As mentioned in the wrap-up, the Canon is outpaced by both the Nikkor and Sony by a pretty good margin. I'd expect an update soon. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
That moment when you realize that after watching all these reviews, you can't afford any of these cameras, have no intention to buy them, nor any idea what half it is they're talking about... but you still watch them, anyway, for their excellent commentary and analysis, and their use of scenery and photography to demonstrate. Good on you, TheCameraStoreTV :D
That in hotel clip is really-really funny! I can't stop laughing every time I watch that scene! hahaha.. Now, as a Sony shooter, I might go for 70-400 mark I.. Thanks for the review anyway cheers!
Too many questions! I like the C100 for its size, but I'll be sticking with the FS700 for most shoots. RAW shooting on the Mark III is awesome, but it's a pretty painful workflow, certainly too slow for TCSTV videos. It seems quite safe though. As far as the 200-400, Nikon's design costs $6249, so the lens can be made less expensively than the Canon, however the word is that the Canon 200-400 is one of the sharpest zooms ever made. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
This was filmed on the C100. I wanted a more discreet camera for shooting in the crowds at Lake Louise, which is why I didn't bring my usual Sony FS700. I liked the Canon, but I don't think we'll stop using the FS700 any time soon. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV, just wanted to thank you for some very good, yet mostly :P unbiased reviews and tests that you do. It's nice to see the love you have for photography itself and not only the gadgets behind it :)
Hello, They needed to come under our permit as sponsors because they were making this commercial video for TCS. If you shoot in Banff and you weren't hired to do so (i.e.: a commissioned shoot) then you don't need a license. Even if you plan to put the photographs on the web later hoping to sell them you don't need a license. Recreational shooters don't need a license. So don't worry. Shoot as much as you want with no worries unless you're guaranteed to get paid for it. Brian Merry
OK men. . .Cheers to the mornin after. At first I thought the smiles and funny walk was for the shooting location and the weight of the equipment. Great channel by the way. This gives a new meaning to "shooting long". Keep it up.
Hi Chris nice video as always. One thing I always notice is that you live in an amazing part of the world, very beautiful. Keep up the great work maybe give us more. I like your informative yet light hearted reviews.
Great review! As always. I'm already looking foreward to the next... But what's up with the exposure and color differences? I have never shot with a Sony, but is it much darker and more red than Nikon by "default", or did you underexpose/boost iso (hence the color cast) or something? And does the C100 really moire that much? I noticed Chris' shirt and zipper danced a bit. Thanks.
Always great reviews with a good sense of humor - big props from germany! I have one question: Which audio equipment do you use for the videos? the quality is amazing!
Jordan, thanks for such a great review. I have been looking for a longer telephoto lens with at least a 400mm reach. I have a Nikon D500/and 850 along with a Z6II and have started leaning towards more Z lenses but- they don't work with my F mounts so... I have decided to stay with F lenses that can be used with all 3 cameras-the Z with the adapter that works flawlessly on the Z6II. I did a serious look at the 100-500 since it has such great ratings- but I found that the barrel and the lens overall is just too big and seemed awkward to handle. I also really was impressed with the Z 100-400 but I wouldn't be able to use it on either the 500 or 850 and the $2600 price tag was a little beyond where I want to go. So, after watching your review- I am going to rent the 80-400 and really put it through its paces shooting orcas and eagles up in Victoria. Thanks again for the review.
Really..?? A licence to take Photos! Phew! That is a new one on me! I live in the UK where we get screwed on Everything,, But I've never heard of that! Great video thanks!
Great review, got a question if u dont mind. Although this episode is about lenses, but how would u describe Sony's performance? for some reason i'm on love with this camera, but researching like crazy to make sure i'm taking the right decision. I also care about video performance, does it stand a chance against Canon 5D MK3?
Hi Chris, great comparo btw! Special request, no one has done a comparo between the Sony 70200G2 vs Canon and Nikon's 70200 lenses. This focal length is one of the most important and used for enthusiast and professionals alike. Could you please cover this comparo test?
great videos mate ive just subscribed. i am new to photography and need some advice, which camera would be best for me out of the canon 100d, nikon 1 v2 or the canon eos m? ive seen your review of the eos m and it swayed me a little. any advice would be greatly appreciated!! thanks.
