Mr. Pete, I too have been calling them Stubby drills for over 50 years. I've never had anyone not know what I was referring to. I've never ordered one, always made them as needed. Thanks for your effort in making and sharing these wonderful videos!
Making great progress Mr. Pete. I agree with Paul Jenkins. I got used to the light very quickly. This past winter I changed all my machine task lights to LED at 5000 Kelvin. It really helps older eyes see more clearly.
It's true that increasing scene lighting does help with loss of visual accomodation (e.g. presbyopia). Pupillary constriction increases depth of focus, just as it would in a camera lens. That said, the advantage isn't necessarily as important unless it's in first person. The camera usually has fewer problems maintaining focus than someone with presbyopia or IOL implants, and so long as the viewer can focus at the fixed distance of the monitor, they effectively inherit the abilities of the camera. While both are important, I think that contrast (i.e. depth and contour) is more effective at making clear video/photography than brightness alone. Lighting angle is a tool that's worth using.
Thanks for asking and getting the LED's, I'm good either way. You can drop a notch on the white balance or use a diffuser if you want. We all need more light in our lives...I'm usually a Stinker about such things but the quality isn't in the lighting as much as what you bring. A 1000 ways to do something in the shop, but there is Only 1 way Mr. Pete does it and always a pleasure to learn and have some fun. Who knew lady bugs like Quaker State...for a minute anyway. Come to think of it they do have that rancid smell of sulfur/paraffin to them. Good to know I was wrong about the oil and gear material. Great series so far, Thanks! BTW, never Boring in my book.
Be sure to tell your wife how lucky she is to have made a catch like you. You are a great blend of handy and funny. If I remember correctly those are two of the top qualities listed in the Man Book (1956 Edition) that women are looking for. You are an inspiration to all men. :-)
Great work MrPete! The LED is bright, but the camera seems to adjust fairly quickly. Fit a diffuser for the light if need be. This is an interesting project! See you in part 4.
That blue light, yuk!! Lotsa glare. You can hang some tracing paper in front of it to knock that down a bit. The old light has more red, warmer. So it is easier on my eyes. More like sunshine than that horrible LED stuff. Reminds me of: "We have a blue light special in aisle 13, Women's Combat Boots for $5.95!!" I love the little nuggets you throw in: HF hammer, oil soaked bugs, etc.... Can't skip around with that machining goodness sprinkled all through the video. Thanks, Professor Pete!!
That is terrible to hear, you will leave a fantastic legacy, all those minds and hearts you have touched, and will forever more with your shop videos. Thank you for sharing.
All your videos have had great lighting and camera angles. A moment or two after you compared the lights, I'd forgotten which was which. I think you should use whatever works best for you.
Sir, Absolutely flawless methodology adopted. Enjoyed every bit of your work in this Video. The only envy is the speed and perseverance shown. My best wishes to you and all the best for the future. Thanks. New Delhi, India.
Mr. Pete, I think the LED light is an improvement. It does appear to be daylight color temperature which give the blue cast. You can buy an orange gel which will make it match your other lights if you want.
Only item I really noticed was the color change with the brighter light of your Bridgeport but that actually allowed you to see the machine work better. Your old lighting may be natural light wave length compared to the higher intensity of the new light. Will let you work safer at your machine which keeps your head from getting to close while running. Which I’ve had to do to see things in poorly lite areas.
Like the detail definition of the LED, but not the glare. Don't know much about photography, but perhaps there is a filter that will reduce the glare while keeping the definition?
Lyle I like the LED's as said takes a little time to get used to. I went to LEDS in my work shop last winter and they make life easyier for old eyes (69) Mark
Great video Mr Pete. Not berating your work flow you are doing great work but i have found that turning a shaft to fit a bored hole is much easier. Therefore i would have bored slightly undersize and turned the part to fit.
I could hear the 3D printer running in the background a couple times in this video (I know the sound well as I now own a CR10 too) anxiously awaiting a foundry video where the pattern is 3D printed!
Thank you for another interesting video. The project is coming along nicely. I think I prefer the new lighting,- I am a few years younger - (nearly 70) - than you but my eyes are not as good, but neither is my hearing, so maybe I'm just old before my time!
Cosimo Marotta hmm would have gone the extra mile and purchased extra large piece of stock and extra machineing and made dovetail part of vise as a whole.....
Nice video. A ground surface would be nice for looks. Like your operation explanations. My LED lights have the option of adjusting the intensity and warmth. Got them 30 bucks each at the big membership store.
LED. 5000 Kelvin is where the Daylight film was calibrated to give true color. You video may have white balance. BUT led the LED will give true color. florescence burn with green tint unless you get the Daylight ones. In the old day you added a Pink filter to your lens to counter balance the florescence green tint. Another great Job
At first the LEDs seemed to much, but I quickly got used to it. You might need to alter the white balance in the camera if it's not already set to automatic...
LEDs aren't too bad, but I'd find some with a "warmer" color! Wonder how long it would have taken to cut that channel using Adam's "new" shaper! :) Enjoying this build!
Hi Mr. Pete. Just in case you were "testing" us ... You actually showed a slot drill and said that "an end mill" wont cut to centre. A slot drill is ground with offset cutting lands so that it will drill. Do I get extra points for spotting this ? Or am I being a smart arse and just adding to your dull cutter aggrivation ?
Mr. Pete. If the views are down for this video it has nothing to do with how good it is. But it looks like it's for people who want to know about this mill. I apologize if I'm wrong, but I didn't watch it.
Dull bits cause aggravation - "I broke my own rule...you can tell I'm aggravated" - well, thanks for showing us that even masters need to be reminded of why they make their rules.
Quite the enjoyable to watch project. On the jaws idea what about "stealing" the hardened jaws from a cheap low profile wobbly and thus useless drill press vise? I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for those sort of vises but as a jaws donor for this project I think those bits of junk might just find a good purpose.
I'm confused. If you have a mill, why make a lathe milling attachment? If you don't have a mill what use is instruction on making a mill attachment using a mill?
That's close to the snarky comment I deleted. :) I had the same question. Then I figured you could do the mill work on a friend's mill. Or, figure out a way to do the whole thing on the lathe. Maybe we can get our teacher to show us how to do that.
Being a retaired TV engineer, you have to go a long way to have too much lighting. Cameras can stop down its iris. Or you can add Neutral Density filters. Enjoy your videos!

