I really enjoy your videos. It would be great to see how you deal with fixing problems in existing conditions (i.e. Correcting a slope in a ceiling with mud) and applying mud in very tight spaces over Windows and doors in older renovations where replacing, say existing plaster with drywall is not an option due to cost of other considerations.
Also fixing previously botched work would be interesting

Good video. There’s SO many varieties and brands of mud. Never heard of lightweight taping mud here in the states. But then I got out of new construction and into just smaller remodels and repairs for the last 15 years. I used to run the full set of taping tools but now the only thing I own is a banjo and a 10 inch mud box and pump.

great video. i do patching for an hvac company so its all small stuff, and i have settled on quickset and all purpose too. it allows me to tape and coat in a day and not have to come back to do another coat, just come back and sand and paint and im done.
I actually use alot of 5 minute mud, mixed in a pan with a dril powered paint mixer, for the very small jobs i do its the fastest method. i have found the 5mn too fast for taping however.

Really cool! It’s nice to learn new things! Here in Honolulu, me and my guys keep it simple. All purpose for the tape, and plus 3 for the rest. I never use all purpose to coat because it’s so hard to sand. Plus 3 is easier to work with. And the quick jobs we use 5 or 20 min as well as plus 3. Not to complicated.

    Gold.
My notes for anyone else since the information density here is off the charts (thank you):
Filling gross voids and other prep (e.g. mesh tape over nasty patches)
    - Use a SETTING mud so it doesn’t shrink
    - Synko Concrete Fill
    - Hamilton Ultra-Fill
    - Both have some ‘soft’ filler, like Perllite
    20 minute quick-setting mud
    - Similar to above
    - Mesh tape work, stuff that you don’t care if it cracks
    - Mostly for in-and-out-in-a-day or for deep fills
    - Don’t plan on being able to sand
    Taping
    - Lite Taping
    - Coats horrible, sands horrible
    - But loaded with glue so it STICKS
    All-Purpose
    - Lite
    - Certainteed Lite All-purpose
    - Synko Lite Line
    - USG Plus 3
    - ProForm Lite*Blue
    - You _CAN_ tape with it, but not as good as a regular mud
    - TAILGATE WARRANTY
    - OK for inside corners and taping in a pinch
    - Not too bad to sand
    - Heavy
    - USG Sheetrock Green Lid (All Purpose)
    - ProForm Black Lid (All Purpose)
    - Hamilton Red Dot
    - Very Sticky, Very Strong, but a bear to sand
    Finish Mud
    - Certainteed Lite Finishing
    - Synko Classic Finish
    - Beadex Lite Topping
    - ProForm TOPPING
    - USG Topping
    - DON’T use for covering steel beads
    - DO use for good, bubble-free first coats
    - VERY easy to sand: skip the 120 - it will scratch the heck out of it
    Small Job:
    - Mesh tape and quick-set on FLATS and BUTTS
    - Paper tape and All-Purpose for Inside corners
    - Quick-set for Corner Beads
    - First coat with All-Purpose
    - Finish coat with All-Purpose
    Large Job:
    - Concrete-fill for deep patches and pre-fill
    - Taping Mud and Paper tape for taping (strongest, longest lasting)
    - Finish Mud for all else

Where I work in Ontario, we only use all purpose and we always use steel beads if we can. We use vinyl for bullnose, half bead, and splayed. Steel is strong and you can make them straight if the framing is wonky.

I moved to Michigan from Ontario in 1999. When I moved, Michigan was a head in the mud game and had lightweight Plus 3 as opposed to where I lived in Central Ontario where we were still mudding all coats with All Purpose. I used to hate sanding until I moved to Michigan. I hadn't realized that Canada had since surpassed the US.

LOL, i used floor patch (left over from a floor tile job) for deep fill around a couple spots on my ceiling drywall. better then buying a bag of concrete type stuff i'm only going to use a little bit of. floor patch is just plaster that doesn't dry quite as fast and is a little easier to sand because of the extra stuff they put in it to make it less prone to cracking

In my local commercial trade we use All Purpose for taping and first coast, and Lite, or Plus 3, for second and skim coat. Don't know where you heard we only have all purpose. But yes, it is heavier. And the extra glue in it helps create a solid base for your top coats.

I’ve noticed The advertising tends to be intentionally misleading just to get sales. Every product at Home Depot says easy sand when really only one type (plus 3) is actually easy to sand. Also the words all purpose is super misleading. But each product does have its place, and once you figure out what it is then you’re good to go

I just used a setting mud for the first time and loved it. I am doing a bathroom and wanted a mould-resistant mud which I can only get in a 90-minute, M2 CGC. I have always used multi-purpose low-dust mud because I was afraid of the mixing process for setting muds and it is convenient. I guess now that I have done a couple of rooms I am a bit more comfortable with the process and the mixing, getting the consistency right, isn't as daunting.
I am doing a few rooms and repairs at my daughter's house, but I have to do my whole house, so I can use all that I have learned doing hers. lol
A video that would be nice is how to finish around a tub surround. I just installed a Maax direct-to-stud surround and tub and while there are videos showing the installation, I haven't seen one on how to finish the wall after installation. I drywalled around it and I am going to use silicone caulk with 1/4 cove moulding for the finish between the wall and tub/surround. It seemed like the easiest and most logical way to do it.

Here in Newfoundland, most plasterers I've found use CGC All Purpose, either the white buckets, or boxes, or beige. I've used CGC beige for everything basically my whole plaster career, only since I started working with a restoration company do we use quickset sheetrock 20 in some cases. Not to say I've never seen a problem with it, but never an issue that can't be solved with a mud touch up, or in a pinch, one-time (drydex, the pink stuff) if what I'm patching has been painted already.

