    I was born and raised in Salinas, and absolutely loved it. I lived just 3 blocks from the Steinbeck house. I was literally heartbroken when Dad moved us to Vegas in 1962 for work. My heart always remained in Salinas.

    Great work ! I loved this video. As an English major I read a lot of Steinbeck in school and this is a place I always wanted to visit. You do such a thorough job with your videos, so informative AND entertaining. And don’t listen to any naysayers, this channel is not just about where you go, it’s also about YOU and YOUR connection to the places so keep featuring yourself and talking to your audience, you do a tremendous job. As for being an old guy, only as young as you feel right? And a 7 hour drive after 2 hours sleep isn’t something a lot of younger people could do. So I quote Liam Gallagher when I say:
    Hey ! Stay young and invincible !
    'cause we know just what we are
    And come what may we're unstoppable
    'cause we know just what we are.
    Keep up the awesome work and I’ll be seeing you soon✌🏿✌🏽

      Hey Scott, my channel was having a temporary identity crisis, but it's back on its meds now and all is good :-) Thanks for your support. You are awesome and those lyrics are perfect. I love that you were an English major. Are you a teacher now or are you a full-time vlogger, or are they the same thing? Hope you received the message I sent you a few days ago with my email. See you soon!

    Thanks for the wonderful tour of Steinbeck's resting place as well as his childhood home. My most favored book of John Steinbeck is East of Eden, although I enjoy all of his books. I own them all. Some I've read more than once. John Steinbeck passed away when I was 20 years old. Several of his books were required reading when I was in high school in California.

    Salinas reminds me of Redlands, the downtown area and Steinbeck House both.
    My mother's family was also one of those Okie transplant families. They came out to San Joaquin valley every year to pick crops. Eventually they all settled here.

    I am not one that thinks you shouldn't appear in your videos! As I've said before, I like your laid back style, and I much prefer you talking about the graves and the area you're visiting rather than just seeing pictures with very little info attached. However, that being said, I so like the new name of your channel! This video made me want to visit Salinas. Great looking little town, and the cemetery was awesome. I'm a new viewer and subscriber... I really enjoy the journeys with you. I love that you're in your video and even your family is included. My favorite was the one with your grandparents. It was your grandma that caused you to love visiting cemeteries. I have always loved cemeteries and I still do. The first place I ever lived was in Chicago across the street from a beautiful fancy cemetery called Rosewood I believe. My husband and I still go on walks in cemeteries. This is why we enjoy you so much- how we walk and talk on visits is like how you are on your visits. Thank you for your beautiful work!

    Steve, I just came across this. When my brother was pretty sick with cancer we gathered as a family in Pacific Grove and went to Salinas and the Steinbeck museum. Saw the camper that Steinbeck used in Travels with Charley his poodle. He's a great writer. Thanks for sharing about your family. Chain links indicate a fraternal order of somekind. Great again, I spent 2 training cycles at Ft Ord in Monterey during the Vietnam war. Cannery Row is my favorite Steinbeck novel. The row was derelict, abandoned canneries at that time , but you could feel the pesence of a young john steinbeck and Doc Ricketts walking those lonley streets. Now it's an international tourist destination.

    • @TheGraveyardChannel
      @TheGraveyardChannel  6 лет назад

      It's also weird to think that Vietnam is now a tourist destination. That must feel especially surreal to you and others who served during that war. And, yes, Cannery Row is one of my favorites too. I didn't have time to stop in Monterey, so I'll be going back to visit Ricketts and others in the cemetery there. I also want to visit John Denver's memorial on the beach. Ricketts and Denver both had tragic endings. Thanks for sharing your story!