Ah, come on. Hasn't it warmed up? You could have done most of that on your shaper! Got to exercise it once in a while or it will get stove up. And you know people like watching a shaper. 🙃
The fact that you do it on the fly speaks volumes about your ability and experience. More light is always better for your shop.
🤙🤙
Mr. Pete, I too have been calling them Stubby drills for over 50 years. I've never had anyone not know what I was referring to. I've never ordered one, always made them as needed. Thanks for your effort in making and sharing these wonderful videos!
Thank you for watching. And you are correct, if you told someone to hand you a screw machine bit, they would be clueless.
As always a great DIY'r video. We truly have a gem in our Mr Pete that is rare as "grits" in NYC!
Keep it up dear person.
Thank you very very much

My grandson picked out one of those dead blow hammers. I bought it for him as a toy, and it is doing good work in the shop.
lol
Mr Pete there is a great difference with the light the brighter the better
🤙🤙
Thread the dovetail pin in, & pin it. much Detter. Les England, grat lights, can't have to much light. Great videos enviable to watch.
I'm a fan of the new light.
I have used the harbor freight dead blows for many years, and not one issue with it.
Excellent video Mr. Pete.
🤙🤙
The new lighting looks good. Loving this series! Thanks, Mr. Pete! :-)
🤙

flat bottom drills, they make pete's rockin world go round :)

wow an oblong from lyle himself, im honoured :)
Great work MrPete! The LED is bright, but the camera seems to adjust fairly quickly. Fit a diffuser for the light if need be. This is an interesting project! See you in part 4.

Mr Pete ,another nice and easy video to watch .I really enjoy your material.thank you sir.

