- Hi Guys! On this episode you get to experience what it has been like for us here in the Azores, during the month of January. Spend some quality time with us here on the quaint village of Lajes on beautiful Pico island, Portugal.
January has had super sunny days, cloudy grey days and a few days with strong wind and rain. We even had snow on the very top of Pico mountain. The day time temperature for the month averaged between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius; the ocean has been between 17 and 20.
We also had a strong Atlantic depression hit Pico and the rest of the Azores on the last day of the month; on this day mother nature brought us amazing waves to marvel at. We actually did a video on this day; vlog 26. Check it out!
• AZORES HAMMERED BY MAS...
Laura and I love being here in January not only because we get to experience 3 seasons in one day, but also because we get to eat the sweetest oranges on the planet.
We hope you enjoy the video; please click like if you did.
Thanks for all your nice comments; we really appreciate it.
Our channel is growing because of you; so a big thank you!!!!

I feel like I am going back in time. We lived in Porto Martines, Terceira in 1978 and I was 10 years old. I remember it very well. It is my dream to go back.
That is amazing; it's a beautiful area of the island. You will visit sooner than later. Take care Kelly!
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 please do life is to short you wouldt regret, but you will if you don't.
Hello Carlos and Laura, hope all is well, Carlos that soup looks amazing. The oranges look so juicy , always so good just to go pick your fruit straight from the trees can't get more organic than that. Love the view of Pico so beautiful! Enjoy your evening.
Glad you enjoyed the video Natalia. The soup was healthy and delicious. Sometimes I feel like sleeping under the orange trees; what a feeling. Have a great week! Saude!
I Love the simple life of the Azores, you can actually live in the moment and enjoy life at a comfortable pace, unfortunately us north americans are constantly living in a tomorrow that never comes
We believe that living in the moment is very important for happiness and fulfillment. Being in the now is easier to do in the Azores. Take care Sergio!
Love your situation and dreams Carlos e Laura
Thank you Todd; glad to have you along! Cheers!
Canadian here who cannot wait to get there; just trying to figure out what to pack but if I make the wrong choices I can top up when I get there. Azores, here I come!
The misty weather is definitely good for the complexion! Thanks for the great videos!
It is best to pack light, hiking boots, rain jacket, umbrella, sweater etc. Azores is waiting.
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Thank you for your suggestions and for the Azores Welcome!
Great Hobby Room Laura..yes Painting is my therapy also! Great job!

I'm ready to move now and get out of this madness in the US. Beautiful place.
Excellent job on the painting Laura, getting your guest room ready for us 😂🤣
Laura loves painting; says it also relaxes her. Take care Moira!
You could make marmalade as you can use the whole fruit including the skin!! The oranges look indeed very juicy and I am sure very sweet.I always enjoy your video's Carlos and Laura. Look forward to see more.
Thank you so much; glad you enjoy them. Take care!
I love all of the details you are covering!

Beautiful!! WARMED up to -26C here in Alberta today! But we're just under a metre of snow so no big deal!!!! 🤤🇨🇦
I just saw that on the news; that is really cold. Glad you liked the video! Keep warm Marian!
Kitchen is looking great. I have been on Madeira only in winter, November till March, but nearly everyday I had a swim in the sea.. I love it. Hopefully I can move to Madeira as soon as the lockdowns are over. Love from Scotland.
Thank you Eveline! Madeira is an amazing island! Nothing like swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. Cheers!
Thanks for showing us the island of Pico, looks very nice. Our next trip will be to the Azores.
Hopefully this year. Stay safe.
That is great, glad you enjoyed it. Pico island is waiting. Cheers
Carlos you sir are a month behind great Video anyway.
We didn’t realize Pico in January could be that mild. Definitely going to factor that in for future trip! Also great job on the cupboards and the soup!!
Thank you Armando! What's surprising us the most is the air and ocean temperatures. If you love nature; you will also love experiencing any of the months. Take care and be safe!
Thank you for sharing! So beautiful! I can see why my Azorean ancestors (Souza/Sousa, Lemos) settled in the Bay Area of California after entering through Ellis Island. It's very similar! Can't wait to see how your little cottage comes along!
I grew up near Fresno Ca with a large Portuguese population. My cousins the Anacleto’s family from the Azores. Also my family the Andrade’s from New Jersey started out in the Azores.
Love seeing the January weather. Actually love listening to water/ocean sounds behind you.
The ocean is very soothing; in every way! Glad you enjoyed the video Carole! Take care!
My son Brian is a Pico fanatic just like me!
Those oranges🍊...now I'm craving one.
The Canadian have my welcome to be a Picarota! 😆👍