thanks for the video. Can you guys make a video on quadcopters for aerial photography??? like 500-1500 quadcopters please. Trying to buy one, but it's so hard to choose a pre built model or to just build one. too many options. thanks
interesting that you find the nikon sharper, and dpreview just did a test and they found the sony much sharper, seems like there is some variation between lenses.
One issue I have seen posted before concerns the IS system debate between body or lens. Now the lens IS definitely works for the lens, but how much correction can the lens do if the camera body behind it is moved slightly. As with perhaps pushing the shutter a bit too hard. I have heard that the camera body IS (sensor shift) can deal with any variations from the body AND the lens.
I completely agree on the 100-400, It was easily better than the Nikon 80-400 AF-D, and a very good lens on film and early digital, but I know when I got my 7D it lost its magic and spark.. I switched it out for a 70-200 f/4L IS and 1.4x TC and found the combo to be better optically (albeit a bit shorter) Heres hoping Canon gives us an update soon..
mind if i ask, did you test the lens with the a99's stabilisation w/shut turned on or off? massive improvement in image quality and sharpness when it's switched off.
It's possible that the Active D-Lighting in the Nikon was working to lighten the shadows. I have Nikons and Sony's and it is accurate as to what would happen by default unless you preset the Sony to bias the exposure. Great location and great review and comparison on both lenses. But not sure what the value-added was on the hotel spooning scene. (?) What part did it play in the optics of these two great lenses?
so is the C100 the camera to have now in it's price range ? and do you have an opinion on the ML RAW for the 5D mark lll ? is it safe and without problems, and is the image quality at another level ? I am also curious why they can sell a 70/400 for so much less then the new Canon 200/400 f4, is it really that much more money to make a lens if it's an f4 lens ?
The D600 sensor should be the very same of the Sony A99 and the quality about on par with the D800. I think this is a good choice for the resolution is almost exactly the same of the Sony, around 24Mpx while D800 has 36Mpx, so it would have created a noticeable difference at 100% magnification, unless they resampled the images... thus voiding much of the affordability of the test :)
I actually saw you guys filming (1:51 to 2:44 timestamp) at Lake Louise while I was up there for vacation a few days ago, but I felt it would be weird to ask for a photo and chat when I don't religiously watch their videos and honestly forgot your RUclips channel name and Chris' name :x
I'm not sure what your experience is, but my impression has always been that wildlife in North America is far less evasive as animals in most parts of Europe. Staying in your car - at least over here in Europe - is almost a guarantee that you'll get much closer to the animal that you want to shoot. Sometimes this actually works so well that you have to back up again. Otherwise you can't frame the animal with your telephoto lens.
I think Canon just put out a 200-400 but maybe that's much higher and out of range vs these two because I think it's around 10 grand. Would be nice to have an updated 100-400 that's for sure.
What gimball head is that? I am looking for a gimball head for my Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS with 2x teleconverter and a Canon 7d, would the Jobu Jr 3 be a good choice? I think the Wimberley is too expensive and too heavy.
thx for the video. there aren't very many video about the sony a99 and thats what i have. sad to hear its still a runner up in some cases. Please try include the a99 if possible in more of your videos. great job
The A99 is only a runner up with people who are biased in the first place. Every time a dedicated canikon shooter does a head to head with ANY gear other than canikon gear they declare the canikon stuff the best, even if it isn't. The A99 matches up extremely well with nikcanon cameras nearly double it's price so don't feel bad.
Hi - a question to you I`m using a Sony A77 today, with a16-80mm, and a Sony 70-300 G, for wild life. My problem is that only 4-5 out of 12 pictures (full burst) for the 70-300, is sharp. Particulary when shooting birds/animals when they move. (not using single point autofocus, and of course using stabilizer) Do you think the 70-400 will perform better, or much, when it comes to accuracy, (more sharp pictures on full burst), and sharper pictures, compared with the 70-300?
With higher pixel 24Mpix or 36Mpix on Nikon every lens will give more detail than Canon 18Mpix or 22Mpix. This 80-400mm is sharper than 70-200mm VR II + 2x but in terms of class and sharpness. It is still below 70-200mm at 70-200mm focal range. If Canon have 24 Mpix sensor, 100-400 will give similar detail >95% than 80-400mm, Besides that, 100-400mm made of magnesium alloy, not plastic, but not weather sealed although still fine shooting under the light rain.
WONERFUL, WONERFUL NICE SHOOTS.THE ONLY TIME I GOT INTO TAKEN PICTURES, IS MY GRAND CHILDREN. 2010 MARCH MY GRAND BABY LITTLE HELEN WAS BORN, & I WENT CRAZY TAKING PICTURES OF HER.

