I got it and it is better than my old Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 (old one, no VR). The only lens I will be adding will be the 70-200 f/2.8 S when it becomes available.
I do wonder when I see reviews like this why someone would take this chance or even set the camera on a rocky surface next to water. I would have at the very least a hand strap attached to it.
@@aussie8114 i honestly think if size and weigh are not put in consider when producing lenses, all manufacturers can make lenses with perfect image quality.
Chris! would really love to see the Tamron 17-28mm 2.8 vs the Sony Gmaster 16-35mm 2.8. With a $1300 price diffrence its a comparison ALOT of us want to see.
I’ve been on the fence about this purchasing this lens and I do believe that I’ll make the commitment and go forth with it! Thanks Chris for the remarkable review!
Had a chance to try this lens out last weekend. It's stunning. I've been using my 24-70 2.8 VR with FTZ but this release is very tempting formal the reasons you've outlined in this video.
When this review started out I was confused and looking for an afro. All fun aside , it’s looking like Nikon is developing some very nice performing lenses. Especially for video. No focus breathing is nice . I understand they are focus by wire so how easy is it to do manual focus pulls with this lens . Also what’s the word on Nikon updating the firmware in all their Zed mount lenses for good manual focus pulls in video ? And how is this lens when zooming during video? Does it stay in focus? Par focal I guess is what that is called . Thanks for your great reviews
Would be extremely interesting to see you test this lens out on say the Z6 in more difficult low light situations like concerts and other events. Nice well rounded review! And the intro had me falling off my chair, that was spot on.
Sony is FAR ahead of Nikon with respect to mirrorless lenses. There are many, many, many more available, and among them are some of the best lenses in the world (90mm macro, 24mm f/1.4, etc.). What makes you think Nikon will not only catch up but surpass them? Even if Sony and all 3rd parties completely quit making E-mount lenses for 3 years, Nikon wouldn't have caught up by then.
The biggest problem with this lens is how the 24-70mm f/4 is so damned good, it's hard to justify the upgrade because I'm so happy with what I already have. Nikon is killing it with these lenses.
I can appreciate the comment about the focus speed compared to the older DSLR versions... the 2.8 lenses have always been tremendously fast focusing lenses! A lot of professional photographers who have become accustom to that will appreciate the heads up!
Just booked mine for the Z6 its a very expensive lens ... But what needs to be done has to be done so can't complain and glass upgrades are always worth it..
Yes it was :-) Their humour just makes their videos stand out even more from all the shouters out there. It reminded me of a video they did a while back on how to create smooth videos and cuts with using B-roll footage. The intro to that video also was a round-up on how not to do it, hectic, fast cuts, and afterwards we saw Jordan in front of the laptop going "What have I done?!".
I would say that the Z 24-70 f/2.8 S is probably Nikons greatest 24-70. Maybe not necessarily the best among what's out there for other brands, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the best one yet out of the 3 I've owned (first the older 2.8G ED version, then the 2.8E version--the most current F-mount version, and now the Z version).
You do good reviews. You cover a lot. No mention of image dimensionality but can see from the samples it does not look flat. I do wonder if buying the Z6 whether the f4 is a far wiser choice when considering its about $900 when purchased with the body vs about $3,200 for the f2.8. However for the Z7 the f2.8 is a fine match.
Ugh. Just ordered the f/2.8 after debating with self over the f/4 for several months. Just realized that the lens extends externally and isn’t internally housed like I hoped. I do look forward to owning it. Thanks for the review.

Hi DPReview (Chris & Jordan), thank you very much for your extremely useful work. I wondered, related to Nikon if you know anything about what they promised us all about the impressive update that they were going to provide us this summer. Hi Chris, nice review. I noticed you said that the 24-70 2.8 S has a bit slower autofocus. Is there any chance you can cast some light on that very important issue some more?
Hey Chris, nice informative video thanks, but not being familiar with you before, that beginning almost had me skipping until I realised it was a joke 😂 Cheers
Great video as always team. Some feedback though: I think this video had a few too many shots of Chris in the park talking to the camera while just holding the z6 in his hand or it beside him on a rail. I think that your other videos do a better job of balancing these shots with shots of usage.

