My problem isn’t that they aren’t making any huge game announcements. They aren’t making ANY announcements. If they just say “we can’t put out games right now because of the virus” I feel like people would be way less angry. They did the same thing with Metroid and the community was really understanding.
Unfortunately , for every one person like you who'd feel better there would be be four assholes flooding their twitter feed with screaming, ranting and death threats. A "No news is better than bad news" policy makes sense from Nintendo's perspective.
This precisely. I’m convinced Nintendo was so caught up in their success from 2019 that they didn’t plan very well for 2020 in the slightest. Mind you, this is merely a theory with no evidence, but with how Nintendo doesn’t have a single game planned for the rest of the year (I don’t count any games that don’t have specific dates like Bravely Default 2 because from my experience, games with release dates only showing a year tend to not be released in the year it claims it will be released in), I cannot help but be concerned.
I do not understand why people hate the latest direct mini, leaks are not always true. And Persona 5 is not the most important game, there are SMT fans too.
There were reports back in April about how Nintendo would have to push back their E3 / June Direct to late summer due to the pandemic messing up schedules and workspaces. So who knows.
The theory I subscribe to is the Mini that everyone hated were slated for E3 along with origami king and maybe some other big stuff. They contractually HAD to publicize those games, OK was already ready to go so they released it, and the other big ones like BOTW 2 got delayed in March so they weren’t ready for E3 anyway, so they’re waiting
They cant guarantee that the dates they had are true. And constant delays were one of the big reasons the wii u f'ed up. So they're probably just going on the "we cant dissapoint people (and i mean thier shareholders) if we dont have anything to dissapoint about" rout.
@@TapDat52K I know it may be a bizarre coincidence but seriously how did these leaks happen exactly 24 years and 1 month after the release of sm64 it's like someone with the power to do it was waiting for that time lol
@@Omnipotent8383 You mean half of which are Wii U Ports and a couple lazy 2D games? Sure. They made way better AND way more games before the Wii U era. There are only a handful games on this system that have a high production value like Mario Odyssey
Nintendo’s past 2 E3s were carried by Smash. 2017 was pretty nice. 2016 was Zelda only and 2015 was pure muck. I wouldn’t have expected much this year.
@@Daniel6254 fire emblem, astral chain and links awakening, 3 amazing games that came out in 2019,and also pokemon but we dont talk about that one. There's plenty of great games in the switch that arent wiiU ports or ''lazy 2d games'' lol.
Well, Paper Mario and the "Partner Showcase" games would have been there I suppose. What we probably realistically missed was another SSBU character and 3-4 first party titles that we haven't seen yet including the Mario collection and a little more than that. One Direct could catch us up.
@@Daniel6254 There is Splatoon 2, Arms, FE3H, Astral Chain, Mario Maker 2, Ring Fit, Mario+Rabbids, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, XC2 and Definitive Edition, Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem Warriors, Candace of Hyrule and some more that are not Wii U ports or lazy 2D games; it's not like a super huge number of games and I agree they could release more (even though no one makes as many games as 15 years ago since they are harder to develop now), but you are exaggerating.
I have a theory about this. I remember hearing a while back (sorry I don't remember where, but I think it was Sakurai who said it?) that the development versions of a lot of games are not presentable at all, and the devs need to go out of their way to make presentation versions for stuff like E3 if release is still a ways off. So my theory is that Nintendo sent out a blanket order to not worry about presentation builds until release approaches so they can keep quarantine-related delays to a minimum. Combine that with their habit of making sure every game looks its best in presentations, and you get our first-party announcement drought. Of course, that doesn't excuse their social media blunders, but that's a whole other can of worms.
Enderspy Agreed. I think the content from Nintendo and their shoddy PR are two entirely different issues, and I am pinning most the blame on the lack of communication with the fans on PR.
I certainly hope that’s the case, but the utter lack of communication over this has me a little concerned. We haven’t had a first party direct in a while, and I’m certain Nintendo knows we’d understand if they said Covid has led to delays, so their refusal to communicate is somewhat unnerving.
I’d argue that 2017 was still the best year for consistent quality game releases. 2019 came close, but 2017 had the buildup of the Switch games that Nintendo had been working on for the latter half of the Wii U’s life.
jaimealexlara That’s my fear, that this drought is because they’re comfortable with where they’re at and not because of Covid. I hope PS5 and Xbox are big and creates some good anxiety for them.
@S C yes it will. Look at the exclusives this year: PS5: Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Sackboy, Ratchet and Clank, Kena. ALL THIS YEAR. Xbox: Halo, Fable, Everwild and some indies. ALL THIS YEAR. Nintendo: Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and that's it. Now you tell me which one is the pile of sh*t this year and which one is Healthy on exclusives? Nintendo better hurry or they'll lose costumers. Well atleast me.
I couldn't agree more with your points here. It's to the point where Nintendo are relying only on third party for their very own system. And yes things feel uncannily weird. Like Nintendo is always that weird company to make questionable decisions but even this is bizarre for them
Haven’t they done stuff like this for basically every console since the GameCube days? Nintendo doesn’t have anything super big to show. That’s been the biggest issue with every Nintendo console. Not enough games, and massive gaps of games. This isn’t new. This is par for the course...
I mean what's happening is development on their already announced games is continuing and maybe also something that wasn't announced yet. It doesn't really take a genius to figure that out. What? You want them to repeat stuff you already know every week?

