I really like this video. At first I didn't want to watch it just because it is sponsored and you would give a glowing review. But! Wow! You mentioned so many things that none else has. Like, recording with compression, gate, or reverb. That reverb sounded fantastic too. The key word you expressed, FUN. Recording with reverb was fun. Most of the time that should be the goal. It's one thing to be an engineer and another to be an artist. It seems the X8 will let someone choose where to put their focus.
What I was most happy about was that I can use the X8 as an interface. That pretty much completes the checkbox section for me.
And, I like your music. I'm inspired. With the X8 there are no excuses.

Great video. It looks like a really handy product. For field recording/sound scapes I could imagine, that I would end up using the manual mode all the time just to get the untouched, raw recordings - like on a DSLR where they auto functions are handy in a pinch but the manual mode is the best for full control. I would like to see a comparison of the preamps in the X8 and the Zoom F6. And also a comparison between the X8 and the Audio Technica 4025 stereo mic.
Its really cool seeing how this sample packs are made, and I have always had a huge respect for Taetro. Its crazy how music gears have improved over the ages. Great beat loved it.

I just ordered one of these yesterday, for the same reason, and more. I already have a Tascam Model 16, and Zoom R24, but I wanted something super portable, and high quality. The R24 is pretty portable, and could technically be held with one hand, and has battery power, but I feel that the Tascam X8 has advantages over the R24. The screen being a major plus. The R24 has a bit of menu diving, and a small lofi screen. I also have a Zoom H3-VR, that I plan on using along side the X8, and I plan to layer my samples. I thought of getting the Zoom H2n as well. I think I'll be able to get some interesting sounds, if I layer the recordings, from each machine. I'm also looking forward to doing some field recording. I can't wait until spring.

Thanks for the video. I will be recording a band in a studio. It seems the band setting in the Music/Instrument mode would be the best bet? Doesn’t seem like one is able to record multiple tracks in that mode, I also think I should do the wide setup?

@taetro are you ok with the preamp noise on your instrument recordings from the internal mics, other tascams are a bit noisy, but your recordings sound killer on this video! --- well done by the way! kudos to tascam marketing for picking you-- love your work!
Is it possible to simultaneously record sound to an SD card in 32 bit quality on the tascam device and record the sound of the camera on the smartphone when it is connected via usb c, when the smartphone automatically recognizes it?
With the tracks you recorded, can you bounce them down to one? I've seen a few videos of this device and I think it's incredible. Could make home recording so much easier.

Or you just record with some kind of reverb and later can not do anything with these...

How do you think this would work with using it as a preamp for the MPC Live 2 for guitars, Bass when out on the woods recording? Also how come you don't use an MPC live 2 since you love to record outdoors as well?

Thank you for review! Very helpful! One question: can I use this device as a multitrack STEREO recorder to record tracks separately? Lets say: record a string quartet each voice in stereo, not simultaneously but one after another (I am a sort of one man band). Thanks!
Not sure if you ever got the answer, but It doesn't work as a multi-track in that way. Each time you push the button you get new recordings. You can use it for multiple takes of different instruments, but it won't work like a portastudio where it's focused on that kind of recording.
No, it doesn't work as a Multi-track recorder (unlike, say, the Zoom H4nPro), which is a big disappointment to me. I have the Portacapture but rarely use it because it doesn't have this function. Otherwise, it is a great unit, but the MTR function would make it perfect. Shame really.
Just one question, can you record different tracks in the same time hearing the track/tracks you already recorded without using the pc? Thank you in advance!

Is there a way to attach 2 pencil mic directly, do you think Line Audio CM4 will able to fit? Is there a joint adaptor to able to rotate the mic so it can be 90,120 or other form of stereo mix? Do you think it's worth all that or just get a Sennheiser MKE 440 stereo mic? Is it possible to record these 2 XLR as individual track and also the 3.5mm line in as its own track so 2 stereo tracks? I want to record stereo walk video with my behind the camera commentary on a camcorder, I can use the Sennheiser MKE 440 as stereo mic and a single Pencil Condenser CM4 facing backward to me that way, but can it be achieved and can I line all this out to the camcorder so I don't have to sync but still able to record to the Zoom F3 internally as a higher quality and also a backup? Are these build in rotatable stereo mic like Sony A10, many of the Zoom recorder and Tascam X6 good and don't need to make your own stereo pair and don't need Sennheiser MKE 440? MKE 440 marketed as it can get more focused at the centre of the video while other traditional stereo mic make the centre sound less focused, true? Is there reason to attach 2 pencil Condenser directly into the 2 XLR ports on the Zoom F3 which is direct stereo but it's so close to each other, what's the ideal distance between them? Or should I just get the MKE 440 stereo and MKE 600 shotgun for video and Zoom F3 / Tascam X6 / Deity HD-TX with Line Audio CM4 and MKE 600 for audio capture for musics and games?
I'm new to music making but I not sure where to start, there are so many type of device, tracker, sampler, comproser, sequencer and so on, I think M8 Tracker is good for me to start and bring anywhere but then I see people don't do all in just one device but connect a few, one say he will connect this to the M8 but why, how about those MIDI keyboard like the OP-1 Field and OP-Z, I love these design as well but not sure where to start, I want to make futuristic modern music, soundtrack from something like Tenet, Tron and Blade Runner plus game like Wipeout flying car games and also want to make game element effects, is there benefit to get any of these and not just use Garageband and Logic Pro with their virtual synthesizer and library of sounds already recorded over the internet?

Man I don't know where to start. I have watched quite a few reviews of this product and it is definitely on my wish list. Your review is outstanding, in the fact you actually record things into the Portacapture and not just list specifications like the others. As a musician myself I admire some of the presets, for quick setup to record as and when inspiration hits me. Just a quick question if you record say a vocal along with the reverb effect, can the amount of the effect be edited in post? . I also want to give you credit for your B Roll that is seamlessly edited in. I especially like when in the audio you mentioned photographs and you had a clip of photos dropping onto the table and also the paint pallet when you spoke about colours. All in all this is now the benchmark I set myself for my personal videos to come. Well done. Peter.

to answer your question, I believe the reverb is printed onto the audio with no way to adjust in post.

Since it’s new, I only just started using it, but my previous TASCAM recorders have been. This will now replace those

Not available yet. Comes end of December. B+H in USA have a page up for it at 499 USD but obviously not available. I guess Amazon and everywhere else will have it in 3-4 weeks.

@@Taetro You won't have to ride your levels if you use it--- 32 bit is amazing!!!!! truly ground breaking for when I record gunshots and now having such a decent sized recorder with this capability--- incredible!
