    I have 2 of the Spybotics and it was a great fun to battel each other. Sadly, the software and hardware didn't kept up with the time. Lego should bring back a similar products, they were fun and educational.

      Yes! If this video does well we definitely want to get a second one! I agree that LEGO doesn't really have anything like this in their lineup today.

      Totally, the control and programing coil be done via app. If they'd re release the old sets with minor upgrades I'd buy them instantly.

      I've been thinking about DIYing a completely refreshed PCB that fits in the new housing.
      It could have proper audio and microphone, better sensors, even a tiny camera - and make this an actual spying-capable Spybot!
      If I get anywhere with that you'll hopefully hear about it :D

    Maaan I remember drooling over these in the catalogue. They didn't even had them in stores.

    • @NonsenseWars
      @NonsenseWars  3 года назад +4

      Yeah, I don't remember seeing them in stores either. I think they were definitely rare, at least in the US.

    For those who still want to play with missions, i've tried something yesturday to connect to your spybot with a modern computer: You need a RS232 adaptater, and a virtual Machine with Wxp !
    It worked pretty well, i'm posting a video soon about this !

    • @NonsenseWars
      @NonsenseWars  2 года назад +2

      Good info! We have tried using an RS232 adapter with some other old LEGO hardware, but we haven't tried doing anything with VMs.

      Since you have comments disabled on your video, I'm asking you here - is there a way to connect to your Spybot without the need for a VM? The Spybotics software installs and runs properly on my Windows 10 PC, but crashes upon clicking a mission icon on the map.

      I was able to do this for a MISB 1.0 and 2.0 lego RCX. My 2.0 RCX won’t power on and i’ve looked at the motherboard, but it’s spotless, no corrosion. I wonder if it’s the buttons. But my 1.0 works, and i upgraded the firmware by making a windows xp VM and tethering the usb IR tower to it through my physical computer. I couldn’t connect my first ir tower even with an rs233 adapter because apparently it needed firmware and the 1.0 program didn’t have an option for the usb tower. So after looking at the 2.0 iso, i decided to buy the 2.0 set and it’s up and running programmable. But i wish i could fix my 2.0 brain brick…

      @@NonsenseWarswould you be interested if i reached out for help? I bought two mint sets, the 1.0 and 2.0 RCX, but my 2.0 brain brick won’t power on even though there is zero corrosion. I examined the motherboard myself and it was clean, but it still won’t power on. Is it the buttons?

    I loved my Spybot and still think about it every now and then! Sadly, either I didn't quite get the missions (I remember getting frustrated when the Spybot moved on its own. "It's spy-technology, damnit! Why doesn't it work properly?!" 😂) or I couldn't set up well enough. It was still much fun to play with!

    How did you even get the idea to make a video about these 20 years after they came out? 😂 Yours is like one of 2 videos on YT about these 😂
    Seeing the software intro gave me a hit of nostalgia for sure. I had the purple Shadowstrike when I was a kid; bought it when it was already outdated (Mindstorms 2.0 just came out iirc) from a small shop stuffed to the brim with (many outdated) toys. It was the only set they had and it immediately caught my attention.
    I sadly sold it again a few years later, but it was a really cool thing for sure.

      We actually review quite a few older Technic sets, check them out: ruclips.net/p/PLAE1G877Xt9R1oqVwYOMccPahkIwo2XHE... a lot of them are indeed sets that we had or wanted in the past!

    Nostalgia just hit hard with this video. I'm lucky to say I still have all of mine even after 20 years. I really want to try out the different missions now again, haha.

    • @NonsenseWars

      Do they still work? We wanted to do a part two with different bots and two-player missions, but all our bots seemed to have trouble talking to each other, and we never figured it out.

      Gigamesh is the best one :P We bought two others to try and do a follow up, and if you ask me they don't work as well!
      I do actually watch LTT, but I didn't catch it in this video o_O I actually thought about doing a video on my current build, but I dunno what I can contribute that other creators haven't.

    Hi. I just purchased them (2 different sets of Spybotics) online from a third-party vendor.
    Is there only one CD-ROM for all 4 sets? or each has a different CD-ROM?
    Would the software work on windows Edge? If not, is there a way to make it work? Is it possible to work with it only with the remote?
    Any comment would be much appreciated.

    • @NonsenseWars
      @NonsenseWars  2 года назад +2

      Hi! As far as I know:
      a) There is only one CD for all four sets. The CD has instructions for all four models.
      b) Windows Edge is a browser. It definitely won't work there. If you meant later versions of Windows (7, 8, 10), I'm not sure; we did not try. We did not have much success running other vintage LEGO software on newer Windows though.
      c) You can drive the vehicles with the remote without the CD - you just can't do the challenges. For some models the controls may be flipped by default.

    I bought a bunch of these, i think Lego really missed the obvious appeal for kids of having remote control, configurable, robots that can fight each other. Robot Wars was huge, but somehow that purpose seems totally overlooked by Lego. my son and I have spent many happy hours building then fighting these robots.

    • @jimlewis1

      and generally the USB/RS232 convertor matters as to which brand you use. Some work, some don't so if you have issues try an alternate vendor

    • @NonsenseWars
      @NonsenseWars  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I suspected this as well, especially with no-name adapters from eBay... that being said, haven't messed with the dongle too much: the problems we had with doing the two-Spybot missions seemed to be more around the two Spybots communicating with each other.
