I love how you guys are enjoying the freedom of battery powered lights. Please tell me how you manage your batteries for your LED lights, and what to expect when keeping multiple lights powered over a long period of time. Like how many charged batteries do you start your shoot with, and how many chargers do you need to keep up with charging rotation? I love my LED panels and look forward to cutting the cord!
Nice! Thanks for the tips. If I ever get into bigger productions like this I'm definitely going to come back and watch these videos. You guys are building a nice selection for film makers :D
Thanks for sharing some tips and tricks guys. Got a couple of shoots coming up soon so was really useful to see this, always wondering how to get round light boxes on set :)
I've been searching for those types of reflector tapes. Pretty expensive when I've found out some nice tapes in a signaling store. I asked the guy if they keep the scrap tapes, he said yes and I bought a few of them. Since they used the scrap for some detail jobs. They got different color of tapes every two weeks! I'm glad I've found that store! Way cheaper then buying online those tapes.
I go to Full Sail University and they have and incredible selection of lights but A very limited selection of the new LED lights. Very helpful video guys, thanks!
Great video! If anybody is looking for LEDs for cheap, I recently bought some puck lights from lowes and attached a bunch to a 2by4. They are great for lighting in tight spaces like cars n such.
05:33 Pulse WIDTH modulation. To make it understandable for Gamers: it's like repeatedly tapping the forward key to move forward slowly, in stead of at full speed.
Please consider doing an in-depth video in color correcting / grading / theory video! It'd be very much appreciated and one thing I feel like you guys would cover very well!
I will soon shoose what to study through college and i am wondering what it is you should study in college if you want to work with Virtual effects and motion graphics?
Trying to replicate this effect using white reflective tape and an LCD panel just to the side of the camera. Doesn't look nearly as awesome! any suggestions? Does the green help it pop? what kid of tape did you guys use?
The ringlight technique is cool, I was thinking 'ermm, shadows?', but the use of it is brilliant haha. I'm only here for my photography (well, when the camera doesn't move eh)
silly question but answer would be appreciated. doesn't the light get to the actors though? because of how bright they are?@.@ or the more lights you have set up, do the actor's eyes simply adjust to the environment?
It is a bit high unless you have sufficient funds and actually you can make a quality film with just a small led light you can check out my short film which i made with limited equipment you can check it out if you want
Can someone please explain that ring light and reflective tape In more detail. Do I need to have a certain colour led light to make it go a certain colour or can you get tape that reflects in a different colour? EG in the video was the tape or LED green?
@Niko...Or maybe we just like learning for the sake of learning, and the hope that one day we'll have time and money to use what we learn here. Thanks for the great video guys!
And I know you guys do a lot of color grading in post, but would an LED light that could change colors (aka full color spectrum, not just normal lighting changes) be useful to you? My physics research is currently on tunable semiconductors; one of the benefits of my research being successful would be an LED that could change colors easily.
Andrew Copple The issue with using colored lighting in a shoot is how it will affect every color around it. In my personal experiences, just lighting everything with clean, neutral light then color grading it later was much better than working with colored light on the shoot. Though, I have also worked in theater, and replacing those heavy lights with LEDs would be amazing. No more using gels, just universal LED panels that change color on the fly would be effing fantastic.
The Conquering Enigma Thanks! That's the idea. If we used the right material, it shouldn't have to be too much more expensive to have those extra features. Only downside is we're ab initio; in other words, we are before even the experimental phase of testing. It's not going to exist cheaply and effectively tomorrow. :-/
Not to compete with their advertising (but it was still informative), I have information for those of us in the LOWER PRICE RANGE (umm due to the LACK of money, not b/c we're being "cheap" - remember, in A/V/computer equipment, you get what you pay for!) The 1 downside is the included filters are a little miscolored. The tungsten (room lights) filter is a lil too orange, so ye must color correct it later in the computer. BUT these lights are DAYLIGHT balanced and if ye use that and not worry about the filters, it's awesome. NEEWER LED has some great LED lights. A 160 bulb is awesome and only $28. (I use that one, or rather 3 of em.) There's even a 216 bulb for only $38. (Those don't include tax or shipping, but that's not much either) Check em out on Amazon. Each light takes 6 AA batteries and will run for 1.5 hours (tho it starts to get dim a little over an hour in) I solved my battery dilemma by initially paying more for RECHARGEABLE AA batteries (and a $30 15-minute charger). The batteries seem expensive, but worth the initial investment.
it's called "linear" control, not "amperage", ampere is the unit for electrical current. And it's very power inefficient (the regulator circuitry needs to dissipate the difference between input and output current)
Check out Amazon, Ive been using flicker free portable light panels made by "fancier"... one of the better "knockoffs"... They come in different wattages, from a couple hundred watts all the way up to 1000 watts, with built in dimmer knob. I have been using the cn600sa for months and it's been a reliable workhorse. Almost exactly the same as the lights shown by Sam and Niko in this video, minus the fact that you have to drop gels in to change the color temperature (which they come with!). But that's a minor caveat considering the price (under $300.for the 600sa). I don't usually recommend knock off gear, but these lights have been absolutely phenomenal, and at a price I could actually afford.
+samandniko I was watching the directors pro tips video not that long ago and I was wondering about Sam's music, is that what the outro song is? Or is it someone else's? Thanks
Prism is the reason I fell in love with corridor digital, I didn't realise you were doing such run and gun shooting even back then!
Loved your presentation at NAB about this. I'm glad you made a video so everyone could see the magic. Keep on keepin' on!
awesome, love all the effects you added in, shows how much you guys care about your audience :)
Loved your on-the-spot sound effects as to talked about "cool".
i love your style of explenation and how good you do
I learned a lot, never really even though seriously about these kinds of lights. Thanks guys.

