I’m so sorry your pillow gave you such a fit during the quilting process! But, on the other hand, it’s so comforting to know that even such an experienced quilter has days when the wheels seem to come off the wagon when working on a project. ❤️ The pillow is absolutely beautiful, and your Starberry line is just stunning! 😍

Oh Cory what a time you had with your pillow! It is heart warming to hear even a professonal can have days like I do sometimes. Blessings to you and a beautiful and imformative tutorial as usual!
Cory I sew clothing as well as quilts and a lesson I learned many years ago that has helped me in marking is when a bar of soap from the shower gets too little to use I take it to my sewing room and keep it in a box. The fine little edges on the soap work wonderful and a marker for dark fabrics and no chance of them discoloring fabric. I have used soap slivers for years for marking as well as traditional water soluible blue markeing pens like you were talking about. Give it a little try sometime.

Corey I love your blocks and your pillow is beautiful. Something that changed my life when making pillows is Sherri McConnell’s You Tube tutorial on how to make a hidden zipper back instead of an envelope back. I hated making envelope backs and will never do it again. Sherri uses ByAnnie zippers which are wider and you don’t even need a zipper foot to install.

We all have those days when nothing goes right. I just recently purchased The Little Rebel by Grace Frame to use as a free motion quilting machine. The first time I used it, everything was great. The second time is just the opposite. I couldn't get the bobbin to wind correctly, took me close to an hour to figure it out, then the needle would not stay threaded. I finally changed the size of my needle. I then had to line my needle up, beside this machine has a round needle like a longarm. After I finally got is stitching correctly. I didn't want to do any quilting. Came back the next day and everything was great.
Love your star block. I picked up everything to make Deerly Loved and forgot the border fabric and binding. I will be going back over the weekend to get it.

Wow! Murphy's Law was certainly at work. I have days like that and when it happens I just leave everything as it, and come back to it a couple days later and in the meantime, I just cut out pieces for the next project. I love the pillow and I will be making one just like that with my Starberry fabrics. It will co-ordinate nicely with the Cuddle up sampler quilt. Thanks for the free pattern and video.

My spools of thread (when threading bobbin), have gone ballistic if I put them on the spool holder with the cut-out (for securing thread tail) on top - the thread catches and spool goes airborne. I usually use cones so I forget to check this for spools. What an ordeal you had! Taping the guide onto walking foot - genius!

What a beautiful pillow. Maybe that pillow could be called Adventure Star. We've all had projects go awry for no apparent reason. The right attitude makes all the difference.
A couple of suggestions: you could have marked the back, painters tape works well too. I don't buy expensive marking pens. I get a pack of Crayola Ultra Washable fine tip markers. It has all the colors and washes right out when I'm finished. The grands head straight for Grandma's markers when they come. ❤😊

    Long comment…so much to say…
    1. Great surprise having Corey pop-up on “humpday”. Love my Saturday videos. This was a special treat.
    2. I use the Moda info you shared all the time. I check skews and more often it’s to confirm Bella Solid colors for ordering but also mixing. Ex. Reds. geranium, scarlet, etc. It really seems to help me.
Tip: cut a piece/scrap of your solids and add sticker to back - name/skew. You can use these to audition colors and use with a color wheel. It’s been very helpful because I too seem to overthink which at times can get discouraging. It’s a skill that has to develop, we just have to give ourselves grace and keep trucking along.
    3. I’m not current participating in MB5, but never say never. I really love the quilt block designs this year. Some of the best ever. We need to remember to be sure and refer back to those block designs. One block repeated would be an amazing quilt, or two, three, etc….possibilities are endless.
    4. Love that you are real and just honest. Your audience can relate and we love that. It’s like we are sewing and chatting with a friend.
    5. I am smitten with Cali and Co and honestly want a bolt of every print and maybe two of the low volumes.
    A girl can dream….
    6. Idea - how about a RUclips live where we can ask submit questions “real time” chatting with you.
    7. Have you ever considered a Patreon group? I really enjoy the one I am in with Sherri. Just something to ponder on.
Your Flower Mill collection is what started my quilting journey. Thank you for inspiring us all!
PS. Cali and Co Tshirt design. Hint hint. 😊

What a great comment! I'm going to be sharing more mid-week videos this summer so keep any eye for them. The Moda Blockheads archives are a wealth of great blocks...so handy to have those to refer back to. I'm excited for Cali & Co. to hit shops later this year...it's going to be so much fun---I can't wait to sew along with everyone during the Cali & Co. mystery BOM! I've debated about a RUclips live but am not sure how our wifi would cooperate.... =) I haven't considered a Patreon group---what happens in the group...I'm clueless about that!

I guess we all have those nuisance days from time to time 😂
I use an old bar of soap to mark white lines on a black fabric. It works just great. Keep the sharp sliver that you get left with at the end of a bar. You'll be surprised how good it works. An Amish lady taught me that a while ago.

I hadn't heard of the soap trick before...that's a great suggestion (I'm going to have to tuck that suggestion away). I also have a hera marker that would have been another great option that I thought about *after my pillow was completed.

Beautiful pillow and I love the colors and fabrics you chose.
With your blue Dritz marker, you could have marked your lines on the white backing and quilted from the back to save you from all that trouble. I know that’s not the traditional method, but it would have been fine. Sometimes we get locked into doing something a certain but looking at all the problems you experienced, this would have saved you from all that stress. Just my 2 cents!

You are exactly right about getting stuck with a certain thought of how to do things. I realized after my pillow top was completely done, that I could have just used my hera marker to mark the top....that thought didn't even enter my mind. LOL

Great pillow story. I’ve had things like needle or thread breakage happen when the thread (Aurifil) has not been wound on the spool properly during the manufacturing process. Sometimes spools of threads are duds just like sometimes needles fresh out of the package are duds. Glad your pillow turned out to be beautiful. I like to use a hera marker for marking grids. I don’t know if you would have been able to see hera lines on the black fabric.

    Another inspiring Corey video!
I love this block! I'm currently making a downsized version of Starry Midnight Clear & stopped in the middle of that to make this block. I'm done with the block but am waiting, impatiently, to turn it into a pillow. I need to make sure I calculated the fabric yardage correctly for my smaller version before I cut the outer borders for the pillow. I would love a full quilt of this block but my flying geese always come out wonky so it would be a challenge.
I am loving sewing with your Starberry fabrics. Red, white & black is one of my favorite colorways and the reds in this collection along with the sketchy prints are perfection 👌, like gum 😂 (since I know you're a fan, I'm thinking you will appreciate my FRIENDS reference 😉)