😂
Led looks fine. Might blow it out a little, but not too bad. Thanks for all you do Mr. P.
🤙
+1 for the LED. Very nice lighting from that.
If you want a good dead-blow hammer, try Proto or Trusty-Cook. Estwing also makes a few.
🤙
Mr Pete made a pun, LOL An interesting series sir.
Every Tubalcain day is a good day. I hope your OK, you seemed breathless a couple of times.
I am on my last legs
That is terrible to hear, you will leave a fantastic legacy, all those minds and hearts you have touched, and will forever more with your shop videos. Thank you for sharing.
As we get older we need more light LED's are great your channel is teaching me a lot can you show more setups etc
If you go through the the Play Lists with MrPete's MACHINE SHOP PROJECTS, and MACHINE SHOP TIPS, you can see all kinds of setups.
Thats over 500 videos and around 200 hrs I'm getting there
Spare time Well Spent!
I like your new LED light, I have a large one over my new lathe, it gives a sharper view of what's being cut.
🤙🤙
All your videos have had great lighting and camera angles. A moment or two after you compared the lights, I'd forgotten which was which. I think you should use whatever works best for you.
Thank you very much, read through the comments. Most people hate my new $200 worth of lights
Sir, Absolutely flawless methodology adopted. Enjoyed every bit of your work in this Video. The only envy is the speed and perseverance shown. My best wishes to you and all the best for the future. Thanks. New Delhi, India.
Thank you very much for watching, I am glad you like the videos. And you live on the other side of the world
I'd say its completely sufficient without the LEDs. With it, it looks overexposed.
Great series BTW, I'm liking it!
😂
Mr. Pete,
I think the LED light is an improvement. It does appear to be daylight color temperature which give the blue cast. You can buy an orange gel which will make it match your other lights if you want.
🤙🤙
Lighting is better. Good video. I like a new video every day much better than tv.
🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
Both lighting manners are good. I would opt for the LED, if you are not machining aluminum that is too shiny.
VERY nice video set. Love your work.
🤙
Mr. Pete great video! Lighting didn't matter to me, if you like it, use it. Thanks!
🤙
Only item I really noticed was the color change with the brighter light of your Bridgeport but that actually allowed you to see the machine work better. Coleen Lofgren kiii
LOL at Horror Freight. I'm stealing that one, Sir!
🤙
Everyone I know calls em stubby bits. Great video.
That's what they were called when I ordered mine.
Kind of makes you wonder why a guy would get "put off" by that name ;)
Triggered, by a name! lolol
Great video Mr Pete. Not berating your work flow you are doing great work but i have found that turning a shaft to fit a bored hole is much easier. Therefore i would have bored slightly undersize and turned the part to fit.
👌
I see what you are doing now. Great idea.
🤙
I could hear the 3D printer running in the background a couple times in this video (I know the sound well as I now own a CR10 too) anxiously awaiting a foundry video where the pattern is 3D printed!
Thank you very much you are in the minority
Thank you for another interesting video.
The project is coming along nicely.
I think I prefer the new lighting,- I am a few years younger - (nearly 70) - than you but my eyes are not as good, but neither is my hearing, so maybe I'm just old before my time!
I wish I was as young as you, LOL
Waiting for all other parts. I would have machined separate jaws letting vice structure as is.
Cosimo Marotta hmm would have gone the extra mile and purchased extra large piece of stock and extra machineing and made dovetail part of vise as a whole.....
Bright at first, but quickly get used to it. If you did not show the dark before nobody would think the new was too bright.
🤙🤙
It is bright, but like Randy said a camera adjustment would correct some of the glare
😂
Nice video. A ground surface would be nice for looks. Like your operation explanations. My LED lights have the option of adjusting the intensity and warmth. Got them 30 bucks each at the big membership store.
Mine were 20 bucks apiece. And I bought 10. Wish I had not. Look at the comments, most people hate them. I did not know they made a adjustable ones
LED. 5000 Kelvin is where the Daylight film was calibrated to give true color. You video may have white balance. BUT led the LED will give true color. florescence burn with green tint unless you get the Daylight ones. You are way beyond me
At first the LEDs seemed to much, but I quickly got used to it. You might need to alter the white balance in the camera if it's not already set to automatic...
Exactly what I was going to say, colour balance isn't quite right but looks good besides that
Part of that is camera adjusting the white balance. The brighter light is better. Maybe put a diffuser in front of the bulb.
Love from INDIA🙋
My orange H.F. deadblow continues to give great service after a decade of use.
👌
great job.now i have the answer to the mystery. LED is the way to go
👌
I know aggravation, I threw my dull wife away. She came back more aggravated. Great work.
lol
Do love me some horror freight for non-critical gitr done stuff!
🤙🤙
Nice project I made one similar found a vee in the bottom jaw to be a great benefit suggest do it now rather than later :-) lighting 'without'
🤙
Great vid, I like the led lighting.. 👍🏻
🤙🤙🤙
LEDs aren't too bad, but I'd find some with a "warmer" color! Wonder how long it would have taken to cut that channel using Adam's "new" shaper! :) Enjoying this build!
🤙
Light is a bit bright but a small adjust to the camera should fix that. Well done on the project.
👌
Ah yes. I remember those hot chips well. In my nose, in my mouth, my ears and down the shirt. We called it a fly cutter, I presume for that reason :)
lol
The LED's are better for me. But what works best for you is what really matters.
🤙
I like the old light... But it's about how you see it !
😂
thanks Professor Peterson, when you can"t go to sleep at night you can count your vices instead of sheep!
lol
Hogging out the vice body would have been a great use of Adam’s shaper
The lighting is better
Hi Mr. Pete.
Just in case you were "testing" us ...
You actually showed a slot drill and said that "an end mill" wont cut to centre.
A slot drill is ground with offset cutting lands so that it will drill.

