The Tragic Story Of The Greenpeace Ship That Was Blown Up

  • Aukland Harbour, New Zealand. July 10th 1985. French navy combat men place two mines against the hull of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior. At ten minutes to midnight, the bombs explode, sinking the ship and killing photographer Fernando Pereira.
    The French government is desperate to hide the truth. The truth about the bombing. The truth about nuclear weapons testing in the Pacific ocean. So desperate it will go to any lengths to silence its opponents.
    The Boat and The Bomb is a Greenpeace International film about international espionage, government cover-up and the nuclear arms race. It's a story which has disturbing parallels with today's War on Terror. It's a story which won't go away.

      @@peace-now The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy involving dozens of warships. Two days later, heading for occupied France to effect repairs, Bismarck was attacked by 16 Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one scored a hit that rendered the battleship's steering gear inoperable. In her final battle the following morning, the already-crippled Bismarck was engaged by two British battleships and two heavy cruisers, and sustained incapacitating damage and heavy loss of life. The ship was scuttled to prevent her being boarded by the British, and to allow the ship to be abandoned so as to limit further casualties. Most experts agree that the battle damage would have caused her to sink eventually. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_battleship_Bismarck
      On May 26, the ship was sighted and crippled by British aircraft, and on May 27 three British warships descended on the Bismarck, inflicting heavy damage. By mid-morning, the pride of the German navy had become a floating wreck with numerous fires aboard, unable to steer and with her guns almost useless because she was listing badly to port. Soon, the command went out to scuttle the ship, and the Bismarck quickly sank. Of a 2,221-man crew, only 115 survived. www.history.com/this-day-in-history/bismarck-sunk-by-royal-navy
      Also verified by James Camerons dive team who studied the wreck of the Bismarck in great detail and said, "For the ship to have sunk with the speed that it did, it would have had to have also had scuttling, in addition to whatever battle damage was being inflicted by the British, and probably the scuttling played a very large part when it sank".

    The French lost their cool, though I’m afraid they never really had it to begin with. They could have taken control of the Rainbow Warrior with minimal force (not assaulting the crew) and impounded it while arresting or detaining the crew until the test was over. That never seemed to cross their mind and I believe it because the state has a monopoly on violence, the state therefore turns to violence habitually to solve its perceived problems. The whole thing is a lesson in how sick this world is.

    • @brunol-p_g8800
      @brunol-p_g8800 9 месяцев назад

      The whole thing was due to the then new boss of French secret services, who wanted to prove himself, after a failed retaliatory operation by the last boss of the secret services, following the bombings that killed more than 300 US Marines and 50 French paratroopers in Beirut. He ended up launching this operation in the very back of the French government. The only one who knew about it was the one who gave permission for it, the then defence minister and he did it in the back of the whole government: the president, the prime minister, no one knew about it.
      They talk about it in this 3rd episode on the history of the French secret services since WW2 (you can add English subtitles in the options):

      In may this year I attended the Oostende Voor Anker boat festival as part of the Dunkirk Little Ship fleet. On the 10 May we attended a ceremony commemorating 100 year since HMS Vindictive blocked the harbour in WWI. This stopped German submarines leaving port, for years I passed the Bow of the ship as I locked in but did not know the history behind it. The bow has been moved to a position in the outer harbour and a jetty built to it.
      The British Ambassador attended the ceremony together with the British Legion and many Belgian dignitaries, we later entertained the British Legion guys aboard the DLS and listened to some great stories that got better as the grog flowed.
      I wonder can you give me details of the WWII operation you were talking of.

I still eat the meat from the mink whales that we hunt here with strict quotas, knowing the ocean need to be harvested with sense and no animals or fish are more worth then another. In some senses during their anti nuclear operational patrol in French eyes the NZ frigates flying the the RNZN battle ensign and engaged in outright electronic warfare with French P-2 Neptunes had in a sense declared war against France and arguably greatly lessesned the scale of the final atmospheric French tests to a couple of triggers. In 1973 the French Neptunes were in 1973 as well equipped as the USN/RAAF Orions (Australia second a/s surveillance squadron operated Neptunes until 1982 the year Argentine flew its own Neptune, Trackers and Sea KIngs against the Task Force). According to Norman Polmars book on the US Nuclear Navy 2016 the Argentine P-2 Neptunes were percieved by the RN as the most dangerous threat to the RN with the two 209 subs. The French government claimed in 1985 that the actions of the NZ Kirk Government and the NZ Navy in sending its frigates into the bomb test, outer exclusion zone , as a protest, presence and disruption of the French governments montioring of the area and its control with sophisticated surveillance and anti sub aircraft. This New Zealand navy activity was one of the 'provocations' was led the French Government to send its Navy and intelligence service to mine the Greepeace vesel Rainbow warrior in Auckland harbour in 1985 ( M. King . NZ since 1945. Hodder & Stoughton. 1988 Auckland). It would also have to be defined as a naval attack on NZ and it's foreign policy. This mission put 11-49 French agents into NZ and nuclear submarines were deployed in NZ waters probably in an attempt to rescue the captured French naval agents (' Beat to the Beehive' 'Ross Meurant, former National MP, NZ police detective) . Meurant made the point the NZ Government and PM David Lange did anything but, point out to New Zealanders the scale and outrageous big stick the French, were waving at disarmed New Zealnd, with some support from Thatcher and Reagan in the months following the mining of the Rainbow Warrior. The French admitted to 11 agents in NZ. according to retiried NZ poltical scientist Keith Ovenden who was living in France at the time , and covering the issue for some intenational media in 1985, the French actually put 49 agents into New Zealand at the time.