@Fluffynator Well, then I guess Nintendo should supply their (critical) employees with computers. I mean, clearly there are still SOME people working. Where else are the AC updates coming from, for example?
The silence feels so weird especially when you look to their recent history where they even went above and beyond to publicly announce that they were restarting development on Metroid Prime 4. Lately it feels like Nintendo has become tone deaf when it comes to their audience. Good vid I agree with the points you made. I'm still a little optimistic that we'll hear something in August but I'm going to keep my expectations low
BIG CHUNGUS with 200 subs? The point is that it’s tough for everyone right now and they’re choosing to not admit that while they’re very obviously struggling super hard with this
I mean the Metroid Prime 4 thing is just an obvious thing to do. The easiest way to make the public understand that the game is going to be taking a while is to explain why it's going to take a while. Personally I think it's the audience that has gotten kind of tone deaf. I think we should just let developers develop and not get angry at them for not giving us things they don't owe us.
They lifted the “state of emergency” here in Japan on June 1st, so everyone is back at work now, and has been largely back to normal for almost 2 months besides face masks, face shields and social distancing.
Honestly most of the world has started recovering somewhere in May. But the US haven't, thus most big youtubers along with their community have a very warped perception of things.
@@CyclonSilver Pretty much. Things aren't "normal" most places, but they aren't dire either. I agree. And I completely agree with Arlo that Nintendo's lack of communication is the main frustration here. The Nintendo community was already waiting, so if COVID has really set things back Nintendo should just be transparent and make an announcement.
Imperfect_Dan Yes. Yes. Absolutely yes. I don’t think we care much whether it’s ready or not, we just want some assurance that they didn’t accidentally drop MP4 and BOTW2 in the incinerator. @The Legend of Geekdom while Nintendo is definitely doing good, if they don't act eventually we could end up repeating history and getting a Wii to Wii U case
"Sitting on a gold mine" is kinda what they do. Especially with Smash Bros being one of their most popular games, yet half of the IPs represented in that game are either inactive or outright dead. It's crazy how they have so many IPs but only ever seem interested in using four or five of them at any given time.