I am originally from Pico Island (Criacao Velha) and love watching your vlogs. Something so magical about those islands. My husband is not Portuguese but loves visiting the Acores. Keep making those videos.
You are married to a Serbian. It seems, LOL.
Can you grow mango or papaya anywhere on the islands?
Beautiful island!
Hi Carlos and Laura, just keep the videos coming and we keep on hitting the Like button. You are pioneers for all of the others who plan to make the similar life decisions. The place where Carlos tasted the water, where there was somebody swimming, where is it exactly? At Lajes ? I don't recall to ever have been there...
Glad you enjoyed it Luis. That quaint swimming hole was in Sao Mateus; also to used to hang out here in my early years. There are so many hidden gems on the island; ours to explore. Take care!
Really beautiful. Awesome. I am in chicago this is like late spring. The azores weather. Knew it was not bad.I hit the like button. Adeus brigad.
Thanks for showing us what the weather is like in January, sort of what I would’ve expected, some rainy days and also some nice days and some sun. I love watching the wild stormy weather. My wife and I are in the process of buying a house on Faial, and a really looking forward to living there. It’s so beautiful, and a peaceful way of life. We’re also looking forward to exploring Pico, and maybe we can meet you guys one of these days.
That is amazing Mark; we will be neighbors. Pico and Sao Jorge is just a quick skip over; you will love it! Good luck with the purchase! Take care!
That’s great your making the move to the Azores are from the states or Canada ? We’ve been thinking of it very seriously ourselves problem is medical for me my wife is from Terceira and on our last vocation 2018 she got her identification medical card so she can use if we are there but I’m American and use the VA for my healthcare so there lies the problems I’m really looking forward to Carlos and his healthcare video good luck on purchase wish ya the best. So Beautiful😊 Have a very nice day👍👍
Covid caused us to cancel last year's annual winter vacation to Portugal. This year, we did not even try and book our vacation. We miss being in Portugal sooooooo much.
Congrats on the progress with your project(s) 👍 Adorable cat 🐈
Covid19 sucks Janys; its affecting everything. All we can do is think positive; one day we will all travel again. We were suppose to go back to Canada on Mar 24; flight was just cancelled yesterday. There are worst places to be stuck in! Cheers!
You're inspiring me to make the jump and purchase a property in the Azores. I'm working on my dual citizenship to streamline this process (I've heard it can make the process easier). Thanks again for all the amazing content you are putting out.
Thanks for the kind words Melinda, you would love the island life. The key to buying a home on the islands is to take your time. Good luck with citizenship. Take care Melinda!
Great video again guys. Can’t wait to visit you guys there one day. Nice job on the cabinets Laura!
Great seeing your new video, yeah I would rather be in the AZORES right now too... I will be in S.Miguel soon... keep up the great work guys the AZORES will be a hot spot...👍😎💨🥞🌱✌️

Thank you Manny! These islands are very special; as you know! We just try our best to show little glimpses of it; a bit by bit! Saude!
Love your videos keep them coming I’m very interested in learning more about the health care and cost of living. Laura you are very talented I wish a had a quarter of talent and patience to tackle that kind of project. Take care enjoy the weather it’s cold and snowy back in Canada 🇨🇦.
Thank you so much Maggie! Laura just keeps getting better; hard work is paying off. I think you will enjoy an upcoming video on health care, cost of living etc. Take care!

