In this The Sky Is A Neighborhood guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song off of the Foo Fighter's Concrete And Gold album note-for-note.
The tuning is standard tuning.
The Foo Fighters create a very big sound on most of their songs with the benefit of having 3 guitar players. Because of that, most sections of the song have multiple guitar parts. The great thing is that even though you may be the only guitarist in your band, each section has a main guitar part that you can play and still sound close to the original recording. The other parts are usually doubling the main guitar part with different chord voicings or creating some sort of melodic layer.
"The Sky Is A Neighborhood" begins with the main chord progression played in an arpeggio picked style.
From there, that same progression moves to the verse with a very abrupt staccato feel to it.
The pre-chorus sees Dave Grohl's guitar part moving to a lower voiced set of chords which are mostly in open position while a second guitar part continues with the same chord voicings used in the verse. Over these chords guitarist Pat Smear plays a melody across the top two strings. This melody requires a pretty large stretch and will be heard a few times throughout the song.
There is one other major section of the song which could probably be considered the bridge. This bridge happens twice in the song. It contains a different chord progression than the previous ones and has a melodic guitar solo over it. The guitar solo is the same each time you hear the bridge.