Mr. Pete. If the views are down for this video it has nothing to do with how good it is. But it looks like it's for people who want to know about this mill. I apologize if I'm wrong, but I didn't watch it.
Thank you
"Holy Mackerel, that's smoky".
Smoky Mackerel. 😀
lol
The new light seems a bit bright to me, perhaps some tinkering with the setup.
😂
THANK YOU...for sharing. Without the LED.
😂
Did you just beat your new dead-blow there to wind up the surface plate fanatics? BTW, I've just dedicated my new tap follower project video to you.
🤙🤙thank you, I watch the video it was very good
Why wouldn't you sharpen your endmills?
Dull bits cause aggravation - "I broke my own rule...you can tell I'm aggravated" - well, thanks for showing us that even masters need to be reminded of why they make their rules.
lol
LED seems to have better contrast.
Yes
Quite the enjoyable to watch project. On the jaws idea what about "stealing" the hardened jaws from a cheap low profile wobbly and thus useless drill press vise? I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for those sort of vises but as a jaws donor for this project I think those bits of junk might just find a good purpose.
Good idea
I wish I had your experience!!
You soon will
Lyle, since you are a tool "collector" such as i .. im suprised you dont have a d bit cutter to re-sharpen all those end mills you have :)
I had one at the high school and learned to hate it. Also requires a surface grinder which I do not have. I own 500 milling cutter's brand new
i can understand that... but, its also another thing to do a video on !
Does your mill have variable speed
No
The LEDs are much better - keep using them!
🤙
i mean it looks better without LED light, the LED´s changes also the colors
😂
Thanks for sharing sir..
🤙
The old way, I agree 100% way too much glare.
😂
Keep to the old lighting please. LED is too harsh.
😂
LED's seem to be much better
👌👌
The LED lights seem to be a bit too much...
😂
Please use LED lighting... thank you.
Thank you, I am shocked at how many people hated the new lighting
I prefer the non-LED lighting.
😂
Old way old lighting is better in that close up situation
😂
I'm confused. If you have a mill, why make a lathe milling attachment? If you don't have a mill what use is instruction on making a mill attachment using a mill?
john1945xxxxxx HECK- WHY BOTHER MAKING A MILLING ATTACHMENT AT ALL- WHY NOT JUST BUY A MILLING ATTACHMENT?!!! THIS IS AN EXERCISE!!!

I like the old lighting better the new one is too bright
😂
I prefer the LED setup...
😀😀😀
"Tell me in the comments which lighting you prefer." I believe I heard in the background a can of worms being opened.
You are right, I should never have said that. Look through the comments
Lighting the old way but if & when high lighting a scribed line or an indicator maybe both lights for a brief period to high light.
😂
To bright with the LED
😂
😁
🤙
👍
👌
Being a retaired TV engineer, you have to go a long way to have too much lighting. Cameras can stop down its iris. Or you can add Neutral Density filters. Enjoy your videos!
Thank you, it’s good to hear from someone knows what he’s talking about
I would have bored it on the lathe
😂

I was very disappointed when he advertise life insurance. Life insurance is always, and I emphasizealways A fraud
I like the old dark way. Do not like the LED.
😂
No need to send a reply my question was answered in this video
👌
Old light.
😂
LED!
😀😀
LED looks better
🤙🤙🤙
Don’t care for the led’s. Frustration is showing a bit maybe 2 cups instead of 2 1/2 still good job. 👍☕️