I can only speak for myself when i say, I don't get bored watching your videos, I am living my dream through you!! Thank you for that. Take care guys, be safe and i look forward to your next venture.
Hello to Carlos and Laura from the other side of the Atlantic. My teens and I have lived on an east Coast Atlantic Island for three of the last 10 years plus winters for the other seven years. Our next big move will be to the Azores. We’re watching all of your videos and learning so much. We think our toughest decision will be which island to choose. Both teens are artists, do you recommend one island above the others with an art community? We will be bring our German Shepherd who loves island life as well as our parrot. We enjoyed the video with the very articulate parrot! We also enjoy picking oranges that grow wild here as well as figs, grapes and berries. 🤣 Thank you!
Hi Tony! Glad you are enjoying our videos. I would say that all islands are pretty open minded with quite a bit of offerings such as art, music, sports etc. The key to choosing an island is first figuring out if you need to be in the most active or least active. So if you want the least active, most quite, lowest population than the islands of Flores and Corvo would be perfect. The most active and populated would be Sao Miguel & Terceira. The in between would be the triangle islands of Sao Jorge, Faial and Pico, from these 2 the strongest trend is Pico and Faial. You will have to visit first, look around, meet the people, and see which island gives the strongest feeling. We're on Pico and with no doubt the artist community is strong and growing. That crazy parrot, lol. I hope this helps. Take care!
Enjoyed the video- I always loved traveling off season. My first time in Portugal was in January and I found it lovely. Hope to make it to Pico one day...maybe when your little cottage gets done! Looking forward to the upcoming videos. Obrigada!
We're very glad you enjoyed the video. Pico is waiting for you! Take care!
You guys are amazing! Keep up the good work! Abraço 🤗
Appreciate your kind words Helder! Abraço!
Oh my goodness...the beauty of our roots! I haven't been back too since I was around 9. Grew up, had my own nice family, 59 now and seeing how much I've missed out. My dream is to visit soon...my heart longs for the sound of the ocean, the wonderful fresh food, walking on those cobble stones to a cafe...hair blowing in the wind....freedom!
I really sincerely wish you both the very best of your dream as well. You are so nice together, making videos, beeing opposites but yet complementing. Carlos your soup I could smell it and taste it from here, and Laura your freshly painted white cupboards amazing....Oh wow! I'm Maria Helena, I too love nature, all types of crafts..I even own a guitar which I want to learn more notes...imagine bonfires at night quiet at the beach...so nostalgic.
You're kitty is so pretty, delicate just like my dainty, same colours too! She's not the only one.
Honestly your videos are so refreshing, and bring a great sense of joy, love you guys...keep those beautiful smiles, and stay healthy!
God is all love, just ahead of you, the majestic sea, with its beautiful roaring and pounding waves. and his stroke of a brush creating all the greenery, flowers and animals.
great info. I'm visiting in march and was wondering how cold. I'm not so worried now
Thank you Ron. March averages between 16 and 19, you might even get over 19 if you get a warm gulf stream. Take care!

I was born in Pico and came to the USA when I was just a wee lad. You guys are making me homesick! Thank you so much and keep up the good work! I didn't think much of the soup at first, but it really came together nicely!

A lot of vitamine C to keep away all the vírus around 😂 I would go for a swim next time, water temperature is simply great in Winter. Enjoy!
Great job on the cabinets and love the office area I take it you guy's are going to be on Pico for a while because of the covid restrictions back here in Ontario.
You guys are a lovely couple. The rawness of your videos makes them feel very natural and relatable. Keep it up, guys; I'm following you :)
Thank you so much; we really appreciate it. Take good care!
Great to see some Pico again and congratulations to your “new” kitchen, looks great. Looking forward to your video about cost of living and it would be great to know the cost of the building construction business, think you will get some experience in your new house. Take care.
Thank you Lars. We are working on the reno cost video as we speak. We are learning as we go; scary and exciting at the same time. We will pass on what we can. Take care!
That will surely go great fixing up your house and be worth every €. We cross fingers, it always helps. 🤞