Thanks guys! I love the technical tutorials!
Great tutorial! Very informative and useful.
Can you do a tutorial on filming stunts, fight scenes and/or practical effects?
Thanks!
Nice! Thanks for the tips. If I ever get into bigger productions like this I'm definitely going to come back and watch these videos. You guys are building a nice selection for film makers :D

Every time you guys use Vanishing Point in a vid, I am compelled to re-watch Brush With Death. Love your work!
I'm excited for the future when these come down in price, filmmaking gear just keeps on getting better and better!
Guys thanks a lot for this kind of videos!
It's Pulse WIDTH Modulation, just FYI
Play at 0.5 speed.
They sound drunk
LOL
Strienghardt Why you make fake accounts.
Thank you for this
You can really hear their Minnesota accents at half speed.
As always, really helpful advice! Thanks

As always, really helpful advice! Any chance of putting product information in the description?
I was just looking into getting some LED panels. Thanks for the info!
youre the best guys
woah that reflector tape trick was awesome!
Great job guy's
Great video, thanks!
I go to Full Sail University and they have and incredible selection of lights but A very limited selection of the new LED lights. Very helpful video guys, thanks!
you guys should check out the Cineo HS. Pulls about the same amount from a LED but outputs almost 4k watts. Pretty cool light
Please!!!! Discuss your tips on Battery Management when lighting with LEDs. How do you stay on top of it?
the reflector tape idea is genius!!!
Their shirts made me think of a Titanfall/DayZ mashup. Now I want one.
Do you guys use mocap for your videos when there is a 3d character?
What software do you guys use for the 3d aspect of the videos?
Great informative video! Thanks!
Niko did look pretty damn sick with that sword.
I can't wait until I have the skill and funds to learn the art of lighting!!
Needed this, thanks! Maybe a video on lenses next? Where and how you should use them :D
I think they made one! It's on this channel, and it's really helpful.
So So goood! its so so good!
Great video! If anybody is looking for LEDs for cheap, I recently bought some puck lights from lowes and attached a bunch to a 2by4. They are great for lighting in tight spaces like cars n such.
lol i did something like that for lighting in my short film that is so cool
05:33 Pulse WIDTH modulation.
To make it understandable for Gamers: it's like repeatedly tapping the forward key to move forward slowly, in stead of at full speed.
Hey sam and niko! I went to your SFX panel at vidcon.
Please consider doing an in-depth video in color correcting / grading / theory video! It'd be very much appreciated and one thing I feel like you guys would cover very well!