Every one has a big backlog. Trailers are made to brainwach you into ignoring the games you own and being hyped about new games they want you to buy. They dont care if you play your games, as long as you buy them.
Primarine Gaming I guess yall are one of those who think any attention is good attention. Cause they might be noticed, but for all the wrong reasons. Aka. noticed and hated
@Meme Man Doug and Shuntaro are presidents of the company itself, not developers. they do not have power over what goes into a Mario game like Miyamoto has for example. Furthermore, BOTW was so popular and well received BECAUSE of the fact it changed tradition. They decided to actually change the zelda formula and now BOTW is debated as being the best zelda game. So obviously it works.
There are different levels of “entitlement” and I don’t think expecting a huge gaming company to communicate with its consumers should be labeled as such. That should just be the norm, especially when there is a pandemic going on. My theory is the reason we’ll get last minute announcements like Paper Mario is so Nintendo can give a release date with complete certainty. So I can kind of see where their predicament is coming from: “Do we show games we’re working on with no release dates attached ‘cause they are all subject to delays? Or do we show one game at a time when we know a surefire release date?” Either way, they can’t make everyone happy. On the flip side, I have literally seen people say that 2020 is “worse than the Wii U era” and that’s just... flat-out incorrect. If anyone honestly thinks that, then they don’t actually remember the Wii U era. And that’s the kind of entitlement I really can’t stand. Like you said, this first half of the year has already been better than all of 2018 put together, and that was minus a worldwide pandemic.
SuperZombieBros 2013 also gave us some of the best 3DS games ever, including Animal Crossing New Leaf and A Link Between Worlds, so no it was not a total wash in terms of Nintendo’s output. 2016 had literally NOTHING. E3 was entirely devoted to BotW, which wouldn’t be released for another 9 months and would be used to launch a completely new console. It is in no way comparable to 2020 which has already given us 2 first party games and a slew of third party, and the year is only half over. Even last year gave us nothing in the first half and then boom, 3 big games in a row in the latter half.
@Tom The Fish True dat. F*** those Joycons, not only do they cost a fortune, they also break fast and fragile as F. I'm on my 3rd set due to the drifting issue and the new ones are starting to give signs of drifting!!! WTF!!!

@Karon Nuva you realize silksong, a game that everyone knows of and loves, is a 3rd party right? But no, no new news. It was just a glorified smt announcement. Stop sugarcoating nintendo, i know theres a virus but look at how much work sony and microsoft are doing
@Karon Nuva there was one, the remake of Nocturne. The thing is that Nintendo has a lot of development partners, so people were expecting somet things we already knew about getting release dates. Things like NMH3 and Bayonetta 3.
"Mobile games is the future" - Nintendo Come on don't you see it, partnership with tencent, nintendos mobile game list, little to no annoncements for games(with the expection of ports/rereleases) If it wasn't for the conoravirus and people mass buying switches, you could have seen that system fade away in a few years and a full focus on the mobile markets (heck their even extending the life of the switch, because they have nothing else to announce for new hardware)
Yeah I really thot by merging their console and handheld departments to one we would see a higher average of first party games per year. I bought my switch 2 years into it's life cycle so I am fortunate enough to have an expansive backlog of games that I need to play
Nintendo has literally put out 2-3 times as many first party games on Switch per year than it ever did on Wii or Wii U. They've put out 6 games this year alone. In 7 months. It's an insane rate to put out games and is more than anyone else in the industry, particularly since the pandemic.
Wait a minute, they already did this with animal crossing! They revealed that the game was delayed to 2020, and there’s nothing wrong with revealing games early!
Generally speaking they don't announce a game's release date unless they're fairly certain they can reach it without delay. In Animal Crossing New Horizons' case, this indicates that there was a serious problem somewhere deep that they didn't find until after the initial release date was announced.
I kinda wish they would have delayed it a bit more. Or told us. But hype sells more than games now a days. They want us starved for info. I like the new animal crossing but it feels less than the older titles. Not a big fan of the road map updates.
Why are people surprised? Silence is nothing new from Nintendo. Doesn't anyone remember the Wii and Wii U eras? There were LONG stretches of time when fans were begging for news.
Personally I’m not surprised, I’m just annoyed. And that’s coming for someone with a huge backlog (I just bought Octopath Traveler and am having a great time) and who’s both an SMT and Xeno fan. Still, as much as I love those series they’re just not enough to make most people happy. The fact that those stretches of time are so common doesn’t make them normal. If anything it just makes the whole thing worse.
Yeah but they can't keep doing that. Old habits die hard. It's going to screw them over if they don't change. They have to change with the rest of the world.
the switch is such a GREAT console though, that's the part that stings. that they can literally be sitting on top if one of the greatest innovations in gaming EVER and still screw up
@@mojavecourier6987 Nintendo is known for being stubborn and doing things their own way, so I really don't think they're going to change much, and they're still going to find success because of the great games they make. From what I've seen on their comments on the COVID situation. They mainly seem to be holding announcements because of not being sure if a game is gonna meet a release date. They invest a lot in their marketing so I suppose that's also a reason why they've decided to wait on announcing stuff. Another reason may be because their security has been breached several times this year. Perhaps they're trying to cover all the leaks they've been having.