Just bought it and cannot wait to compare it with my 24-70 2.8 VR. Being light means a lighter backpack... that's already good news.
Nice review as always, Chris! As a landscape and product STILLS X-T3 shooter (no video), I have been debating on selling my Fuji kit (reluctantly), and moving into FF, specifically the Nikon Z7 (or the Sony a7Rlll). Since I shoot 99% tripod-mounted, neither IBIS nor video interests me. So, my question is, for large print output (around 24"x 36" prints), how much of an improvement in terms of image sharpness, detail rendition, dynamic range, base ISO performance, etc., would I see over the already excellent X-T3? And, pardon my phonetic ignorance, but why pronounce "Z" as "Zed"? Thanks!

Truly fantastic optics in this lens. But what's up with those sensor reflections? I've honestly never seen that in any other camera or in any of my mirrorless cameras shooting into heavy backlight or flair. Is this a problem for this lens in particular because of the rear element? Does this occur on other cameras?
Great review confirming the lens would be very useful for me. Just the price needs to come down a little for me to justify spending to add to/replace my 24-70 f2.8 F-mount VR & 24-70 f4 S lenses
you are saying the auto focus speed or response is slow, can this be because in a dslr there is a Seperate focus electronics (engine) which makes the speed faster than a mirror less camera, which presumably would do everything off the main chip from the sensor itself, and hence have a slower response due to prioritizing the time of the chip to many duties.

Nice to see Nikon producing some great lenses for the s line up. If only they were more competitive on price when they launched they could be killing it now. In my humble opinion if they had gone z7 £2400 z6 £1900 35 1.8s £490 50 1.8s £490 24-70 f4 £600 24-70 2.8 £1300 they would have placed themselves in such a good position. I would go Z6 + F2.8. You're probably going to upgrade the body in a few years but this lens should last 4 times that, and have a better resale value if you ever decide to sell it. If the slower AF speed is okay with you , the Z6 F2.8 combo should offer some great low light capability and less noise overall.
Thanks Chris. I believe you hit all the poimts I had on my minds to ask. It seems like this is the right 24-70 f2.8 lens to use with the Z cameras. My 24 -70 with built in image stabilization would be way to heavy to carry, Thanks for your review. 📷 👍 😆
Thanks for taking a swipe at those obnoxious "reviewers" on this platform. 👍👍👍 Just needed to throw in some background RGB and it would have been the full package.
When you say it focuses a bit slower than the DSLR versions of the lens I wonder if you're talking about the DSLR lenses mounted on DSLR's or adapted onto the mirrorless bodies. The Z6 and Z7 aren't known to be fast focusing so hopefully it's the fault of the bodies and not this awesome new lens.
6:52 $7k sitting on a railing above a stream all nonchalant like! :D Definitely disappointing to hear about the autofocus seeming to be slow... most of the Z-series so far are pretty darn good. Loving my f4 version so far, and would be great to hear more about what makes the 2.8 worth the premium (understanding of course the obvious).
Not backed by any scientific measurements, I actually feel like the S focuses faster than my (non-vr) 2.8 f-mount version. I feel like the S goes straight to the focus point whereas the older one hunts a bit before settling in. Anyway, just my opinion.
You've really got to shake you head sometimes with camera and lighting manufacturers. I've used Nikon camera's for nearly 20 years as a professional. And for most of that time, used my beloved 24-70 2.8 G. It is the true definition of a workhorse. Built like a tank. I have tried to look after it as best as possible, but it has taken some pretty heavy hits from time to time... but it still performs outstandingly. This has alot to do with the design of the lens, and specifically how the lens hood is mounted to the lens body, and NOT the front moving element. WHY ON EARTH would Nikon change this design characteristic on the new 24-70 2.8 S!!?? This new lens has taken a backward step in build design, and opens it up to severe lens alignment problems from day one in the field. Sure it is fine in a controlled environment, with minimal risk of unexpected knocks.... but this lens is marketed as a "professional" lens. If you ask any news, sport or event photographer, every one of them will be able to recount multiple times something has banged into the front of their lens on a job. 100%. Well done Nikon, just did something else, that makes you LIKE everyone else.

Damn that's a nice lens
