  • Ahoy! Let’s Think! Today we answer the question Why Do We Faint?!
Fainting, or passing out, is a temporary loss of consciousness that can affect anyone and happens when there is a sudden drop of blood flow to your brain. Other symptoms that you may experience after fainting include headaches, vision changes such as seeing stars, ringing ears, loss of muscle control and falling down if you fainted while standing up. Luckily, a fainting episode typically lasts for a few seconds or a few minutes and a person is usually fine and normal after they wake up.
Fainting doesn’t sound very fun so what exactly can cause it to happen? There’s a lot of things that can cause you to faint which include certain medications, dehydration, and even hyperventilating. Since fainting relates to blood flow, a sudden drop in blood pressure can also cause you to faint such as dehydration, skipping too many meals, a drop in sugar level and even standing up too quickly.
Most fainting episodes aren’t a cause for alarm and don’t typically indicate a serious health problem unless there’s further complications that can cause injury, experience multiple episodes, or have other symptoms than what was mentioned. If you see someone faint, it may be a good idea to make sure that the person is breathing, has clear airways and that their heart is beating. Similar to other health conditions, it's good to ask your doctor if you have any concerns.
So that answers the question, Why Do We Faint?. That took some thinking!
