  • A legend of world cinema, Liv Ullmann joins us for an in-depth conversation about her extraordinary life and career as an actress, writer, and director. Born in Tokyo of Norwegian parents, Ullmann was working in theatre when Ingmar Bergman cast her in Persona in 1965. The two went on to live together, have a daughter, and collaborate on 10 feature films, including such iconic titles as Shame, Scenes from a Marriage, and Face to Face. Ullmann has continued to work both in front of and behind the camera and, most recently, presented her adaptation of August Strindberg's Miss Julie at the Festival in 2014.

I was in attendance for this and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life, I can't even begin to say how awestruck I felt the whole time

My gosh, I have fallen in love with this gorgeous human, Liv Ullman. I only "discovered" her because of an interview of her daughter, Linn Ullman, on the Louisiana Channel.
The interviewer being the way he is makes Liv absolutely incandescent.
Thank you for this unforgettable interview.

Thank you so much for filming this and making it available to all. Wonderful to hear Liv speak - such a wonderful actor and filmmaker. Just one small gripe - though I realise Liv Ullmann will always be inextricably linked to Bergman, it would have been nice to have more of a focus or perspective outside the lens of her work with him. I would love to have heard more about Liv's thoughts on her theatrical career and on directing. Despite this it is a privilege to hear such a great artist speak so thoughtfully and with such warmth and humility.

Kudos ,Liv Ullmann, for standing up for Ingrid Bergman. It is a double standard that is dying hard.

There's not ONE interview with Liv Ullmann which isn't emotional and absorbing. The time just whizzes by.

Read the comments -- this event is in honor of Bergman. This interview therefore is "slanted" towards Bergman & not so much Ullman.

Phenomenal. Doesn’t deserve the praise she so deserves bc English is not her native tongue.

I know she went to first grade (I think) in NYC (Flushing) in the same school my Dad went to in the early 1920s. She spoke English then (about 1944-45) but moved to Norway after the War,

neworleansguy10 Oddly enough I would also say the lack of appreciation is to do with a language barrier...though not HER language, but the 'language' of film itself and how misunderstood or misappreciated that is.
There is a dizzyingly VAST canon of work produced outside of Hollywood over the last hundred years that is still seen as 'other'. A simply staggering amount. The language of those films...in terms of their style, their scope, their depth, their structure, their narratives...obviously doesn't 'speak' to the regular cinema audience who have been conditioned by the language of mainstream Hollywood films. That's the problem.
But hey....it has always been thus. Fortunately the 'rest of the world' out here is a big big place and there are enough people who 'know' and enjoy the language of non-mainstream art cinema.
Liv is well-loved by enough people all over the world.

Robert McGlinchey Sorry Robert, you've replied to my comment but I think what you say was maybe meant to be in reply to someone else? It's interesting, just not connected to what I was saying. :)
Ingmar's last film btw, Saraband. Yes I know it well, got it in the collection!

Dave Sanderson Thank you got your reply - what I thought you meant was the language or jargon of filmmaking. I mentioned “Sophie” Liv wanted to know the technical term for “flying the camera towards the actor”. Hopefully the language/jargon and hardware continues on.

Do we know when this interview was filmed? (they mention "Mulholland Drive" at Caan. Was it that long ago [2001]?)

I'm one of the guys that asked a question in this Q&A. I can verify it was 2018 in the fall, during Bergman's 100th birthday celebrations.
