Have you ever tried to have a staring contest with your friends but realized that you are only able to last a couple of seconds before your eyes feel burned and watered so much that you finally gave up?
So why is it so hard to go a long time without blinking and why do we even need to blink at all?
Blinking is something we have to do for two main reasons. The first reason is our eyes need to clear away dust particles that enter the eyes. If we kept our eyes open all the time then all sorts of things floating in the air could get into them and cause irritation.
The second reason we need to blink is to lubricate our eyeballs which prevents dry eyes and reduces the risk of problems with our tear film
Even though you probably don't notice it, the average person blinks approximately once every 10 seconds.
So how long can you hold your eyes open? Well the current world record holders are able to hold their eyes open for over an hour!
But what would really happen if you didn’t blink for 30 days? Well…Your eyes would dry out, because your tear film isn’t being replenished. This can lead to eye pain and blurry vision.You could also get an eye infection from all the debris that would get in them.
So good thing our bodies are trained to blink so our eyes can stay healthy!
