- Yes! This is it! You are listening to my audio cassette tape for Berklee Scholarship Audition. This changed my life!
A little backstory… I was studying Russian at University around that time thinking maybe I can play my guitar as hobby 😔… BUT I worked hard & sent my demo tape and my essay to Berklee College Of Music in 1984. THEN Berklee offered me $4700USD towards tuition including $250 John Abercrombie Jazzmaster Award (tuition was $2500 per semester back then!) … THIS gave me a chance to go to America! Please keep your dreams big and do it!

That scholarship paid off for Berklee, I’m sure you’ve inspired tons of people to join Berklee, and then keep inspiring them with your teaching.
If I did not get this... I am not here in Boston! Once I got my scholarship... I had to work many jobs to save up my living expenses. My first apartment (One bed room) was $375 a month!
@@TomoFujitaMusic You are my biggest inspiration sensei! Thank you for all your hard work!
@@garailac You're welcome! Thank you!
@@TomoFujitaMusic 375 sounds cheap now lol
@@TomoFujitaMusic what happened to the US? wages are like 7-10 dollars minimum now right?
When I think of Japanese guitarists in the 80s its hard not to immediatly imagine the likes of Masayoshi Takanaka. To me Tomo is right up there with him in the pantheon of guitar.
Thank you so much!
That’s a massive compliment
Those last few lines:

@@JazzgutsVGvanKampen Thank you so much!!
Man I can imagine a bunch of stuffy jazz dudes in an air conditioned southern california office, smoking cigarettes and going over audition tapes. They pop in the cassette titled “tomo” and this starts to play. 1984, what a time to be alive…
Thank you!
Isn’t Berklee in Boston tho? Do you perhaps mean Berkeley?
Berklee is in Boston!
Berklee was founded by “Lee Berk”.
This is great! Sounds like something Takanaka would do. The band you're playing with is excellent, Japanese bass players in the 80's can't be beat.
Thank you! This bass player is Kouich Osamu ... he is one of top players in Japan.
Ya gave me heavy Takanaka vibes so good, whomever's playing synth is a magician
This have casiopea and mezzoforte vibes all on the hearth and has been 37 years since, great master Fujita!!
Thank you!
It is actually the perfect soundtrack while we see all ur life in music through photos and videos :)
Thank you!
I love how your playing and sound was so full on "city pop". Very much a sign of the times. Great little time capsule.
There's even a clip from Blue Mood in Tokyo where I saw you live! cool!
Thank you!
I love that we’re getting more of the Tomo lore now. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Probably the most gain I have ever heard you use. I love that even a legend of your stature has humble beginnings, thank you for all you have done and continue to do.
Thanks for listening! Boss OD-1
Doesn't sound like you needed music school.
My main purpose was to go to America. In order to go there... I needed to go to school! That was my idea! Music school thing was a little extra!
@@TomoFujitaMusic I can't even imagine living in a massive city with an ocean surrounding me. I've got plains of grass that I hate. 🤣🤣 but that's better than being trapped on an island.
Mr Fujita you are a blessing to the world of music, especially us learner's of guitar. Thank you.
Maybe music school needed Tomo..
@@TomoFujitaMusic you wanted to go America and I want to go to japan 😂
Mr. Fujita, I like your 80's style! Your countless hours of dedication to your craft show brilliantly in your playing. I - like many others - am very glad you received your Berklee scholarship because it allowed us to learn from your wisdom. Thank you very much for sharing this with us, and for your mentorship. Here's to many more years of learning from you!
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing this! That last scene where you are walking through a sea of friends spreading your musical love is beautiful. I'm so thankful I joined Guitar Wisdom.
Thank you so much!
Damn, that solo at the end. I SEE why you got the full ride ! That was stuff old seasoned people play, not some young kid. You were fantastic.
It paid off didnt it.? You got life by the tail my friend good job. 👍
Yes! Without the full ride. I am not living here in Boston! It was my dream and that demo tape changed my life completely! Yes! Two years of jazz guitar lessons (private lessons) really paid off!
Thanks for all the great videos, Tomo! Spreading the fun and knowledge we've gained is one of the best things about music and I really appreciate you sharing yours. Have a good day!
My pleasure! Thank you!
Love this and all the photos they tell such a cool story and give so much insight into your life 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you! My student Zack Gibs put all those photo into this video!

How absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing such a precious piece of history with us. The 80's was special, now even more special. Thank you, sir!
Glad you enjoyed it Thank you!
This is awesome. Love all the old pics and the walk down memory lane. And your guitar playing is exceptional. I can't believe you possessed that level of musicianship at such a young age. Remarkable. You obviously made Berklee's decision very easy. I'm sure that inviting you to Berklee was one of the best decisions made in the history of that school. A win-win for you and Berklee!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much!
Very cool of you to share this Tomo! It's like a little time capsule :-) Really enjoyed listening to it and seeing your old pictures too. Rock on!

Your passionate desire to play for a living really shows in the playing! It’s so charged! Loved it, no wonder you got the spot!! 👏👏

Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you very much Tomo! This is very inspiring! Much love from Germany!
You're very welcome! From Boston!
Hey Tomo!
This is fantastic. I have been playing guitar since I was 9 years old. I didn’t play any sports or anything, just guitar, and I played in a classic rock cover band for a majority of my childhood.
Many of my peers from that part of my life had great guitar players they idolized. I did not fall into that crowd, but nowadays I’ve found a revitalized inspiration from hearing you speak about guitar, and listening to things like this.
Thank you for being so passionate about music, and SHARING that with the world.
I don’t think i’ve been more impacted by another guitar player like I have learning from you.
Thank you! Lots of love.

Thanks for the free lessons and tips. My technique has improved so much in the last year. It really feels like I'm playing the instrument now instead of just memorizing specific moves. THANKS, TOMO!!

So cool, Sir! I started at Emerson College that same year and one time I signed in 15 Berklee guitar players to a party in our dorm and I got written up very fast!:) Boston in the 1980's was so innocent and fun for the college years. Your video is classic. You are such an amazing player! Arigatto Gozaimasu!

Thank you so much! Please remember I was just like everyone... same! A lot of dreams, possibilities, confusion, too many choices, too much destructions.... But somehow I did choose my own path through mistakes, bad decisions and keep thinking fresh ideas everyday! Keep mind open so that ... you know what to do!
Great one Tomo! Fantastic overdrive tone, and licks for days! Kind of reminds me of The Yellowjackets
Thanks for listening! Yes. I was listening a lot of Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Steve Lukather, Jay Graydon... This recording, I did not use any guitar amp! That was direct into...
Why am I crying? This video just fills me with hope, desire, passion and love.

Thanks so much!
Mr. Fujita you sound a lot like Steve Lukather in this tape! Love the tone, and the storey behind the tape is amazing I'll ontinue chasing my dreams.
You are totally correct! First I was heavily influenced by Larry Carlton with a lot of bending. Then I was influence with that wide vibrato and melodic phrasing from Steve Lukather. That's why I changed the pickups to EMG!
Love it! Please do a 3 level lesson on Tatsuro Yamashita’s Misty Mauve!
Thank you!
Awesome solo! Great to see a nostalgic look of your past, amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing! Love your final messages, so important.
Thank you! Yes! You got it!
The arrangement is just stunning here, of course you are amazing. I am wondering who is playing bass and drums? They are so locked in and the bassist really knows what they are doing. What a groove. Also the horn section is such a great touch. Thank you for this gem. Is this available on Spotify??
Thank you very much!
The quality is pretty good for a cassette tape that's almost 40 years old. You can really hear all the Larry Carlton trademark touches in this full version. Lol at the 1:55 photo. You looked like some of the guitarists I roadied for back then. :)
Thank you so much!