I think this is incredibly intentional on Nintendo’s part - why try to put, say, Zelda up against two new consoles in a pandemic year, when you can put all your eggs in the 2021 basket and dominate that entire business cycle?
Had not thought of it like that. Good point. Zelda, Bayo, Metroid, 3D Mario, Pikmim and other big titles with a Switch Pro mixed in there all in a year to 2 is certain to make big waves.
The thing is, this would have made some sense except that you know Sony and Microsoft are going to go hard in the first couple of years of the PS5 and Series X. The start of a console's life is the most important time to push it as hard as possible. Nintendo won't dominate 2021, but they might see a few upswings if they actually release games and definitely if they end up announcing a Switch successor. 2020 was the year to really go for it though, and instead we got Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, and...yep.
I guess you haven't been running in the "obviously next year will be so much better" messaging, but that's been going since 2018 and still has yet to come true. Nintendo just seems perfectly content with endlessly playing it safe with the Switch. Also, don't underestimate the concurrence. It's easy to assume that Sony especially has to run out of steam eventually, but throughout the entirety of the PS4's life, they never really did, while the Switch has had four years and two of them were underwhelming.
I mean, I can see why Sony and Microsoft have more to show. They are releasing new consoles, so they have all these new games they've been developing for their new consoles launch. Also, Nintendo been selling a LOT of consoles receently, so I'm sure they've been making a lot of money on their current exclusives since people with new consoles are buying them.
Wait but what about the consumers who want info about the rest of the year. This comment just seems like defending Nintendo and saying how rich they are, which ok...weird flex
@@dansuduhast1051 I'm not defending them per say, but I can see why they maybe aren't super concerned about revealing new games. however I don't think it was fair of Arlo to point at all these exciting games being revealed by Sony and Microsoft, and say Nintendo is lacking info on new games when literally any other year we would get maybe 1 exclusive from Sony or Microsoft announced.
The Switch is in 4th year on the market, it's just wild to me how on the best selling year of your average console the only games they had close to completion in house was Paper Mario, so no other games this year are close to going gold, it's honestly just baffling planning all around

George Wilson No console is gonna be 600-700 dollars. Maybe if it came out 5 years ago, but technology has advanced and now it’s not as expensive as the price of a midrange PC. At best, they’ll be around 500, and probably 550 for a bundle with a game. Then later down the line they’ll get a price drop to around 400. Nigel Adams In general, the battle mechanics and demon mechanics are similar, but the entire "life sim" aspect is gone. It's hard to generalize with MegaTen games though - the mainline SMT games are pretty traditional JRPGs in some ways but completely different in others, while many of the spinoffs (including Persona) completely shake up the formula; for example, the Devil Survivor games are basically tactics games. In general, unless you only like Persona for explicitly the "life sim" aspect, it's worth giving the wider MegaTen series a try or two.