    My Steinbeckera Connection. In 2013 I was homeless on McAbee beach on Historical Cannery Row in Monterey, California and became fascinated with Sea glass. Having a lot of time on my hands, I started finding beautiful pieces of these rare, gems of the Sea. I then started hoarding things like surf tumbled Sea glass, pottery and abalone shells. I thought that it would be great to be able to make jewelry out of it but I didn’t know how.
    One day I met a guy that taught me how to do wire wraps, a technique for using wire to secure stones. After some time, and a lot of practice, I perfected my newfound craft. One day i met an awesome lady at a local church that offered me her garage for shelter. Now i had somewhere to make my jewelry. I started creating jewelry pieces full time and a year later I moved into the house and still had the garage. Now my Etsy is doing fantastic. Montereyroseman @Etsy. Homeless no more.
    A little history on Sea glass…where it came from and where it was found. Rare Sea glass from McAbee beach on historical Cannery Row.....Monterey, California…
    As early as the 18th century, Portuguese whalers set out from McAbee beach. In 1907, the Chinese leased the beach after a mysterious fire destroyed their makeshift wharf and shantytown, next to Old Wharf 1. Later, that year Carmel’s city council voted to truck their garbage over to dump on McAbee beach. Keeping their beachs pristine. Much later the canneries had came and went. By the 60s, most of the canneries had been abandoned and in ruins, but the tide still came in and out tumbling all the garbage and glass bottles and making some the of the best quality Sea glass ever.
    It takes 50 to 70 years to make a perfect jewelry quality piece. Over time the piece could break in half and start the process all over again. Most of the best of my collection have probably tumbled for 100+ years. That’s over 70,000 tide changes.
    For quite a few years, John Steinbeck and Doc Ricketts enjoyed a few beers together at Doc’s Office and Lab on Cannery Row…
    In 1923 Doc Ricketts set up his lab on Cannery Row. Almost every day that he was at his lab, he walked over to the Chinaman’s grocery store across the street and would purchase a few quarts of beer. Also in 1923, John Steinbeck signed up for a marine biology course at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove. Meeting Doc Ricketts, as well as their mutual interest in marine biology, helped spark a deep friendship between the two. They hit it off immediately and became close friends. Steinbeck published his novel CANNERY ROW in 1945. The later part of the decade, Steinbeck and his wife moved to Los Gatos California but frequently visited Monterey and were hanging out with New York’s Elite mostly.
    When John Steinbeck and Doc got together they had a few quarts of beer. The men both liked their beer for 25 years on the row until Doc’s death in 1948. I can estimate at least 40,000 + quart containers + all the refuse from the lab was thrown thru his trap door into the bay. So there’s an excellent chance that my Amber Sea glass Jewelry or that era glass being made from Doc Ricketts, John Steinbeck or Mack and the boys (the characters from Steinbeck’s novel CANNERY ROW) quarts of beer. That was most of the 20’s and 30’s that Steinbeck lived in Pacific Grove.
    I have Prohibition glass, Chromium glass, Cadmium glass, Erbium glass, and Uranium glass. The list goes on.
    All of my Sea glass that I have collected, has been picked up either under his trap door, which is now covered with a metal culvert, or within 150 feet of it. McAbee beach is a small cove where anything that’s thrown out just comes right back onto the beach. Lighter stuff, like most garbage, just went to the south and within a week was on Del Monte Beach. Three weeks later it would accumulate at the site of the dump in Sand City. In Sand City they built a massive wall of concrete right at the high tide mark. It’s at least 100+ yards long and 50 feet high. Then they took all the tumbled gravel with Sea glass in it from the minus low tide in front of the wall and back filled a couple football field sized lots, 50 to 150 feet deep. It stretches all the way up to the freeway and past the recreation trail, which is now the back of the former Orchard Supply Hardware Store (closed now). To this day, anywhere you look behind the wall, there are millions of pieces of un-finished Sea glass, with the occasional jewelry quality piece unearthed from somebody’s foot print. I have friends that have dug down 20+ feet and have unearthed some beautiful pieces. How’s that for our local history? Montereyroseman.com

    I'm not sure if you have told the fact about your family being in Oklahoma and then moving to CA. I'm curious about where they were? Any relatives still here? Any relatives buried here?

    • @TheGraveyardChannel
      @TheGraveyardChannel  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Rhetty, my great grandparents and my grandmother lived in Granite, Oklahoma. My great grandfather was a guard at the OK State Reformatory in Granite. Before that, he was a farmer. I'm not sure if he was there at the same time as Wiley Post. My grandmother graduated from Granite HS, which I think was just a one room school house. My grandfather was born in Kansas City, MO. He was a career military man from age 18 until he retired and probably stationed in OK when he met my grandmother. She was one of eight kids. The whole family moved to CA in the 1930s. A ninth younger brother died at around 10 years old. I think he is buried at Granite City Cemetery. So is my grandmother's sister Lela Mae Scott Howard and her husband Cletis Howard. They moved back to Granite about 10 years or so before they died. I'm planning a road trip back to St. Louis next May and plan to stop at the Granite Cemetery and visit them. We took a road trip to Granite when I was around 9 or 10, but I don't remember much. In the early 1930s my grandparents moved to San Francisco and that's where my mom was born, in 1935. If it weren't for the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, I might have been born in Oklahoma :-) Do you guys live anywhere near Granite?

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory 6 лет назад +1

      @@TheGraveyardChannel I'm not near it but I know where it is and I'm familiar with it. It's a smaller town that has a neat little square downtown. Wiley Post was in that prison for about a year starting in 1921. When you come thru you'll have to let me know.

    • @TheGraveyardChannel
      @TheGraveyardChannel  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Rhetty, I'll definitely let you know before I come to town. If you are available and interested, maybe we can meet at a cemetery and do a vlog together. I'll be making the trip to St. Louis in late May to see my grandson graduate from HS. I'm going to allow myself two weeks or more to drive there from CA, so I have plenty of time to stop at lots of cemeteries and memorial sites along the way :-)

    Just a thought about the burial location. My great great grandfather was buried in his wife's families grave area, 'named for her family'. He out lived most of his immediate family and his siblings and children's grave sites have been lost through time. But I found his grave. He survived the Civil War. His brother died in the battle of Cold Harbor. That battle lost more Union soldiers than any other battle, I've read. Terrible loss of life. People don't realize that most memorials are to remember all of the loss so we do not forget and repeat our mistakes.

    Steve, while your grave visits in Southern California include many interesting people from the past, those flat marker cemeteries could only appeal to someone on a riding lawn mower. Dull, dull, dull, and without a GPS, I doubt I would be able to find anyone. I encourage more visits to cemeteries with above ground markers. Those endless acres at Forest Lawn make me think I am a small bug on a big pool table. And my favorite Steinbeck book was East of Eden. And in the movie, James Dean was great. The scene where his father rejects the money Dean earned by buying crop futures involves some of the most emotional acting ever on celluloid.

      lol, i know what you mean about the flat markers :-) unfortunately, i live in so cal and that's where most of my trips take place. but about 50 percent of my visits are to cemeteries with standing headstones. i agree about james dean and east of eden. thanks, raymond!

    I find it interesting how writers approach their work. Harlan Ellison could write in a department store window with a crowd onlooking, while Louis L'Amour wrote he could concentrate on his work doing it in the middle of Sunset Blvd. I have read that John Steinbeck liked to run the washing machine as BG white noise to help him concentrate. It must have worked judging on the great novels he produced.
