gabriel tows the line between being hateable, and feared. I think villains should be feared and respected like say Thanos, and not annoying and often lucky despite sub-par competance, like say those in "The A Team" or Iron Man 2. Basically what I'm saying is, criminals should behave professionally, don't you agree? Gabriel is still good, he's not the main villain, and I think he would be subpar in that role. As a wild card also-villain, it's quite perfect.

    • @obscureanimememories6697
      @obscureanimememories6697  Год назад +1

      I think this dynamic is why Alan Gabriel works so well. You are correct when you say he probably wouldn't be the best as a main villain, but as a sort of wild card, he does excellent because that means there is more room for him to just do whatever he wants. He is too unreliable to be a main villain, but this makes him a great wild card in the background, even if he isn't always professional, as I do agree, criminals should behave professionally.

    It wasn't the climax, but the Big Duo fights were hands down the best. Others were good though. Amadeus. I think the underwater city might be the best episode, and not just because Angel in her underwear. It was good just based on that, but then Big O jumping in to save the military police was an epic moment, and the only time the intro music happens in the show.

      I Think Underwater City's conclusion is among my favorite moments of the series too! I Love when Roger gives a big anime line and Dorothy just looks into the camera like "jeez" and then the music sinks up as Roger just punches the enemy out of existence.

      Thinking about it, I do find it ironic that the Joker is a character that seems to have a good deal of substance to it, even if not entirely truthful or sane and yet Alan Gabriel feels so hollow a man even though he was probably at least partially inspired by the joker.

      So that got me thinking and I came up with 2 ways to answer that question
      First, I simply looked at all the terms and thought which fit Alan the best, then I took the actual Brigg-Myer test, answering it as I feel Alan would
      For the first method I choose
      E: He seemed extroverted enough, taunting Roger and others. In fact interacting with others seems important to him even if in a twisted way
      S: Alan is a pragmatic man only loyal to himself and who expends most of his energy for his goal, that of making the world a worse place, focusing on that. He has no cares for social norms, the past, or creativity.
      T: This one was hard as Alan is extremely expressive and fixates on how he views (feels?) about the world (a case for the Feeling trait), though he also lacks any empathy and again I have to agree here as he also seems to have some kind of twisted logic/objectivity
      P: This one was easy as its clear Alan does not organize or care about plans at all
      So, by looking at the letters in vacuum, I seem to agree, however after taking the test as I feel Alan would...
      I got ISTP... twice. The last three letters are the same so I don't need to explain those, and I think the reason it assigned I instead of E was because answering as Alan basically means discarding conventional sociability, which I think the test interprets as "This guy doesn't like interacting with people" though I guess it is kinda accurate as Alan seems to be a sadist implying he doesn't value humanity/healthy human interactions.
      After reading the description of both ESTP and ISTP, I do think Alan is ESTP as he is a very energetic man who is stubborn in how he sees the world and himself and because he has a showiness not necessarily found in ISTP descriptions. Good analysis!!!

      @@obscureanimememories6697 very little. It’s hard to even find scenes of him including when he attacked dorothy. The studio was going out of business so I guess it didn’t matter.