Arlo has a unique talent of saying one thing over an extended period of time without making it sound like he's repeating himself. Unfortunately, that's what RUclips pushes for these days. And yet, despite that, I continually watch these videos. I don't know who's the fool here.
Gotta just play what you have and be grateful. By the time you're caught up with the backlog you will find new things to play. There is so much out there.
@@DonutTPOTer "Only" for Nintendo games? Well yeah in that case that is on them to make more stuff to keep those ppl happy. I don't disagree with Arlo. I'm more on they really jsut don't have anything. At all. Nintendo's just twiddling their thumbs and counting bills from the fat stacks they've made so far with everything they've put out so far. Or maybe that's just the overly negative and nearly depressed part of me. I don't know. Point is, feeling very jaded with Nintendo and their prolongued silence.
There’s plenty of games out there. And plenty more if you want to get an older console - some of them are dirt-cheap on ebay. Dunno about you, but my backlog is full enough to tide me over for a long while.
@@alexanderb7721 they did add some very requested characters to Smash, make a return to form Mario Party and 3D Mario, gave us *SLOPES* in Mario Maker 2 and Funkey Kong in Tour.
@@toadrice Sakurai added who he wanted to add to the game. He made that very clear in the Byleth trailer, it just coincides with what some people wanted as well. Not that that's a bad thing (I actually think it's a good thing, Smash fans need to grow up), but Nintendo absolutely does not listen to fans. Animal Crossing, Pokemon and Paper Mario are perfect proof of that. Not that they hate their fans or are trying to spite them or anything, but I disagree that they're interested in what we want. I'd say they're interested in what we want when it works for them, and right now, it probably doesn't.
Great video!!! :) But.... One point that I really disagree with is the one game every month expectation. You’re right that Nintendo really relies on its first party output but I do feel like you’re exaggerating how many of them are needed. Imo the amount of titles needed for it to be a healthy year is around 4 relatively big titles. Especially knowing what goes on in the gaming industry these days with the absurd amount of work it takes to get out titles and how employees are over worked to death one title a month is a lot to ask. Also just from what I have noticed it only takes one or two biggish games a year for someone to be willing to pick up a console especially now with indigames becoming way more popular (which the switch has no shortage of).
Big agree. I don't like him to say that Nintendo is lagging behind sony or whatever cause I don't want three million games, Nintendo has never been about having three million games. I think most people don't even want something else big this year! We just want them to say what's goin on...
What has me concerned is that Sony has clearly turned it's eye on the Nintendo gaming demographic. Bugsnax, little devil inside, solar ash, Kena, sackboy, mother freaking rachet and clank! Nintendo is sitting as high as they ever have but if they are not aggressive and wow people, they will get steamrolled by Sony. Come on Nintendo! Step up and be that gaming icon we know you are!
Realistically, there will be nothing good this year.
@@whitestar0060 Except... that's not true. That didn't happen with Metroid Prime 4.
I’m curious what happened to their E3 announcements. Before E3 was canceled, they HAD to have had some stuff they were planning to reveal
There were reports back in April about how Nintendo would have to push back their E3 / June Direct to late summer due to the pandemic messing up schedules and workspaces. So who knows.
Mickels That’s what I was thinking as well. August or September probably.
Surely the mario stuff

I don’t care what anyone says. The Switch is the successor to the Wii U, NOT the 3DS! And no, the Switch Lite doesn’t count.

I think when people say that 2020 was as bad as the Wii U, they are either talking about 2013 or 2016.
"What are you even doing right now?!"
Nintendo: "Shhh, just, *Lego* of your expectations..."
It’s better to underpromise than overpromise. Nintendo is following that axiom.
If you make things as disappointing as possible, then people will get excited when the inevitable comes.
To be fair, it's not really promising anything at all, over or under, if you promise nothing at all. It's just silence.

How would they dominate in 2021 vs gen 5 consoles? Corona was best thing for them. They blew it
Had not thought of it like that.
It's like cicadas - stay off the main cycle.

I'd say they're interested in what we want when it works for them, and right now, it probably doesn't.
I’d always rather be in the quiet. I’d rather be happy with what we have now instead of being in this constant cycle of waiting.
Great video!!! :)
But....
Not to mention there's always hitting that backlogs of "games I bought on a whim but have literally never opened".
Astro bot as well
That Kena game looks sick!
@Physical you mean like the vita?
If we can just get a Pikmin 4 reveal before the end of the year, I’ll be content.
THIS.
I'll be impressed if pikmin 4 ever happens period
Dont be disappointed if it doesn't, because it probably won't. There maybe a chance it will come another year, but not this one.
Arlo, is that you on an alternate account?
Can I suggest to Arlo/Yoshiller that you bump up the audio levels? This video is much more quiet than any other movie/song/RUclips video.
