Hey Ray, thank you for the feedback :) I am not sure I'd make a video on something too specific as it would only be useful to a handful of people - there are however some really great blog posts online that explain every single setting in extreme detail that you might find useful - and they also often give advice on the 'best' settings :)

Has DJI improved the bitrate on the Mavic Pro? I have a Phantom 4 that makes grass look like mush because of the low bitrate. Thanks!
+Sweence I never used the Phantom so you may have to check their specs. Grass looks totally fine on the Mavic is all I can say :)

Max speed is 40mph - if you go twice that, the Mavic will not be able to follow you

Don't think I can make an entire short film, but I'm certainly planning to include some drone shots into my next projects :)

What picture settings do you use, I've tried a few and not happy with them but your footage looks great.
+Cleancut Productions I actually use the default 4K video. But I colour correct in post as the image comes out (intentionally) flat by default :)

Yeah, it's not a cheap buy and we waited quite a while before we pulled the trigger. The Spark is a bit cheaper and there are a few other good alternatives :)

I flew a few times around Melbourne, but stuck to parks / beaches / open areas / rivers. I tried to fly early in the morning when there were few people out and avoid flying over roads or buildings. In the end you have to be smart, responsible and respectful and try to not create a hazard for others, especially flying over crowds of people is a big no-no since the risk of injury is high should anything go wrong with the drone. But other than, Australia seems fairly relaxed :)

Out of curiosity, have you played with the GoPro Karma? I'm debating buying a drone for my Antarctica trip, and the Karma and Mavic Pro are basically the shortlist. 4k is a requirement, and the small size of both is a strength as I am limited on luggage.
On paper, the advantage of the Mavic is superior software and obstacle avoidance, the advantage of the Karma being the removable gimbal, making the Karma a double duty tool for flight and handheld.
Of course this also depends on how my talks with the National Geographic photogs go. They might advise Antarctica in November has weather conditions poor for flying. As it is, average wind speed is 12 kph, so I'd probably do short and simple moves, just to keep the drone close in while it burns battery in that wind...
(hey, pretty much all the Antarctica stock footage I can find is off a boat deck or ground level. Some aerial footage could make some $$$)
Minor side note. I live fewer than five miles from an airport, so test and familiarization flying means I have to go away from home. A shame as I live at the edge of the largest bit of undeveloped land in my county, and it's all this lovely deserty land with sandstone cliffs and such.
Hitfilm University piece of advise don't buy Karma. It's certainly a bad Karma. Buy Mavic and you will have a good karma. I have tested and without a doubt no comparison, not even close. No collision avoidance is one good reason not to touch GoPro
Unfortunately I've never tried the GoPro Karma. Would love to see some drone footage of Antarctica. You do want to make sure to get a drone that will return home though if anything goes wrong with signal or battery - it'd be hard to get to your drone if it's hovering over a block of ice out in the Antarctic ocean. But there's so many options out there now, it'd be worth checking them all out (if you get a chance).
I hope to get my hands on a few other drones - e.g. DJI Spark - to give them a try and compare them to how the Mavic is doing. I have to be considerate around Melbourne where I fly, but Australian rules are fairly relaxed as long as you are mindful and don't endanger people - and are at least 5.5km from any airport. There's so many beautiful places I still want to go to fly though :)
Surfaced Studio you do realise that a lot of the shots around Melbourne in your video are in illegal fly zones? The CBD area and a few KM's around it is covered with helipads. Also your shots over the bay area near St Kilda and Brighton are listed as no fly zones. If you're not aware, get the app released by CASA called "Can I Fly There?" As a fellow drone pilot, I want to continue to be able to fly and not when people breaking rules make it hard for all of us :)
I appreciate the feedback :) As far as the CASA rules go and as far as I understand them, it's the aerodromes, not helipads that you need to stay 5km away from - assuming you don't get in the way of any helicopter paths and are not an idiot about where and how you fly. CASA have also after I released this video overhauled their entire site and changed a few things. Still, essential on their site has changed, in the end it's about not being a risk or hazard and respecting people's privacy. Where are St KIlda and Brighton listed as no-fly zones? If so that must be a recent change, there was nothing about that on the old site :) Also, the DJI Go App integrates data for no-fly zones and won't let you lift off in those as they are wanting to adhere to all the rules coming in
Surfaced Studio It's possible the DJI software doesn't have a complete map. A person on my street flys a Phantom 3. Only issue is, we're 2.5 miles from an airport, and, in the USA, that's a no-fly zone. He should be grounded here.
In general if one's local authority has a no-fly app I'd say using that (in the USA, we have an FAA app), along with the DJI app is smart. DJI has to compile global data (and different laws by country/region), a local authority only has to worry about its jurisdiction, so the local authority might have more accurate maps.
Obviously, Tobias, you're trying to comply with local law (since you discuss it), so this is just information and opinion. :-)
Good video but why the final music is so loud? It's ruins all the good.... Please fix it in the next videos!

not as long as the drone is under a certain weight and not for commercial purposes. There's a lot of rules / regulations / info on the CASA website: www.casa.gov.au/aircraft/landing-page/flying-drones-australia

There are some great drones out there. Do check out the Spark - it's still not cheap, but cheaper than the Mavic (but of course has other limitations compared to this one)

For the most, the Phantom doesn't come back to the origine take off when the batteries are empty, and the stabilization isn't as acurate. But I'm not an expert, I just had the oportunity to stand by a friend who used it ;-)

I really want this drone but its so expensive :( (and 27 minutes of flight time is a lot. My drone can only do 7 minutes max. But yea its so much cheaper)
It is certainly not a cheap drone. There are a few cheaper alternatives (not only from DJI), but drones are unfortunately not really on the budget side of gear
I want a more critical review.
I for one hate that you have to use your own phone for a video screen, and that extra batteries cost a whopping $89 a piece.
Also, why wasn't the DJI Digital goggles and system bundled with this?
Also, I'd want to know if this was geofenced out of certain airspace.
Is it going to float, with some safety styrofoam inside? You need to hit those tough questions, not just wax glowingly.
I do not make ranty videos about 'whopping' prices, feeling offended at DJI product policies or being upset that my drone doesn't float when I dump it in the water. I cover the specs, how I use it and what i like and don't like about it. For everything else there's the rest of the internet ;)
Though I like the mavic for transportation I think the Phantom Pro is better
I've never flown the Phantom so I can't make a comparison, but I heard it's pretty great too!

I would not say $500 (dji spark) is a fun size price. One crash and that's a quick $500 down the drain. and only 1080p crash footage at that. On a side topic, I'm waiting for news stories to pop up for people having heart attacks when the Maverick pro disconnects from the controller. Then there will be laws put in place requiring warning labels to be put on drone for such things. What a world we live in.
The trick with these drones is not to crash them ;) They are pretty robust and will likely survive being flown into a tree (though I wouldn't want to try), but you'd want to be careful when flying them. Took me a while to get over my nerves flying the Mavic as it's certainly not a cheap drone

Did you have to reach out to dji for a free maverick to review or did they contact you first since you have a good size subscribers base? I'd like to start up my own Tech Channel but I only have my own personal Tech items I can review.

I'd certainly would love for DJI to support me with their awesome gear - I love their stuff and would be excited to go to the conferences and review more of their stuff.
