interesting, at around 3:36 you can see all the dry palm fronds and grass that's been blown down and into the roadsides by the wind. This would have been tinder dry and gone up like instant firestarter. no wonder it spread so fast and got so hot! imagine a fire that's burning on unlimited twigs and kindling... scary

I know that exact feeling. 2 yrs ago when the wildfires were raging and out of control here in north central Texas and watching it coming straight for us. It's gut wrenching . Knowing that it totally out of your hands. What didn't burn the 1st round of fires , did the 2nd and 3rd. We are under high alert , red flag, and have been for 3 weeks. God bless all of you. I am so sorry. Prayers going up .

Looking at all the dead palm fronds and wood lying on the road. That town was a tinder box. Lots of trash and overgrown brush. Why did people not heed the raging fire and smoke nearby and leave sooner, especially with the hurricane force winds blowing in every direction?

It's sad to think there is a good chance that some of these people seen in this video didn't make it out. This seems like pompeii, in current times. The winds where so strong people should have been evacuated from the area. Any fire in the distance, with that smoke moving that fast, in that direction it like pompeii where people went about business until circumstances took their lives away.

I don't understand why when they realized the so called alarms were down they didn't alarm at coast from ship or military aircraft? I get there was no power or cell phone but reliance on those was your " plan"? My question is, what circumstances were needed to take these lives away?
Fire started at the solar farm/power station by the school, on an isolated grassy area, outside town.
If it looked iffy, why no evacuation attempt?
Why block them in, re routing them in, not away?
Why was the water turned off
All these videos, I don't see a single police or fire tender. Apart from the arse hole following orders to kill. .

I don’t need police to tell me what to do when there is a raging wildfire so close with high winds blowing every direction. I am packing my family and leaving.

I agree with others on here that this video is disturbing on so many levels. I've noticed in many of the Lahaina videos, that low hanging criss-crossing power lines were an issue. It appears they were already this way before the fire. Lots and lots of trees, including dead palm fronds on the ground, and all very close to houses. Narrow streets, no sidewalks. Honestly, it looks like a very impoverished area, which is surprising to me. It looks like there was plenty of neglect on the upkeep of the trees, power lines, and neighborhood. Thinking about how the rich areas were unaffected by the fire, I'm guessing they did not have this situation with the power lines, well manicured grounds, and probably were watering the grounds a lot. What a lesson not to rely on government officials or just trust that they're doing their job. But truly, I don't understand how people weren't told to evacuate as soon as fires started. What did they think was going to happen, with winds like that??

The wind strength on an island in the middle of the pacific combined with extreme dry land and total lack of forest management and corrupt government is just the perfect storm. Never been to Hawaii
    always wanted to go
and the Islands are still on my bucket list.
Maui & Kauai are 2 foremost places to visit.
About a week ago when I first heard about wild fires on Maui I thought it was the strangest thing.
Thats because I always associated wet and lush, and high precipitation conditions on the Islands.
But I knew nothing about the drought Maui was experiencing.
Or the invasive species vegetation such as fountain grass and how it can contribute to the grasslamds becoming a tinder box.
Yes I knew about the hurricane, but heard it changed course of something ,
but failed to consider the high pressure system.
When I heard reports of people jumping into the ocean to escape the flames I thought "OK stuff is getting REAL over there- what on earth is happening?!"
For years I have invested in learning the history of the Islands, the culture of its people and have grown to really appreciate a great fondness for the native people of Hawaii.
    This tragedy breaks my heart.
My prayers and love go out to ALL people of Hawaii and the visitors in the wake of what happened.
Not in a position to go over there and lend a helping hand right now.
But if I could be there, I would!

Maui has been dry for decades. I come from the subtropics where the landscapes were always green due to regular rain, but this place hardly ever rains. Yellow white grass everywhere. The green you see is either due to heavy sprinkling system at the resorts or in someone’s yard, or high up in the mountains where clouds gather. Not really rain, just precipitation from the clouds there. I stopped going to Lahaina after driving thru fires and getting stuck there overnight due to another fire. I always felt like I was the only one who talked about the fires. People seemed to take it all in stride like it was not a big deal. They got complacent and got used to fires happening. I never wanted to go thru that again so I stayed away since 2020. They thought they were ok when the fires were up on the mountainside. But this is the first time the fires roared down into town. They all got caught off guard due to years and years of fires never hitting that far down into the ocean’s edge. Of course, tourists kept coming assuming all is well since they never see locals reacting to regular fires.

The siren is not a call to evacuate. The siren is a call that something is happening and to seek information on that happening. In this case, I don't think the people that trigger the sirens had the information rather than a physical problem with the sirens themselves. Hawaii doesn't typically get wildfires which can threaten home/life. I've don't remember ever hearing a siren triggered for a fire. It's typically hurricane or tsunami type events where they use the sirens.

With so much debris and power lines lying on the ground, that was a warning sign right there that the town was a tinderbox, even without the wildfire in the distance. A fire could have started right where he was walking and lit up the town.

First off my prayers my heart felt prayers " to these brothers and sisters of America our neighbors not strangers by any means. I am deeply saddened on every aspect of this believe me I am from how it unfolded to the presidents visit and everything in between. Every state and city and township should have a complete understanding on how to treat and deal with any kind of disaster and successful or not be able to depend on Washington to with ( great speed) be there to assist ( immediately). Obviously neither of these things happened or are happening. I heard one group of private group has sent some portable trailer homes there great idea". Seems Washington could send a huge supply of new or used mobile homes over there to provide needed shelter for all these wonderful people asap. Again prayers and concern to everyone there God bless 🙏❤️

I appreciate this documentation of this disaster, but this guy's attitude is a part of the human problem that led to deaths. He's treating this as a spectacle to walk towards, with his only concern being to avoid the smoke. He does not consider that he could be caught by the very fast-spreading flames and killed.

As it was in the days of Noah. All the warnings were there in the sky and on the ground... Raging wildfire nearby, hurricane winds whipping around and so much tinder debris lying on the roadside. Why was no one thinking critically about that? This was the time to evacuate. Perhaps that is what he was doing? Assessing and documenting the situation to determine a way to evacuate?

    • @rumfordc

yet he lived. you're just looking for someone to be angry at because you know you contributed nothing at all. he had the best attitude: being outside, not being downwind, and not panicking, and documenting just how poor the public response was. his attitude created this video which just might save lives in the future.

Now that is something one should be thinking something is wrong with what happened instead of blaming the Government...blame yourselves for not getting the hell out of town. I mean seriously. And I just watched a video from a resident that clarified the HELP ISSUE...HE SAID THERE IS TONS OF HELP AND SUPPLIES BEING HANDED OUT and that the majority of interviews they are NOT BEING HONEST about just how much help is truly there!!!! Appears there are thieving of supplies by locals and much more going on that isn't being discussed but he said there is TONS OF AID THERE AND CONSTANTLY COMING IN!!!

2:16 in. ...did this downed tree block people from being able to escape via that road? heard some fire hydrants also were not sufficiently supplied with water. This came up in regards to 9/11...say fire hoses in cabinets of higher rise buildings were empty. I guess in California, some people hope to save their homes by constantly keeping water on them. I recall this from previous disasters. curious if cars were forced to use one route out of there.