Canon 50mm F1.2. Had to shoot it wide open for exposure's sake.

This review is practical, complete and entertaining. Just perfect as always. Thanks Chris!
I have to disagree. In our testing the Sony and Nikkor were both substantially sharper, especially at 400mm wide open.
Jordan @ The Camera Store TV
Guys you need to review tamron 150-600mm lens and maybe caompare tamron vs sigma 150-600mm when sigma's lens is released.
Great review! As always. I'm already looking foreward to the next...
But what's up with the exposure and color differences? A fan of Steve Martin and John Candy, I see! Planes, Trains and Automobiles quote - very good!
Man! those are some keeper shots! great work.
@5:05, that's some... interesting bokeh, what lens was Jordan using on the C100?
Always great reviews with a good sense of humor - big props from germany! I have one question: Which audio equipment do you use for the videos? the quality is amazing!
Great job. I find it very useful in my consideration of the Nikon 80-400mm.

It'll be 1080P in a couple minutes. RUclips is still rendering.
Did you use a cable release or timer for your shots? Or were all hand-held?
WHAT THE FUCK AHAH! 4:37???

Thanks for looking at Sony's gear, not to many people put information out about them yet. Makes for buying new lenses difficult.
Ah, okay. Great video by the way, any chance you might compare the Canon 100-400 to the Nikon 80-400?
Sehr gutes und aufschlussreiches Video,Danke!
You guys definitely the most pro and entertaining..... thank you.

I live in Banff and heard of the permit but as a hobby photographer I have never been stopped .How do they tell if your a hobbyist or a pro.
Which lense do you need a permit for again?

NICE ! BUT WHAT ABOUT THE 2x TELECONVERTER IF USED WITH THAT LENS FOR SONY , IS IT FINE/OK TU USE THAT TOGETHER WITH 70-400mm ZOOM LENS
great review as always.....thanks
How do these lenses rate on APS-C cameras? Better since they are using more of the center, or somehow worse?
Nice shoots

I have a d7100, the lens is 80-400, is the quality good enough for clearly pictures/videos of my grandchildren's soccer matches??
I appreciate the quality of the vids
What is the name of the music theme used from 6:56-7:18?
you guys make me wanna move to canada!
Great review!
The place you live in is incredible! Lucky you.
Test the Tokina 80-400mm
It's the best lens I own!
No, I didn't...just wanted your opinion but I guess you already made it. thanks.
Beautiful place!
is the 80-400 worth getting? or just go for a prime instead ?
LMFAO dat bed scene. Canon will probably announce new 100-400mm IS before the end of the year.
Try to compare these lenses with mighty Bigma 50-500
Canon announced 200-400 1.4x two years ago, they just send it to shops these days...
New 100-400 is on it's way..
Hey where did i watch this dude?
Please review the Nikon 35mm 1.8 fx.
How does the Nikon AF-S 80-400 VR compare to the Nikon AF-S 200-500 VR?
With higher pixel 24Mpix or 36Mpix on Nikon every lens will give more detail than Canon 18Mpix or 22Mpix. This 80-400mm is sharper than 70-200mm VR II + 2x but in terms of class and sharpness. In the image quality part, you had the Nikon 80-400 as a 70mm
nice review,,,,,for both!!!!...
Try to make a camparison with the Sigma 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG APO OS HSM.
Could be pretty awesome.
Great review and I love the new Sony 70 - 400
What tripod do you use?
I love this lens! I only wish i could afford it someday :)
Good review. Funny guys. Use the 80-400 with D500. Works great. Bought the A600 for my with. Not going to purchase the 100-400 Sony for her. LOL
Keep up the humor in the vids! Love it!
Just watched the whole thing on my iPhone 5 - what % of your views are on mobile?
Can someone explain why you need a permit to shoot in Banff?
someone knows what Tripod and head combo is that AT 0:50
Gitzo 3541 with a Wimberly Gimbal Head.
Really useful video thanks
I'm not a native English speaker. I didn't quite understand what was said about the permit.
That scene came out of nowhere. Hahaha
WONERFUL, WONERFUL NICE SHOOTS.THE ONLY TIME I GOT INTO TAKEN PICTURES, IS MY GRAND CHILDREN. 2010 MARCH MY GRAND BABY LITTLE HELEN WAS BORN, & I WENT CRAZY TAKING PICTURES OF HER.
Hey guys, hope ur not badly flooded out. Keep safe. RichieK Ireland
Wouldn't the D800 and A99 be a better match?
Canon just announced the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x. I really don't think there will be a new 100-400 soon.