I use sheetrock "quickset" for patches and big fills. Vinyl beads, I just prefer working with them and first coat with them is quickset mud. All Purpose for everything else. I've had 2 joints crack in 5 years so it does the job. I typically just use tape for joints unless it's like a small bathroom or kitchen that I have the time to do 2 coats in a day, then it's mesh and quickset. For the all purpose, I just thin it down to whatever consistency I need. I've had a few pro tapers tell me they just use all purpose, nothing else and maybe a couple get into the weeds on all the other stuff.

Ben - I think that I have watched most of your drywall vids and have learned so much. Thanks for taking the time to make these - you have a real talent for this type of thing, both the construction and video documentary! As a semi-retired guy in SoCal who has been tackling more extensive home projects I believe that I have found an issue with topping compound, Westpac GreenDot in particular. I had been using Westpac RedDot all purpose for taping and filling, and then finishing off with GreenDot topper. Yes the topper sands so easily but the GreenDot leaves a very powdery film when finished, even when wiped off just before priming. I have noticed that the primer adhesion seems to be very lacking when using this topper an now use Easysand 45 for taping and filling and All Purpose RedDot for finishing and this seems to work the best for me. Any thoughts on this issue and if its common to all toppers?

However informative this video is on which drywall compound to use for which situation there is room for more education. When I looked up the same question in French the dry wallers were more thorough in advising on dust control, actual ingredient lists and that quick set compounds are actually Plaster of Paris with varying amounts of aggregates to delay your set time. That’s why the compound doesn’t shrink. The more home owners more about what their dealing with the less likely they are to make mistakes.

It’s interesting how people do things differently in different regions. I guess we all get good at doing things with the materials we have. Here in New England, the guy that does all my taping uses nothing but USG “green lid” AP and a 6” knife. No trowel. VERY minimal sanding. Everything is flat. Corners are sharp and straight. There may be a better combination of muds to use, but he does a fantastic job with what he’s given.

TO those that are still confused. You need at least 2 types of mud if you install drywall... "Medium" and "light". Heavy for filling gaps less then an inch i believe. Medium is for taping corners and large swaths that hide a ridge, light is for "hiding" the medium spread you used to smooth out a height difference. the wider and shallower it is the spread is, the less noticeable it'll be. But you can't use the light mud only for that large spread because it'll crack over time possibly, hence you use medium as a "filler" to reduce the risk of cracking. That's what I get from it anyway.

The "aggregate" you mention with Concrete Fill should be clarified. It has glass fibres that strengthen the compound after it sets off so it's stronger than your given setting type compound.
When I heard you say aggregate, I immediately thought of the heavier texture mixes, so I figured I would contribute a bit to clear things up.

I have noticed that the mud is thinner straight out of the box. Most of our mud here is unworkable until you add water. Only our taping mud comes a bit thinner. I will have to pick up some mud next time I'm in the states to do a comparison.

Thanks for going over all the materials and their applications. What would you recommend I use on a 90 year old house with plaster and lath walls. I wanted to smooth out some areas by doing a skim coat. I'm in Hamilton Canada. Thanks for all your videos they are very helpful

You won't find it if your looking for taping mud...ask for joint compound

I'm doing my house now and I just use heavy all purpose for everything. For taping and skimming I just thin it down with water. I just didn't want to deal with having lots of different muds. I did buy one bag of durabond to prefill some joints that I was nervous about though

I would recommend going into the different types of hot muds. Sheetrock 90/45/... is very different than durabond 90/45/... I use both and have read that durabond should be used in several usecases including pre-filing in new wood stud installs and bathrooms. I prefer sheetrock 90 for big fills on retrofit installs as it's lighter and seems to have longer working time. Durabond has amazing adhesion and strength.
I'm not sure but I think that durabond is similar to plaster.
Regarding box stores, be careful as they often don't sell finishing mud. Most sell "machine mud" which I think is pretty good for finishing.

machine mud is a finishing light weight mud that is good at leaving no bubbles. My favorite for skim coating machines or not.

Alot of People forget about the Location factor, The Weather and temperature of a city or Province/State are what manufacturers have to keep in mind also. Most places in the states Have a Higher temp so they require more mold resistance. Here in CA where its colder we can get away with Light muds and Less Dense materials.

I'm a Drywall Taper in Ontario. We use similar products here. I always go with CGC mud. Sheetrock 90, 45, and 20. I usually prefill with 45, use CGC taping mud ( A Green Box), then pending on size of job i will first coat butt joints and beads with Sheetrock 45 or 90, then all purpose CGC mud ( Red Box). But its similar to what was mentioned in this video

Do you think I could use taping mud for my first coat? I bought a box of certainteed taping but I only have a room and a walk-in closet to tape. I dont want to waste it.
I do have some light all purpose but was thinking of using it for my finish coat.
Any thoughts or tips would be aporeciated!

Im going to refinish old dark wood paneling. Currently planning on priming and painting. I’ve seen a few people use drywall mud to fill the cracks and then sand it down to make it look like drywall. Have you ever seen this done well/look good? If so which mud would you use, I’m in the US and still don’t quite understand which mud has more glue than others.
    Thanks

thanks alot , now i have to drag around seven different pails, just kidding, Ill stick wit what i have been doing, quick set for patches and first coat depending how much time I have and all purpose for everything else I just use 100 grit for the bulk sanding takes it down real fast and makes a lot of dust, lol

Great videos! Thanks for taking the time to make and post these. Quick question: for a relatively small job, using Sheetrock 90 and mesh tape for the flats and corner bead, do any gaps in the flats need to be pre-filled?
