I was diagnosed with acute lymphatic disease in 1972 at Roswell Buffalo ny cancer center with a 0 percent chance of living he showed up by himself with a acoustic guitar and played for a very small group of us all I remember was was his boot clicking on the floor all tithe family’s were given his 45 and to this today it’s apart of me. Then when I found out he passed from leukemia I was devastated , I lost a piece of me to this day I weep when I hear this song I’m just glad they sent me Angle to help save me and I’ve learned how to play this song on guitar which gives comfort

Though most people probably think this song refers to a guy losing his girl, Randy actually wrote this as a love song to his father, who died in a car crash when he was just a boy. When I found that out, it just doubled the impact of that song on me.

Getting a Christopher Cross vibe from his voice. Very similar. Man, this is a beautiful song. I left my son with his mother for two years when he was just 5 to move out of state for personal life reasons and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. I moved back after 2 years as I had always planned to do but it did cause some distance between us a little. We love each other more than ever now but I heard this song shortly after moving away and I had to pull the car over to just sit and bawl my eyes out. The lyrics hit me so hard right in the heart. RIP Randy. You wrote such a beautiful song!

Very honest words Greg, no easy to path to walk.....did it myself but like yourself came out the other side a better man . But just listening to the words... " Without closing the door " ...really cuts to the bone, it implies that the person leaving didn't care what he left behind....which as we know....is not true, but try tell that to a heartbroken child & family. Brilliant song. RIP Randy❤

I just listened to this 45 the other day. Whenever I listen to my 45s and 33s, it is like I am traveling in a time machine, and it takes me back to the year the song was released. I always associate songs with where I was at that point in my life, what age I was when the song was released. It really makes me sad that music will never be as good as this. The 70s, 80s, and 90s were amazing decades in music. Now, not so much.

As for Kacey Musgraves, I am not a fan of pop country. Nope. Can't do it. I am a old school, outlaw country loving kinda gal! Gimme some Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Hank Sr., Hank III, Loretta Lynn, and the rest of the OGs, and I am just fine! I just can't get into that pop country. Remembering Randy VanWarmer born on March 30, 1955. He was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. His biggest success was the pop hit, "Just When I Needed You Most". This reminds me of the last ever caravan holiday i went on in 1979. The caravan in question was old, but not really cold. When it rained however you could hear the loud roaring sound of it on the roof. Very soon after that holiday, this track came out and graced the charts, in September of the above-mentioned year. It's a year i'll never forget.

My x wife took my 3 boys out of my life 19 years ago. And the pain of losing my boys never dies. This song sometimes makes me o.k with it. Through huge emotional loss brings a empty life. Almost like this song takes me to the day , the faces, and feelings.

This was my mother's song when she was older, suffering from dementia (including memory loss), and my brothers and sister rarely came over to see her.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, the the reality of this song fits several scenarios.