Where did Sam get his DayZ t-shirt from?
Pulse 'width' modulation chaps, not wave. But otherwise good info.
I'm using that reflector tape trick at some point.
so i went to litepanels and i realized how much they were how did u guys afford it were u get your money
Where do you buy this reflector tape online?
Guys, tell me where I can buy a light that you set on the camera?
What would be the best LED Lights for a couple hundred like $200 or $300 each?
The ringlight technique is cool, I was thinking 'ermm, shadows?', but the use of it is brilliant haha. I'm only here for my photography (well, when the camera doesn't move eh)
silly question but answer would be appreciated. doesn't the light get to the actors though? because of how bright they are?@.@ or the more lights you have set up, do the actor's eyes simply adjust to the environment?
Can you guys post links for the lights?
love it ;)
1900$ for a light seems to be a fucking lot if you are not a Hollywoodmovie Producer OR Corridor Digital.
its about the range I would think for a good LED light
IKR?
That's actually not much for any kind of light, unless you're a small indie film director
If your looking for budget film/short making and wanting cheap lighting Film Riot are pretty good for showing how to do that
It is a bit high unless you have sufficient funds and actually you can make a quality film with just a small led light you can check out my short film which i made with limited equipment you can check it out if you want
3:46 THATS AWESOME!
super!
sweet!
Sam, where can I get the T shirt ago what are you wearing? dear greetings from Germany :)
Great video! Thanks!
p.s. Pulse-Width Modulation (not Pulse Wave Modulation) ))
Do those batteries recharge or do you just have to get a new one when they die?
Rockin that DayZ shirt!
That LootCrate Titanfall top! :)
Can someone please explain that ring light and reflective tape In more detail. Do I need to have a certain colour led light to make it go a certain colour or can you get tape that reflects in a different colour? EG in the video was the tape or LED green?
Just use any reflective tape and shine a light from the cameras point of view directly at said tape... old trick, its been around forever.
It's the tape that is coloured not the light.
James In A Week cheers.
Look into "scotch guard", to be specific.
Love you guys no homo haha great tips!
You should do loot crate unboxing assuming that titanfall shirt niko is wearing is from lootcrate??
solid
what do u guys think about the aputure lightstorm?
its a good midrange light with pretty strong output and good built quality
What happens with the sound at 5:42? :) Interesting...Can someone explain? :)
@Niko...Or maybe we just like learning for the sake of learning, and the hope that one day we'll have time and money to use what we learn here. Thanks for the great video guys!

8:00, there's a helmet from shock troopers on the table.
Yaaaaasss
I think you meant to say "pulse-width modulation", not "pulse-wave modulation" :P
it's called "linear" control, not "amperage", ampere is the unit for electrical current.

NICE! I have a pair of DIY LED lights. :D

*Yup yup*
We use those batteries at work!
Yes.. yes.. I know some of those words..
Nice DAYZ shirt
"So anyways, that's how you do it."
For anyone with a tighter budget Digital Juice has some pretty decent on camera lights that go for about $260.
Pulse-width modulation
for real were do u guyz get your money
Nathaniel Medici The RUclipss
+samandniko I was watching the directors pro tips video not that long ago and I was wondering about Sam's music, is that what the outro song is? Or is it someone else's? Thanks
+Degree MO sam's
+Degree MO It's called Vanishing Point by Sam. corridordigital.bandcamp.com/track/vanishing-point-brush-with-death
PWM = Pulse Width Modulation, not Pulse Wave Modulation, Just an FYI
5:33 - pulse Width modulation. =\
I could never memorize who's Sam and who's Niko. Now I know it's just like in LoTR: Sam is the chubbier one :D
PWM is pulse width modulation, not wave. Otherwise a great video
4:12
$2,000 lights?! Boy! let me just whip out my parents money!
i keep thinking there's a laser on niko's chest >.>
