I watched this movie or maybe only half of it when I was 15 years old on TV and the visuals struck me hard. since then I have watched it countless times and love the cinematography and the CGI, this is one of the most beautiful movies ever made.
As much as im really into mixed genres including sci-fi and futurism, this movie was out of the ordinary. The 2 h and 43 minutes surely will scar you for life. This also goes to the anime cowboy bebop which is also mind blowing and also is similar to bladerunner 2049. Im glad you enjoyed the movie. Truly a beautiful artwork.
As you point out, you don't need to see the first movie but knowing the original story is important to seeing all the easter eggs, clues, and plot continuations. This movie does not bring in the nostalgia like most sequels do. Except for the CG version of Rachel which was awkward probably because of Leto. Humans are still created naturally in 2049. These are replicants - fake humans who were originally created to do stuff that humans are unable to or don't want to do. Example: Work in toxic off-world mining camps. Decker aka Harrison Ford's daughter is not the first born human. Decker (human) was with Rachel (replicant) in the first movie. It was thought of as impossible for a human and replicant to bear children. She was created differently according to Tyrel, the previous creator of replicants in 1st movie. So, if a fake human and a real human can have a child, is that child human? What is it to be human? This gives meaning to the replicants who are hiding and rebelling because they believe they are human and want to be free and not slaves. Ryan Gosling's name is "K" not Joe. The police scanner refers to him as "Constant K." But, Joe was the name Joi (digital hologram girl) gave him because he was an average Joe. Plus, Joe and Joi are similar in spelling. The big hologram of Ana de Armas is an advertisement for a Joi. There are a lot of Joi holograms and each a personalized for one person. Jared Leto was weird, is weird. Just needs to go away already.