Hello from Macau. Hope to visit you in Açores one day 😃
Azores is waiting for you! Take care!
Wow, Laura, beautiful job on the cupboards! Love the white, It looks so fresh and new! Wonderful, and very much looking forward to your upcoming videos on private health care and cost of groceries!!
BTW, Chris and I are for sure moving to the Azores, and the target is July. I have so many plates spinning in the air right now in connection with the move, all the requirements and hoops we're jumping through it's crazy but we're on target. We will probably rent on Sao Miguel for a few months while we shop for a house to buy, and that's not set in stone yet, but I just want you both to know that we fall more and more in love with Pico every time we watch your videos. Seriously. We are so looking forward to these windy walks and with beachy air, growing oranges and working on home projects and having copious quantities of wine (well, I mean...everything in moderation including moderation) ;-) Cheers to both of you, and hope to meet you both someday in the not too distant future.
Hey you! I thought you guys were flying back to Canada on Jan. 23, was I wrong? Must be since this video is dated Jan. 26. What happened?? did the flight get cancelled again?? Even though we know a lot of the info, we enjoy and still learn from your experiences..we love it!
When you do the "medical video", you could maybe ask a local dentist to give you a sheet of fees for dental procedures. We had one from a dentist from Algarve who spoke English. You will be amazed how much cheaper than Canada is it for the same procedure.
I am looking more into the dental cost. Take care Maurice!
Beautiful video. We want to visit Azores in last week of January and visit Sau Miguel and Flores. Do you recommend travelling in January considering it's wettest of the year ? You think we will be able to hike those wonderful trails ? Your feedback will decide our plans considering you live there.
Glad you enjoyed it. We have hiked January with sunny weather, just keep in mind that it's very unpredictable. Cheers.

I just found your channel! Love it! I’m Portuguese but immigrated to Australia in 1983. Que saudades that i have, was meant to visit last year but covid happened. Keep up with your videos!

@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Ok Whewwwww
Obrigado 😁
Obrigado eu! Saude!
Thank you for your videos! We are hoping to move to one of the islands part-time. Question: have you heard if the Azores will be letting Americans in if we have been vaccinated? Also, will they give special permission now or in the near future to those who will be looking for real estate? We are so excited and watch every video we can find!
Glad you are enjoying our videos; means a lot. At the moment everyone needs to have negative test; haven't heard about needing the vaccine. Rules are always changing. Buying Real Estate is pretty straight forward; just make sure you use a good notary or lawyer, real estate agent(if needed), bank etc. Having a good accountant from the start is important; in our opinion. The first thing you will need will be a NIF#(tax number); notary will help with this. I hope this helps! Cheers! Take care!
@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 Thank you!
Acho que vocês entendem português, certo?
Parabéns pelos vídeos. Há muito tempo sou fascinado pelos arquipélagos portugueses e penso em talvez um dia poder me mudar para uma dessas belíssimas ilhas.

Currently trying to get my TIN here at the Vancouver Consulate✌️😷
It is true... My wife and I are one week away (8 days and counting) from owning a house and property on Santa Maria. I do have a question, about the moisture on the mountainside that we are purchasing. Would it be strategic to insulate the attic area to help reduce moisture? We already have a dehumidifier, but would like a non-energy method to reduce moisture. :) Paul & Faye Weckle 2/10/2021

We have contacted the Portuguese consulate for assistance but they have referred us to multiple companies who have not returned our emails/phone calls. Can you guys recommend/suggest anyone that can help us with obtaining our NIF? We are US citizens........... Side note: My Ancestry DNA test confirmed that I'm part Portuguese/Spanish no wonder I'm drawn to the Azores!
Thank God Pico is free of Covid-19
