Beautiful reaction. Actually, this is a very sad song. Regarding "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the mainland to the Isle of Anglesey where Ren and Joe lived. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs. "How to Be Me," "Freckled Angels" and his latest release, "Suic*de," are specifically dedicated to Joe. Some people have claimed that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, that is misinformation according to some Brighton residents.
Ren recently posted some background on his relationship with Joe and the tragic suicide. Ren explained that he got a call from his friend Ella around 3 am saying that Joe was the Menai Bridge, He’d been on the phone with her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. Ren went out on foot attempting to get to Joe while trying to reach him on the phone. Just minutes before Ren got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. The Coast Guard started a search to no avail. Ren, friends, and volunteers unsuccessfully searched the shoreline for ten days; Joe’s body was never recovered.
Ren’s and Chinchilla’s live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it more given my daily struggles. Although, losing one’s best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable.
I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.

Isn’t it funny how those of us who are labeled as “unstable or mentally ill” are the ones with such compassion for life and such emotion for describing it that we feel it in our bones, opposed to those they call “normal” who have no emotional state to something as beautiful as this.. At what point did life decide it wanted us to LIVE backwards? Because that’s just EVIL.. This is why I drown myself in liters of alcohol and Baptist myself daily in a pool full of liquor, so I can “feel normal” yet it leaves me like a tree in autumn and detaches itself from me making my depression grow in tainted soil… Sending my blessings to any and everyone ❤

Please treat yourself to a lighthearted fun one, like Ren busking on a sunny street with The Big Push: I Shot the sheriff/road to Zion/hip-hop or Bongo Bong or throw back rap like What You Want, and, oh yeah, Ren & Sam Thompkins busking. this song is about rens friend joe who sadly commited, and in an interview with knox Ren said the only reason he didn’t take his life is because he saw what it did to joes family and the people around him and he couldn’t imagine putting people through that no matter how much he was in
This song was written about/for Ren's best friend who unfortunately ended his life -as explained in his latest release, Su!cide.
I believe this live version was filmed on location of the bridge that his friend, Joe, jumped from. 😪
@Peter2801W Its the Menai suspension bridge where Joe jumped. Ren has said so himself in interviews and mentions in suicide about how they never found his body cause he jumped off the bridge. the town is actually called Menai Bridge, it overlooks the menai strait and washes out into the ocean but the bridge is where he jumped, not some balcony

Yes I heard that rens best friend ended his life with suicide and this song haunts me in away that helps me cope with my own thoughts and emotions and I can relate to past relationships
